I'm not one for hyperbole, but as I was walking my dog tonight, it struck me that PSU is literally 1 win away from playing for all the marbles.

All the nonsense with 1994, the corrupt games throughout the 90s and 00s. The near misses. All the rankings and politics, worrying about top 4.

All the big games Franklin has choked away in regular seasons to you know who. The Iowa fiascos. Minnesota and the BS pick play call. The Fields decommit. The untimely injuries. Etc.

Nothing has held the import of next Thursday. Some how, some way, Franklin needs to only win 4 quarters to get to the final boss. The entire narrative gets wiped away with a win. This is the closest you can get to the prize.

Next Thursday really is the biggest game in this program's last 40 years. It is a defining game that can change the trajectory of the entire program.

Agree?

This is about the fifth time this season psu has played the biggest game in 40 years.

Agreed. But 30 years, not 40 years.

Other games were big to get us to something bigger…but as long as a national title is the big prize, this is literally our biggest since 1994’s Oregon game.

Thank goodness for the 12-team playoff because we probably would have been left out in a 4-team field (11-1 Notre Dame over 2-loss conference championship game loser PSU).

That year was squirrelly as we all know because we did not control our destiny like we do this year. We had to hope Miami would beat Nebraska.

First time we have been in full control of our own destiny to win a natty since 1986. We saw in 1994 that being ranked #1 during the season doesn’t mean you end up there even if you win every game in your schedule.

So yeah - biggest game since 1987 Fiesta Bowl.

This program has won 34 games in the last three seasons, which has to be in the top 5 or 6 of all schools during that period if not better; the trajectory of this program already has been changed.

I don't know how it's not the biggest game since 86....we've won 2 playoff games against teams we were expected to dominate and now we're underdogs against a team we've been ranked higher than all year with a chance to make the first true championship game in college football history. This isn't diminishing the past. It's just accepting the importance of this game. It truly could be program changing.

I agree it's a huge game.

However, the outcome will not be the sole measure of what has been a great season.

We've won 13 games. We're one of four teams still playing. As Delco said, it's house money the rest of the way.

With that in mind, I think the team will be loose next week and focused. We're going to beat Notre Dame and play Ohio State for all the marbles.

We reached the semis and have an opportunity against a lower seed but it's just all bonus now?
Come on--the objective is to win titles--this may be our best chance moving forward--you never know
Beating ND is an absolute must for Franklin's reputation and the program. Losing still means we had a successful season but with a very disappointing end
We make the final and play Ohio State--then you can claim House Money but absolutely not against ND

Out of curiosity, what was a bigger game than next Thursday? Michigan in 1994? OSU in 2005?

2016 OSU/Wisky?
I'd say that this is the biggest game since the 1987 Fiesta Bowl because this game is one step from the National Championship game, in which we actually would have a chance to win a championship on the field for the first time.

It's only an "absolute must" in your head, Lando.

For me, it's a reasonable expectation...and I think we'll meet it...but if not, it still will have been a great year.

For those who hate Franklin, however, it will of course be just the latest excuse to dump on him...and the program.

Regardless of what happens, I won't be joining them.

No...its a must in the minds of the experts. Never said for me.
Great years can still be disappointing. Our path to a title game is SMU, Boise State and ND. We'll never have that level of a path again. If we lose to Ohio State that's 100% fine...losing to Texas or ND doesn't make it a bad season. Just a failed opportunity and a disappointment
And the media doesn't hate Franklin. Results are results and against top teams his record is what it is. This would be a huge step in changing that. 2 more wins and no one should say a word for 5 years.

Based on the way the season has played out there is no doubt in my mind that if Penn State comes ready to play, plays error free and plays to their potential, they can win these two remaining games. Of course the other team(s) will have something to say about that. And the coaching staff needs to stay out of their way. Then we can hand out the biggest, best, favorite awards.

Absolutely yes I agree vs ND. OSU on the other hand is a brutally difficult game. Just compare their performance to Texas, ND, Georgia and us in the quarters. They are on another level. Can we beat them? Yes, but we need our A game and they can't have their A game like they have had in these playoffs.

There were more imo games immediately post sanctions. The program could have completely imploded.

This is more an indication of bring really back. And well I thought the new changes with the portal in the NIL thing would hurt teams like Penn State, I didn't realize it will equalize the playing field. Even Dan Patrick was joking about as were others that, well, everything that the south was accused of doing is legal now. For everyone else.

That’s a really good point. I concede.
Watched the games since the mid seventies and I never could grasp how the game would change and how would Joe leave. The fact that we're here right now but amazes me and makes me grateful.

I thought it was all over. I think too many people don't grasp how far we've come including journalist who I kind of think or, well, stupid people. Think of the guy you knew and whatever major and journalist weren't necessarily the brightest crowd.

One of the things that will aggravate me is there is no sense of history and flow and the changes coming about. I mentioned somewhere else on this forum or maybe it was a different forum how bad manner basically legal for everyone.

I thought that this would hurt Penn State in program such as us but I think it's gonna be a great Boone. Pat McAfee was mentioning this on ESPN segment and he said that PSU has the most CEOs out there and these guys are ready to pump money into the program.

I think we're going to do just fine going forward.

O'Brien seems like an a## but you have to give him a lot of credit for holding the program together. With that said, he benefitted from Joe's players to a good degree and had Mauti and McMoxie. James Franklin also deserves a lot of credit for what he did to navigate us through. Now look at us. I want us to win it all simply so we stick it to that horse's rear end, doofus Mark Emmert. Total sanctimonious prick and raging fraud.

Back in the day some middle of the road programs like Illinois & Purdue would put together a competitive team and PSU would finish 8-4 or 9-3. Those days seem to be gone as the top teams have separated themselves. Can you imagine facing the likes of Drew Brees and Simeon Rice at those schools again?
