BAT SIGNAL UP ... 4/22/19 (Nicolas Dawkins)

More than half of our current class. And all 4 of our current OL recruits.

Okay, I went back and checked CJF's last few classes. Here were the number of verbals (with star ranking breakdowns) by the end of April:

2020 - 9 verbals (4-4*, 5-3*)
2019 - 3 verbals (3-4*)
2018 - 10 verbals (1-5*, 7-4*, 2-3*)
2017 - 7 verbals (3-4*, 4-3*)

So, in the last four cycles, this year has been the most 3* verbals this early in the cycle.

That's this year, right? How does that (star rating) compare to previous classes in the same time frame (verbals by/in April)?

Well, 10 of 23 recruits last year were 3 or less stars. By April we had 3 recruits, one of which was 3 stars (Ellis). Ellis earned a 4th star late in the cycle. Two of the next 3 commits in May of last year were also 3 stars. So I don’t know, he is a lower rated 3 star than many of the others we have gotten, but a good chunk of our guys eventually get rated up. I would say the staff does a very good job of identifying talent early in the process. Our critics would say the bumps are simply a matter of where they commit.

My friend lived next door to him in Allentown. Was a super nice guy. Always outside talking to people and posing for pictures. Lived a quiet life and loved to remember the old days.
Yep. Lived down the street from me. Still have a photo of him posing with my son-in-law. Always waving if you drove by while he was walking his dog or with his daughter.

This is a perfect example of how the transfer portal is affecting recruiting based on the attrition of existing players. Franklin is going to fill this class to 25 or more ( I know I know ) as quickly as he can. In the previous two years Dawkins would have been held at arms length until later in the cycle. That said I wish him great success in blue and white.

We need some bodies on the OL. Small group on the roster now

Accredit this to the change in the landscape and the portal. Classes of 25 will be a regular item and the kids you are seeing commit right now are the ones that normally would have been told to hold off until later.

We definitely wanted a big OL class, so I'm hesitant to say this kid wouldn't have a commit-able offer if it wasn't for the transfer portal. He has a moderate offer list but I think Franklin & staff see this kid as a high upside prospect. He won't contribute until his 4th/5th years in the program. His genes point towards a solid athletic trajectory. Worth the 'ship IMO.

Give me Parks and Harrison on top of what we already have on the OL in this class and I would call the position group a home run this cycle.

Put him next to Darkwa and every opposing QB will succumb to the Double Ds.

She seems nice.

If all schools follow that logic, then most schools will have packed rosters and their won't be anywhere for the players to transfer.

Will be interesting to follow his progress this year. Seems like he really came on quickly last year and MAY be a late bloomer.... See if his offer list grows this year during the year.

A Florida judge on Tuesday temporarily sealed videos allegedly showing New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft receiving sexual services for pay at a massage parlor.

Judge Leonard Hanser of Palm Beach County court said in a ruling that Kraft’s “right to a fair trial” on charges of soliciting prostitution “requires the disputed videotape to be withheld” — for a limited period of time — from media organizations that have sought the videos’ release.

In his written order, which came in response to a request by Kraft’s criminal defense team to keep the videos from the public, Hanser wrote, “A seventy-eight year old man walks into a day spa and, in addition to receiving conventional spa services, he allegedly engages in illegal sexual activity.”

“That seems like a rather tawdry but fairly unremarkable event,” Hanser wrote. “But if that man is the owner of the most successful franchise in, arguably, the most popular professional sport in the United States, an entirely different dynamic arises, especially if the encounter is captured on videotape, and the incident is the focus of much media attention and pre-trial publicity.”

Hanser ordered that the videos not be released until either a jury is sworn in for any trial for Kraft, the case against him is resolved by a plea deal, prosecutors drop charges against him, or “at any other time at which the Court finds that the fair trial rights of the Defendant are not at risk.”

The judge wrote that he is “seriously concerned about allowing the media to disclose to the public a piece of evidence that would be (or could be) central to the case against” Kraft.

But he rejected arguments by Kraft’s criminal defense team that the videos should remain sealed because of either his right to privacy, or because they are exempt from disclosure under Florida law.

