They'll have a nice lightweight lineup with Mueller, Courtney, Phillippi, Krivus ... and Jabari Moody in there somewhere.

Interesting... weren't the early rumors that he was a sure thing for Cornell?

Yeah, 6+ months ago I thought he was Cornell's to lose, and it would be Lehigh if not Cornell. Then again, Flo has Jason Nolf on video listing only Cornell during his JR year.

After he won states, started hearing he would open up his search. And recently heard he visited Nebraska -- which is about as opposite from Cornell as it gets (distance, relationships, academics, workout partners, east vs. midwest, Ivy vs. public, etc.).

Interesting that neither PSU nor Lehigh made his final 4 (UVa, Cornell, UNC, Nebraska).

BTW, his announcement video is pretty funny: http://www.flowrestling.org/article/46764-brian-courtney-commits-to-virginia

That was mentioned pretty often. With Yianni and Arujau coming in, maybe he didn't see a good opening there?
Conceivable -- Cornell has a looming lightweight backlog anyway:
125: Macri (2019), Baughman (2020)
133: Tucker (2019)
141: Koll (2019)
149: Galasso (2019)
157: Chavez (2019)

Yianni and Arujau would arrive for 2019 (assuming both take an Ivy shirt at FLWC). They both project in the 133-149 range, though I doubt either ever sees 133 for more than maybe 1 year (if that).

I think Courtney projects better at 133 than Tucker, who's very short. But what if Macri goes up by then? And then who are his workout partners for his last 3 years? And what if he outgrows 133?

Virginia appears to offer more stability with workout partners, plus less risk of losing a year of starting.

I think a lot of the "Courtney is a lock for Cornell" talk came as a result of 1) him being an Ivy league caliber student; and 2) the fact that he was known to make the trip frequently to Rochester to train with Yianni and a lot of the other guys at the G2 World Wrestling Academy.

Damnstadt (OH) also has done some workouts with G2 and/or Fingerlakes so there was a pattern emerging that the clubs were becoming natural feeders to the University.

Nice fit, imo...Virginia is a very good school academically.

Absolutely....I did not mean to suggest otherwise....Just meant that he had the grades to get into the school that many of his training partners were attending....So point #1 was supposed to connect to #2.

Nothing but respect for UVA...Around my sophomore year of college when my family was considering moving for a business opportunity, Virginia was on my short list of transfer options.

Had a chance to walk the campus years ago, as my youngest applied to Virginia. Not sure I've ever seen a more beautiful campus.

Got my Masters there - Cville is cool too. A buddy lived in a cottage as an MBA student on a bald overlooking Monticello. Stayed there for a long weekend in early 90s when UVA beat FSU on a Thursday night to end the Noles long ACC win streak. Woke up groggily the next morning to CVille and the surrounding valley shrouded in fog with us above it all. I don't know how with that view he concentrated on studying.

The Hoos call their campus the "Grounds" (insert eye roll)

It was the flowers (gardens) and the history of Virginia that appealed to me. Been many places and it would be tough to match imo.

Hope it's ok to mention flowers and gardens on a tough ol' wrestling forum :).

Courtney beat Jason Renteria in the finals to win Journeymen today.
