If we win out we are 11-1 and likely ranked third and if Ohio state and Oregon win out they are likely in the BIG championship game. With our high ranking we likely get a home playoff game along with the loser of the Ohio State Oregon game. The advantage to us in this scenario is we get two weeks off and can use that time to rest up and heal. If we are in the championship game and lose we get one week off and one extra very tough opponent. The conference champion would still get two weeks off but with playing a tough opponent to get the extra week off.
I think I would rather be in our position with an extra week off and not have to play in the conference championship. With the 12 team format, winning the conference championship could be meaningless unless you are a team outside looking in and have to win the conference championship to get into the playoffs.
The disadvantage to us in this scenario is we get two weeks off and can use that time to lose focus and slack off.
Has a bye week, or even post season practice bowl game prep, ever really helped during the last 10 years? Maybe I see things through the bias of watching a young JVP make the good of practice time. Opponents expected to be playing a disciplined, well-prepared Penn State team.
Back then we knew we had a chance in bowl games as an underdog. In one very prominent case we beat a team as extreme underdogs. Now we expect to lose those games. A win would come as a surprise.