Prosecutors claim in their case that Kraft visited the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Florida, on two consecutive days in January, and that he received sexual services in exchange for money on both occasions. Cameras hidden by police armed with a so-called “sneak and peek” warrant captured the encounters, according to court documents.

The second visit occurred hours before Kraft watched the Patriots defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game in Kansas City.

Kraft, whose team won the Super Bowl in February, has pleaded not guilty in the case.

WRONG. THREAD.

I would rather have Park & Carmody to close out the OL class. Harrison i believe wasnt getting the best of reviews from Sean (247). Apparently he had a lot of bad weight and was using this bad weight to overpower smaller defenders at the H.S level, rather than use proper technique.

I have a good story about his dad...I had posted it here when his dad passed away, but will see if I can recreate it....hope to get the highlights

When Daryl Dawkins was drafted out of high school in 1975, he lived in an apartment in Voorhees, NJ. I was 10 years old and lived with my family across the parking lot. Daryl drove this really jazzed up 1975 Ford Thunderbird - had all this writing on it like "Big D", "Daryl's car"....all with the same stick on that people used for pinstriping.

Anyway, there was a mall near the house. The mall had an arcade, which young people won't know much about, but it was a place where pinball machines, video games, etc. were found. You put in a quarter, and got to play the game until it defeated you. My game was pinball.

When we needed money, we would wash Daryl's car. He was a really nice guy - he would let us wash his car even if it did not need it He knew we just wanted money for the arcade.

Anyway, one day my friends and I decided we needed money to go to the arcade - so it was me, Andrew and Joe. We get our stuff together, I grab my mom's little red bucket and sponges and trudge over to Daryll's house - we knew he was home because the car was in the parking lot, and he never went anywhere without it.

Understand, Daryl was 6'11". We were....about 4'10" tall. He was eight or nine years older than us, but he was like a God to us. Daryl also was the one guy in his family that was going to make it, and he would have family visiting and staying with him - he was a kind hearted guy and always took them in. So, it was not uncommon to see him with someone in his family. And his entire family was tall. I mean....really tall. And this is not just from the perspective of someone who was 4'10" at the time.

So, we knock on his door, and we hear all this laughter - two guys laughing and roughhousing. We knock again, and this time, we hear two sets of very loud footsteps coming to the door. The door opens and it's Daryl and another guy, a cousin, a brother, someone....and they are both holding plastic swords in their hands, and they are laughing maniacally. The cousin, or brother is about 6'6" and looks like Daryl.

WE. FREAK.

I drop the red bucket and sponges, Andrew drops the car wash soap, Joe drops the towels and we ran as fast as we possibly could back to our houses. We were absolutely besodden - we heard Daryl's voice bellowing "come back, come back here"....but we didn't. We just ran as fast as we could.

Did I mention we were freaked?

I run into the house, close and lock the door. I run past my mother, who is of course, wondering where her red bucket is. I ran into the bedroom and hide under the covers, because I am sure this huge behemoth wants to cut off my head with his sword.

A couple of minutes later, there is a knock on the door. My mother is cooking, and asks me to answer the door - of course, I don't want to, as....I AM FREAKED.

Someone knocks on the door again, and this time my mother threatens bodily harm if I don't answer the door - because she is too busy. I timidly open the door - I have to open it because I am not quite tall enough for the peephole....and there is no one there.

I look down, and there I see it.

My mother's red bucket with the sponges. And inside the red bucket - $5 worth of quarters.

If Nick Dawkins ends up being half the man his father was, then he will have done alright.

RIP Chocolate Thunder. Your son is in good hands.

Great story! Would be awesome if you could tell his son the story some day

That really is an awesome story.

Yes, it would. I would love to let him know how kind hearted his father was - even when he was just 18 years old.
My assessment is that he never changed. I mentioned above that in his later years, he used to shop at the Wegman's near my workplace. I would go there for lunch maybe 2-3 times a week. He was there, maybe 1 of those times each week. Everybody that passed him would say hello and want to talk. He always replied kindly. I often thought about how exhausting that would be, because you know he gets that every time he leaves the house. Still, he always had a smile on his face and said hello, even posed for photos with people.
