big news...potential All-American and high NFL draft prospect...maybe the best player coming into a year at that position since Kim Herring (who was one of my favorite PSU players ever)
Hope he gets rings like Kim....some day

Man that fills a huge hole we potentially had in the secondary next year - amazing news! If he keeps improving like he did throughout the season he could really move up the draft boards next year.

Like they said on the 247 podcast - if that play at the end of the IU game happened later in the year, Brisker probably meets him at the 1 yard line instead of the goal line.

This is looking like a healthy locker room after all. Nice to see these key players coming back. We could be in for a special season next year.

Between some of the players leaving the program, their respective replacements via the transfer portal, certain players coming back that have high end talent, coupled with a potentially elite Offensive Coordinator addition, you have to pay respects to Franklin. As disinterested at times as he appeared to be this year, he has pivoted on a dime and basically reworked a lot of elements of his coaching and player roster. You certainly could not suggest he is not working towards a goal and fully engaged in the process.

Franklin deserves a lot of credit for what he has been cobbling together since the season ended. He declined a bowl game and went to work.
...and the typically cited benefit of "extra practices" would not have been as valuable this season anyway due to the protocols and restrictions...

...and the offense (at that time) would have been practicing the previous coordinator's scheme as opposed to the new coordinator's scheme...

Great news! Him returning with Wade leaving is a major upgrade.

Nobody should be surprised by Franklin excelling during the off-season, off the field. It’s what he does best. We all know where the problem lies, hopefully after 7 years he’s taken some time to reflect on how he can improve that aspect.

Now with all these players returning, soon we have to have the threads fretting about how we’ll ever reach 85 scholarships once the COVID exemption expires.
B....itch & W...hine .....I....diots are way ahead of you. Franklin doing a good job, BUT...

Are we positive that Wade is leaving? I don’t think he has formally announced anything yet. We thought Brisker was leaving until he came out and said he was staying.

I would say there are posters on this board that would like to see Franklin fired and marched out of Lasch immediately. I would say it probably represents 2% of the board population. Another 60% of the board represents some nebulous middle ground with him. Things like clock management, an over-reliance of QB runs, a hubristic commitment to never putting a QB under center in a short yardage situation.....all balanced by an understanding that it's tough to be elite, that he is a good man and a solid coach, that we probably would not do much better on the open market for a new coach, that he aligns really well with the values of the program and the school. Your obtuse and constant defending of all things coaching has become so stale. This is a football message board. People are going to criticize coaching decisions at times. If they are reasonable(and the vast majority are) they will also give Franklin props when earned, and they do....as I have. He is paid handsomely to put a winning product on the field. Many on this board support his salary with their donations to the program(tickets, merchandising, donations). They have a right to speak there minds as do you, but why do you have to attack every point that is made critically about Franklin? Why not just go after the 2% that really hate him. Why wage war on the mostly civil/honest posters regarding Franklin? I understand you were a coach, so I guess maybe you are part of an insular community that can never accept criticism of other coaches?

You are correct that I once coached.....and spent a lifetime in athletics. Criticism is part of the landscape, and should only concern those "in the arena" if there is some basis in fact for said criticism. I would argue that the constant bitching and whining of some is " obtuse. "
If the 60%you reference have the right to speak their minds.....please explain why that privilege should be denied me.
I find this all very amusing and look forward to those who lead such distressed lives that failing to put a QB under center consumes them. Are you willing to bet if CJF failed to utilize the shotgun snap....the very same posters would not be crying out for that?
If you wish to defend BUT fans ......I loved JVP but.....Franklin is a great recruiter ....but , have at it. Your only mistake in characterizing me is that you may assume that I take this seriously. I laugh at most of it, just like we (my coaches and I) did when we were active.

I though he already announced he was entering the draft. What did I miss? Anyway, if we are getting the last half of the fake season Brisker back than I am really happy about it.

Yes, this has been discussed at great length. Franklin is a greater recruiter. In fact, most here would agree that he'd be a great recruiting coordinator.

Hopefully, he stays away from the play calling next fall...

