Bo won the Hodge

He and Jason were the class of season. Bo really set himself apart this season. Exciting to think he's going to continue wrestling internationally.

Either one or a tie would have been well deserved.

One personal theory: I believe that Nickal finished one pin behind Nolf. I suspect that was the reason Bo just held on to the cradle at the end of the match with Moore rather than actually trying to pin him. Don't know if Bo would admit it in public, but I think he made a decision not to try and tie Jason for the career pin record.

Win Magazine article:

Of the 51 total ballots, Nickal finished with 37 first-place votes from the Hodge Trophy Voting Committee. Nolf was second in Hodge voting with 10 votes from the committee made up of each past Hodge winner, national media, retired college coaches from each region and a representative of each national wrestling organization. Four voters cast ballots for a Hodge Trophy to be awarded to both Nickal and Nolf this year.

Huh? Ashnault was second in fan voting?

Two of Nickal’s 37 first-place ballots came from the on-line fan vote on WIN Magazine’s website. Of the nearly 28,000 unique votes cast over a four-day period during the week following the NCAAs, Nickal had 13,892, Ashnault was second with 7,828, Nolf had 5,251 and Diakomihalis ended with 933.

The controversial win over Hidlay destroyed any chance of Nolf winning it.

Funny you say that because that’s the first thing I thought when he appeared to have the cradle locked up on Moore and just kind of stopped. Just seemed very odd.

I was thinking the same thing! At first I thought it was a courtesy to Moore but then I learned that one more pin would have tied him with Nolf!

Bo stopped the cradle for Jason = Bo stopped the cradle for Moore's feelz. Neither happened.

Moore had a shin whizzer -- watch his left leg starting at 0:23 left in the match (7:23 in the video; helps to have the video full screen). Bo had nowhere to go with the cradle.

The ref should've called a stalemate after the takedown (and he was 5+ sec late in giving Bo the T2).

I think Bo would have put himself at risk had he tried to work into a pinning position. I have no doubt that he would have loved ending his career with a pin in the championship match, and he and Nolf would have been thrilled to share the pin record. It just wasn't there.

If nothing else, Bo is known for taking risks and making adjustments on the fly. Yes, Moore had him in a stalemate situation, but normally I think Bo would have tried to move on to something else, not just sit on the status quo.

I don't disagree with this -- only the reason for him stopping.

Usually the simplest explanation is the right one -- in this case, Bo didn't want to risk losing a national title that he had in the bag. That seems very straight forward.

If he stopped the cradle for Jason, that means he wasn't focused on Moore. That makes for a nice story. Just not very likely.

Bo won this years Hodge in the finals last year. Nothing Jason or anyone else could have done. All Bo had to do was not lose......yet he still wrestled free.

I can’t believe it is over. What are we going to do now that Taylor a Ruth AND Bo and Jason have graduated?

And Zain :(

Semi-OT but timely:

So, does Noodle Arms go 92kg (202lbs) for US Open & WTT ?? And aim for J Cox ?

Or drop to 86kg (189lbs) and aim for his teammate ??

Congrats to Bo.
Really could have been a 4 timer.. However what made him great is probably why he lost that bout to Martin his freshman year.
He was a risk taker and wanted to hit a big move against anybody at anytime. One of the few matches he wrestled conservative was against Dean in the finals.
He was a pleasure to watch.

Congrats to Bo for winning the Hodge Trophy! Like many of you, I part of me was hoping to see co-Hodge Trophies go to him and Nolf, bu in the end I think the best man one. The saddest part of all is that he didn't wrestle for Iowa. :) I have no idea what his goals are going forward, but I sure would like to see him wrestling for Team USA. You just don't see guys with his skill set and funkiness come along every day. And like Nolf, he's all class! What incredible role models!

Super happy for Bo! I also think they should rename the award after Nolf.

Reviewing past winners, I was surprised to see how much PSU has dominated this award, especially over the past ~7 years. The domination is even more pronounced when you consider runners-up. PSU is the only school to win more than 3 and joins Iowa State (Cael) as the only other school to win 3 in a row.

It’s awesome that Cael the wrestler is ahead of all TEAMS other than PSU.

Agree completely. The circumstances -- a national championship being about 20 seconds away -- dictated Bo's actions. He is a risk taker and an enormously exciting and entertaining wrestler. He is not stupid.

And each of Zain the wrestler and David Taylor the wrestler (2 Hodges each) are behind only PSU (6) and Cael (3) and are tied with each of 3 entire teams (Iowa, Mizzou=Askren, and OK State) and are ahead of each of all other teams.

Just amazing.

Not stupid and not able. That move cannot be completed with the shin whizzer unless you want an equal chance to pin yourself. Moore had it stopped, Bo’s right leg isn’t coming free and it would have to be free to complete the move. Bo was not thinking about Jason, or anything else for that matter, except “he’s got my leg and I can’t circle left or lift”. Lol.

Longer time in the match and ref probably calls a stalemate.

And to think some gave up on him when he lost to Andy McCulley in his RS year ;)o_O:D
More than a few gave in to the thought that despite a 4 - 2 record against Myles, after the 2017 Big10s Myles had Bo's number under the brightest lights.
