Has there been any news lately regarding the tentative proposals to upgrade the stadium?

There hasn't been any news regarding elements in Phase 1 of the Plan, which I believe is to get underway in 2018, let alone Beaver Stadium which is supposed to be dealt with at the far end.

Obviously sandy is taking time evaluating and reevaluating all costs and needs, prioritizing and optimizing. Due diligence and all.

Have you looked at the Lax field by the stadium? The sides are all dug up and they are putting bleachers in there.

Right now, I'd just me happy if they put a mega-sized cell antenna on top of the press box. The cell reception is so bad it's almost comical. Getting 100,000 people into a very small area 7-times per year is not a new phenomenon at Penn State. It's been going on now since the invention of cell phones and then smart phones. It's mind boggling that they do not have the spike on cell / data usage addressed. All they need is for a couple of strategically placed antennas to be mounted on top of the press box. This is something Penn State does not even have to pay for. I'm sure Verizon, AT&T, Sprint... would all share costs in a co-locate antenna.

I have not followed this very closely at all, but spending 500 mil (do I have that right?) to make your stadium smaller is not one of the more appealling business ideas i have ever heard.

This becomes even more difficult to understand when you think about 2 factors: 1) the fan base seems to be rapidly aging for football in general, and PSU in particular; and 2) CTE looms over the entire sport. This summer's findings about 111 brains have every parent of a son thinking "99% chance," and that will slow down the yearly regeneration of CFB since WWII.

I get that the study says no such thing. But I am not betting 500 million on parents to critically analyze the findings.

PA in particular is a tough case, because the resident population is aging as young people leave for more opportunity. These same issues don't affect U of Texas or South Carolina the same way.

I would imagine they are involved in the "silent solicitation" of big donors attempting to raise the foundation (maybe $100 million or so) for the future general solicitation to raise the rest of the money.

All of which could be reasons why they put anything definitive re the stadium years away. But if future revenue streams from football are in question how are the dozens of other sports, on which they plan to spend well into nine-figures on construction, going to be funded?

They can't share an antenna. They would all need to be built out independently. it would not be a cheap investment for seven Saturdays a year. They simply are not going to do that. What they do is they bring in cells on wheels which are temporary cell sites. It not perfect but none of them are going to outlay the capital for permanent solutions.

And simultaneously raise ticket and parking prices next year. (And every year there after )

Fair explanation. For the quality of the connectivity and reception, however, they might as well bring in "Meals on Wheels."

Per Sandy, you ask too many questions.

;)

IMO, the BEST improvement they could make to the Beav, if managed correctly, would immediately bring more revenue. BETTER FOOD. Sheesh, that slop they serve is awful.

People in the stadium want that in-dirty-underwear-complaining-on-McAndrew-from-the-basement experience.

At least they serve Creamery ice cream now. Amazing they didn't do that years ago.

BRING. BACK. CHICKEN. COSMOS.

And that delay in renovating the Beav is a prime example of the "spoonful of sense in a trainload of madness" which passes for governance at PSU.

BOOM- nailed it

when actual fans die off, it's going to be all over anyway, so why spend the money for what is sure to become a white elephant before the bonds are paid off?

So if you like to check scores of other games, look up stats, watch a highlight or post things to social media you are not an actual fan? Just because the way they enjoy the game is different from yours doesn't mean they aren't actual fans.

It also time to can the volunteer staffing of concession stands. This season they have been short staffed at almost every game and have not had every line open in the north upper deck.

Honestly, Beaver Stadium is so packed it basically sucks to sit there smashed up against so many people that you have 0 room to move. At halftime if you move out of your seat to go to the bathroom or get food it takes the entire time, and half of the next quarter to get back to your seats. You can barely move past anyone on the concourses..the bathroom lines and the concession lines are beyond insane, and they are raising prices for that?

Yea. I'm 52 and I've been going to games at Beaver Stadium since 1972. But I guess I do not qualify as an "old timer".

BTW. I also remember watching TV without a remote control and having to get up to change the channels.... I definitely enjoy TV much more with my remote in hand.

So I've been attending games at Beaver Stadium since 1972. But now I have 2 teenaged daughters who like to attend games with me. I like to sit and watch the games without looking at my phone too much. But my teenage daughters like to watch the games while facebooking, snap-chatting, texting, taking video clips.....

Tell me old wise one.... when I "die off" and my daughters inherit my season tickets what happens?????

For some reason, I don't think that is the case. We might get a better sense when something definitive re Phase I construction plans is announced.

The very first VCR I had came with a remote control, with a 20' cord that plugged into the front of the VCR. It was convenient, but you had to watch you didn't trip over it when walking across the living room.

It could be. Perhaps there is nothing more to it than waving the flag of future renovations in order to somehow justify planned ticket price increases in the interim, and everybody on the inside knows the renovations as discussed will likely not occur.

They do seem to be taking some gambles. Hope they’re right. Don’t think it’s likely, but hope so...
