not a great day for the US team.

42 kg
Malik Heinselman lost 11-0 to Shahin Mukhtarov (AZE) in his opening match. Mukharov lost his subsequent match, so that was it for Malik.

50 kg
Gavin Teasdale won his opening match over Igor Nykyforuk (UKR), 14-3. He then lost a heartbreaker to Tumentosogt Bold (MGL) in the quarters, 4-3. (I think he was leading late in the match, only to let it slip away.) Bold lost his semi match, so Gavin's day is done.

58 kg
Yianni Diakomihalis is the bright spot for the US. He won his R32 match 10-0 over Maksat Talkambaev (KGZ). He won his R16 match by a pin over Fazil Hasanov (AZE) in 0:36 sec. He won his quarterfinal match by TF over Dmytro Mykhniuk (UKR), 10-0. He won his semifinal match over Soslan Guchakov (RUS), 10-5. He'll face Jintaro Motoyama (JPN) in the finals.

69 kg
Brady Berge won his R32 match over Dawid Piskorz (POL), 4-0. He lost his R16 match to Rathi Sachin (IND), 6-0. Sachin lost in the quartes, so Berge's day is done.

85 kg
Owen Webster won is R16 match over Yaraslau Slavikouski (BLR), 8-2. He lost his quarterfinal match to Khusanboy Rakhimov (UZB), 4-2. Rakhimov won his semifinal match, so Webster will have a bronze match against Rahid Hamidli (AZE) later today. (I believe Webster also defeated Shutaro Yamada (JPN) 9-0 in an early match, perhaps R32, but can't figure out the bracket.)

46 kg (Dylan D'emilio), 54 kg (Daton Fix), 63 kg (Jarod Verkleeren), 75 kg (Joe Grello), and 100 kg (Gable Steveson) will be contested tomorrow.

Updated results:

1. Yianni decisioned Jintaro Motoyama (JPN), 6-3, to win a gold medal at 58 kg

2. Owen Webster decisioned Rahid Hamidli (AZE), 1-1 on criteria, to win a bronze medal at 85 kg

Cornell will be getting a good one when Yianni enters college.

Saw Yianni win some great matches vs. Fix in the past. The kid is one tough wrestler. He will be a real force for Cornell.

Agree completely. He was on our radar several years ago...but committed pretty early to Cornell.

Day 2 -
Fix and D'Emilio wrestle for bronze
Verkleeren and Steveson wrestle for gold.
