Bo Bassett decommits from Iowa

Have not listened yet to the podcasts, but my question is, did dad have his head in the sand on The Iowa Way?

Was there complete buy in 4 months ago but not now?

I have the same question because if you've been paying even moderate attention, you know who Tom and Terry are. If you're suddenly surprised, that's on you for not doing your homework. Add to this Bo's very public selection process, giving the appearance of careful deliberation, and it just seems next-level embarrassing for everyone involved.

So what was the draw to secure his commitment to Iowa in the first place then? Is this confirming it was all about securing the bag from Bob?

The biggest issue was Bo not being able to come in and train at the RTC. Iowa compliance said absolutely no. Hard no on extended stays and hard no on paying for the travel.

Meanwhile, Jax is at Okiest pretty much whenever and for however long they want. Bo didn't make the U20 team, while Jax made Final X. That burned Bill up.

Bo wanted to wrestle for Iowa. Sold on the draw, the presence, loved the program, loved Spencer Lee, wanted to bring the program back, beat Penn St, etc, etc. And yeah. Got a bag.

Go figure, Iowa's side of the story want to paint the picture that the they follow the rules to the T. Penn State and Ok State are cheating.

I have a hard time picturing a compliance department that clearly approved on their booster calling wrestlers on other teams and not in the portal, having them say "they showed up on campus without telling us and we recruited them then" wouldn't find some way to work out Melvin and Bo.

What is the compliance issue? It's not like high schoolers aren't allowed to train at RTCs.

Is it because they aren't Iowa City-area residents?

Bob's comments had nothing to do with Bo decommitting. That's nonsense.

But, like I said the entire reason Bo wouldn't commit in the first place - Daddy Bassett was consistently saying, to those that no him, he didn't trust Iowa to make Bo better at wrestling. There's a middle here, and i don't know where that is but both Tom and Dad Bassett are just not a good mix.
TnT would have certainly helped Bo develop his hand fighting and push, push, push for a stall technique.

The more that I think about it, the more I love this narrative and spin job

Let Iowa's admin/compliance think Tom Brands is a man of honor and lost a kid because he refuses to ever cross into the grey while broadcasting that Penn State and Ok State have a better RTC model

supposed to live within 250 mile radius
Here are RTC eligibility requirements:

Wrestlers can train only at RTCs within a 250-mi radiua of their home, unless (like Mocco) none exist within that radius.

Schools within that radius are not required to allow athletes to train there. It's not uncommon for schools to close the door once an athlete commits elsewhere.

The 250-mi rule no longer applies once an athlete signs his NLI, which neither Bassett nor Miller can do yet.

OKST can skirt this legally by having Jax train (officially anyway) at Coleman Scott's club in Stilly. PSU can do the same with M2. If Iowa hasn't figured this out yet, that's on them.

Kids don't decommit without knowing were they're going, especially when big NIL money is on the table.
Bassett likely left NIL money on the table by decommitting.

As I understand it, NIL deals now must be approved by the schools' collectives for legal compliance purposes. The grandfathering deadline was about 2-3 weeks ago.

His new deal will need to pass scrutiny that was previously beneath Slumlord Bob.

The problem with this is that Sebolt is even more of a trainwreck than Iowa or the RTC.

Well to stay with Tom Brands is a tough pill to swallow. Kids in high school do not have confidence with him being their head coach. the narrative is already written in a big part to social media. Whether that is right or wrong, I will not touch that. Once you lose the confidence of recruits and the wrestling community....things get real hard to be successful. The program will suffer until it changes.

It will just bring back the Bagman
Football recruits are already being told don’t bring up the deals

LOL

Jax has been training in Stilly since AT LEAST his sophomore year. When he traveled to the RTC during the school year.

This all goes back to something I said during the recruiting process (when I erroneously thought Cael would get Bo). For Bo, because of his social media brand, the amount of money in the bag isn't the most "valuable" NIL package. What's going to matter for him is how much he can improve his own brand, and clearly, he thinks Iowa is not where he is going to maximize his own value (i.e. by doing things like making the world team or at least the Final X). Because of the new NIL rules, he's losing money now by giving Slumlord Millionaire his bag back and leaving, but he clearly thinks it's going to be worth more later to get to a better place for his training.
