Bo's Getting Better!!

That's really exciting.

Anyone care to take an educated guess to this question? If Bo moves up to 84 this year, the percentage chance of Hall not redshirting this year is ?

I would say Hall will wrestle if Bo moves up...I am hoping Bo stays at 174 this year....

Hall isn't wrestling, and if Bo goes up (he's trying to go up, trust me), then Cutch comes down. If he doesn't win the wrestle off, he comes back down.

If I could recommend it, this thread (started by Bo) in Twitter is short, but humorous. Nico jumps in with some funny stuff, and our own tikk gets involved, as well as Q and Mark Bader.

Oh...and for the record...I love my NEW self.

Not taking sides...just presenting a few paragraphs from the pennlive articles. They include Cael's comments at the time. We can debate whether anything has changed since then.

"Sanderson also offered information about team members who will not wrestle this season. First and foremost is Mark Hall. The six-time Minnesota state champ, Junior World Team member and the nation's No. 1-ranked recruit, is attending summer classes and will be enrolled in the fall as well, but he will redshirt and train for various world and national freestyle events, Sanderson said."

and

"This year's Penn State recruiting class stands at 11 but two – A.J. Nevills and Mason Manville – will enroll for the 2017-18 academic year. The majority – with the exception of 125-pound Nick Suriano – will redshirt."

Bo is definitely trying to go 184, there will be a wrestle off. Coaches want the loser of that back at 174, so Rasheed would have to fight for it.

Does that mean there will be a three way wrestle off for 84 , with Cutch, Rasheed, and Bo?

My understanding is that both Cutch and Bo have been handling Rasheed pretty comfortably, so his best opportunity would either be 174 or a ridiculous bump to 197

Guesses, in order of Dominance:
1. 174 Bo over 174 Rasheed
2. 184 Cutch over 184 Rasheed
3. 184 Bo over 184 Rasheed
4. 174 Bo over 174 Cutch (which I'm not sure we know has ever existed yet, at PSU)
5. 174 Cutch over 174 Rasheed
6. 184 Bo even with 184 Cutch

Obviously the coaches know what they're doing and that presumes they'll hold such a wrestle-off early enough in the preseason for cuts to be a). possible, b). Emmert-legal & c). healthy. Which also presumes it might not be long from now.

We've heard Bo proclaim his interest in 184. We'd guess that the only way the coaches would have Cutch cut to 174 is if Bo beats him out at 184 (they're not gonna force him down if he's beating Bo at 184). I don't think #4 above is a realistic competition, but I put it in to complete the scenario math. #5 is almost certainly mandated by Bo winning #6, which I would have terrible difficulty predicting, as we've heard that both have had their share of wins vs the other in the room. But who can tell what a 174 Cutch even looks, feels or acts like?

The whole thing is fascinating.

I think you are off with #6. Not ragging on MM, but no way.

Not sure what the rush is for Bo to jump to 184.

He can do that his junior & senior year.

PSU path for a team title - and Bo's path to an NCAA title - is much cleaner if he stays 174 this year.

Thanks, and yes I agree that this whole conversation is really fascinating.

Sounds like a healthy Cutch will be a handful at 84 this year. I'd also love to see Bo at 74, to see him capture the 74 title. I certainly get the Freestyle 86g goal. But yikes, the road to a title at 84 seems daunting, to put it mildly.

A healthy Cutch would have probably made the finals last year. A lot of people forget that. As far as I am concerned, health is the only question for him. If he is healthy, he will be on the podium, and likely very high on it.

I recall last year hearing a preseason rumor that Bo had lost a wrestle off to Brian Brill and thus began a brief time where it seemed up in the air that Bo was even going to start (at least on various message boards, so who knows how accurate all that was). Then Bo went out and proved to be a class by himself all year. It's tough to assess who's-beating-who-in-the-room rumors without context because some guys look better or worse in practice than in matches, some guys are treating practice differently, etc. I agree with the conventional wisdom that it's best for the team if he's at 174 but if he can't get there and 184 is the only option I can't see him losing the spot to Cutch, even if Cutch is healthy. Because if Bo can't make 174 that means he's much bigger than last year and can likely match the strength at 184, if not now then definitely by March.

Depends on the draw. He wasn't beating Dean either way, and never came close to beating Nate Brown. Good success against Dudley and a few others.

I personally don't listen to the room rumors...or even the stuff that gets reported from those that go and see things for themselves.

It's called practice, and the guys are working on their skills...trying new things and taking chances, working hard on improving. Not a good recipe for stating factually that "wrestler A is beating wrestler B". And for the guys that are really in touch with their improvement areas, they seek out a wrestler that will help them (such as seeking out Zain if you want to work on getting out from bottom ;)).

True "wrestle-offs", to determine a starter, are infrequent, and more serious. The difference is obvious.

My understanding is that Bo going up has nothing to do with inability to make 174

That's the point though, a HEALTHY MM. He has to be healthy.