I very specifically said you have the right to your points, the same as the rest of the board, I just asked why you think it is your hill to die on to defend all things coaches at all times. If you really synthesis all the commentary, as least related to Franklin, as "constant whining and bitching," why even read any post involving Franklin if you find it so offensive? Maybe exit the board entirely? I however do not characterize criticism of Franklin as whining and bitching, I think some of it is true, some false, but I learn from it, find it thought provoking often, at minimum, I find it entertaining. Apparently, you find it none of those things, which again is your right, but since defending the coaching while simultaneously patronizing the "non-coaches" on the board is clearly your only "value" to the board, can we just all agree that you are "that guy" and all of your posts will be about defending the coaches at all costs and condescending the board population on this topic and call it good? You were a football coach, I'd really like your perspectives on why Franklin's decisions, or offensive philosophy, or situational coaching comports with what you would do. I'd like to know some of the X's and O's and why decisions are made and how it is sound football acumen from a guy like you. Boy, what value that would provide to the board. Instead, the only thing you seem to post about is "the board proletariat is just a bunch of whiners and bitc*s, if only they knew what it was like to be Franklin in these situations." Enlighten us, honestly and sincerely, I want to know.

That's a nice compliment and I agree.

In the JoePa years freshmen rarely saw the field. But Herring played special teams and stood out in kick coverage, and those talents of game speed and tackling ability transferred right over to defense as he climbed the depth chart.

As many have recognized, Brisker improved as this season went along. If there had been Spring practice he may have developed more going into the season and hit the ground running, but that may have put him in an NFL draft projection that would have been harder to pass up. So as it is he will be a leader on defense in 2021, at a position that on paper does not seem to be that well stocked. I'm betting that the JC transfer J.Brown starts at Safety with Brisker, as he was about the only player off the bench at Safety that showed much in 2020. Would that be a first, two JC players starting at Safety for PSU?

Are we positive that Wade is leaving? I don’t think he has formally announced anything yet. We thought Brisker was leaving until he came out and said he was staying.

We?

No, you thought he was leaving. As for my part of "we", I was waiting for him to make a decision.

Same with Wade.

Each player has his own set of circumstances, which includes what went on within the end of season talks that CJF has individually with each player. Wade also has at least 1 child, which will factor into his decision, but who but him knows how that actually does factor in. Wade may even be contemplating the Portal to try his hand as a RB, his high school position, on another team to try and expand his NFL resume. Who knows......

But out of the two 2020 starting Safety's I see more upside with Brisker as far as contributing to a top PSU defense..........

Again, I don't find the inane criticism "offensive." I am amused. You characterize it as "entertaining" or thought provoking.
The game of football has changed so much since I coached that I would be challenged to scheme today's offenses and the defenses needed to match up.
What has not changed, is the skill of team building, leading, character education. James Franklin deserves an A in all the critical areas. As for putting the QB under center......it depends who has the chalk last. I'm old school and actually would love to see some power football.....but he won me over with Levis in short yardage....moving forward at the snap with full momentum hitting the line of scrimmage.... but that is criticized here as a QB run......not a wildcat?

You can't provide perspective when criticism is so ridiculous. Franklin interferes with the offense....that's why it fails? Our astute fans "know" this is happening? If so, what is the evidence that he isn't calling the plays that result in touchdowns?
Football is not nearly as much about X and O as it is about execution. That is perhaps the biggest misconception of a fan. Virtually every play is diagramed to score a touchdown. This doesn't happen because someone at the point of attack or blocking downfield, doesn't execute. There's an old saying in the football coaching profession....."it depends on who has the chalk last." Draw up a defense and a coach can scheme against it.....show me an offensive scheme and we can dial up a defense to stop it.....No one wins all the time.....its competitive. That's the beauty of coaching and playing the game. Only on a message board is the game bastardized.
Coaching IS about making decisions. In the heat of competition and with many circumstances running thru your mind that the second guesser will never be privy to. Only the decisions that "fail" will be the topic of bitching.....because there are hundreds that are made in the course of a contest that anyone who hasn't coached would ever notice.
Having been around high school sports for 48 years, I have a deep and abiding respect for the job James Franklin does. PSU is very, very lucky to have him. Some here could walk down the street and have hundreds of twenty dollar bills fall out of the sky.....and they would bitch as they are picking them up that they aren't hundred dollar bills.

sorry the post got upside down......hit the wrong button somewhere

Brisker returning IMO is just as impactful as Dotson returning. They both will be outstanding leaders for this team. I think Brisker is just scratching the surface of his talents. He really only started figuring that out with half of the shortened season left. I expect a big, big year for him that makes him a ton of money in the 2022 draft.
