I’m attending the Penn State basketball game Saturday. Penn State (and all the B1G schools, for that matter) seems to have a very vague policy regarding cameras.

Has anyone with a DSLR and removable lens had luck/no luck in bringing in a camera?

With the bag policy, you might want to leave your camera bag in your car. I've seen some people let inside with sizable camera bags, but I saw a guy turned back at the Wisky game because of his camera bag.

That seems like the smart play. Thanks for the tip.

Update: Everything worked out fine. I got through the gates with no problem at all. Later in the game, though, an usher approached me and told me I couldn't take pictures with my camera. I just sort of nodded and went about my business. Luckily, he wasn't manning my section.

Oh, and the game. It was great! And colorful! Thanks again you guys for the tips.

He shouldn't have been. Backpacks aren't allowed. Other bags are, but they will be searched. Here's the official policy (I think I might carry a copy of it in my bag from now on).

PSU Official Bag Policy.

Most Recent Changes:

  • September 22, 2015 - Changes were made in the POLICY section to better clarify details for clear plastic bags that are allowed to be brought into University facilities Where the venue holds more than 20,000 (such as Beaver Stadium). Additionally, restrictions were clarified in the section entitled When the venue holds more than 3,000 individuals and less than 20,000 individuals (such as the Bryce Jordan Center, Jeffrey Field, Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, Recreation Hall and Pegula Ice Arena) (Plastic bag reference removed, as all types of bags are allowed/searched when entering these facilities, with the exception of backpacks, which are still not permitted).

Cameras with detachable lenses aren’t allowed. But it’s the bjc and nobody really cares about anything there.

I've always wondered about that policy about camera with detachable lenses. I think the justification is that you might throw the lens (but stupid as you could just throw the whole cameras). And the no video policy. I get that--but it is totally unenforceable as every modern phone is a video camera. I used to be ok in taking my SLR into most venues without problems--excepting concerts. Now? it increasingly is being specifically taken away.

My guess is that it has something to do with the concert situation and it is just easier for the security staffs to ban all SLRs all the time rather than make a specific rule for a specific event--because the folks they hire are too dumb to figure out the difference in many cases or to be trained for different situations or venues. I once had a situation at Nationwide Arena where I was told I could keep taking pictures if I took the lens off. Not replace it--take it off.

Mind you I have no problem with limiting the length of the lens--Iowa did that and I still got a decent shot of the winning TD. But some of the non-SLR cameras they allow have fairly long built in lenses that are every bit as good as an SLR (we're talking 200 mm here)--and they are ok.

That would be my guess. Any intimate concert venue I've been to has a no-camera policy. But even then, an irresponsible person with a camera phone and flash is way more distracting than a responsible photographer with no flash. Eh, it's tough to find balance.

Also, about the detachable lens thing: maybe you could hide something illegal inside the camera itself if you detach the lens? Like pills or even booze. I'm not sure and not interested in finding out because that's how you'd do some damage to your camera, I'd imagine.

Lots of other places to hide stuff--frankly. Not that I'd do it now (snuck in a bottle or two when I was younger to games (not always successfully, but...).
