Can you recall your greatest memory of event(s) at Rec Hall?

Kansas concert in 75' and Marquette basketball game the year following when Marquette won the National Championship.
Dear Knight57, I also attended the Kansas concert at Rec Hall. Do you happen to know the date of that concert? I've searched online concert archives but it's not on any of the lists I've seen.

That Indiana where we got jobbed by the refs. What a gut punch.

Playing sunday morning pickup hoops with fellow grad atudents and faculty from the Econ Dept circa 91-93. Good times. Sweated out a lot of beer from the sat nights before at zenos and the brewery.

We got robbed against Temple as well in 87!

Billy Joel, Edgar Winter, Loggins & Messina. Some good basketball games and gymnastics meets.

Played a lot of basketball and ran a lot of laps on the track. IIRC 8 laps = 1 mile. Also played racquetball and went bowling.

The big 2nd half comeback vs. Miami in the NIT when Miami had that gigantic center Constantine Popa who shot FTs one handed

It was the night of an ice storm. I remember being unable to hear anything after the concert, and exiting via the side doors out onto an icy landscape. It was surreal.

I remember Bama came to Rec Hall in a big basketball game the year we were to play Georgia in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship.

Bama basketball players during warm ups took off their sweat jackets and were wearing T Shirts that said something to the effect of “ “ Beat Georgia”..

Classic..

I was at that game too. I think we came back from 20. NIT. Was also at the Bartram/Lickliter game. But best memories were definitely running and racquetball. Recall when the BBall office was an entrance to the track. Saw Bruce walk out of there one time when I was jogging. Crazy. Hi coach. Hey, hi.

Funny thing I recall about that Miami/Popa game was after it was a foregone conclusion they got a dunk on us and the guy was swinging off the rim and thumping. Who cares dude, you blew a 20 point lead. Typical Canes.

ain't often right but I never been wrong
seldom turns out the way it does in the song.........

Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right

JGB played Rec in 78. That was a 5 hour show including the break

Dead played in 79 and 80. 79 was my first Dead show. I had never seen anything like drums/space at a concert before. Was third row, they did close to 25 songs and it was awesome. Was one of Brent Mydland’s first shows.

In 1966 Mike Reid walked onto the wrestling team. He immediately faced the #1 rated heavyweight -- a kid from Lehigh. Mike kicked his butt. The kid never had a chance. Reid had so much strength and power that his lack of wrestling experience meant nothing. A spectacular performance!

The same Mike Reid who became a Grammy winner!

Nice revival of a four year old thread!

The first event I remember was the men's volleyball national championships in 1982. PSU shocked USC in the semifinals (and IIRC, earlier that season became the first eastern team to beat a Cali team...one of the UCs, I think).

We then got swept by UCLA, which sucked, but what made it memorable was watching Karch Kiraly pounding balls during warmups. He was hitting so hard some balls ended up out in the hallway.....upstairs! Oh, and he did pretty well during the games, too.

I remember spending many of my childhood weekends at rev hall. Playing pick up games, wandering through the tunnels.

But the event I remember the most was the Indiana game that went to OT. I remember sweating my ass off. It was so humid it felt like it was raining in the gym.

That was Karch's senior season. I've heard stories about Kiraly also pounding them down at Cafe 210 after the match.

Martin Luther King, Jr. speech, with me directly in front of him in the 3rd row...don't know how my frat brothers got us that row...he was an amazing man, regardless of your party of choice...simply amazing!
Yes he was. Question for you. It was the day after LBJ’s inauguration but there is no record of MLK being in DC. But he was in SC. Why was he in SC and not Philly, HBG, or Pburgh? Never heard the story of why SC.

Rolling a monster doobie and settling in for the Dead. Got in for nothing since the people who worked the doors were the same people who worked hoops. Went over with a Frank Brickowski since he knew all the door guys well. Made better by the possibility that I might have peed next to @nittanyziggy.

If I had to guess, probably safety reasons. Not sure, but his staff probably thought SC would be alot safer than a larger city like Philly or even the Burgh.

Playing pickup basketball with Franco Harris during finals week in 1977 or 1978. He was in town to pick up his little brother, Giuseppe. Franco drove the lane just like he ran an off tackle play. He was a tough guard.

I also remember the 78 Marquette game where I if I remember correctly, Penn State was up by 3 at the half against the defending national champions. Penn State’s shooting guard, Jeff Miller, lit up the gym with 30 in the first half. Sadly, I think he only got 3 points in the second half and Penn State lost by about 10 or so.

The only thing I've ever witnessed in Rec Hall, was PSU Wrestling. The best match had to be the year after Gable retired from coaching, but couldn't stay away from the team, so he traveled to almost every match, and the one in Rec Hall that year, was no different! Iowa was ranked #2, we were ranked 4th or 5th, and it started out bad for Iowa, and just kept getting worse! It was glorious! One of the first matches was their stud, ranked #2 at his weight class, and our guy just made the top 15, I think he was 14th. To this day, I've never seen a guy get pinned like this, but our kid caught him, and stuck him, and Rec Hall went nuts! Till it was all said and done, Gable was pacing behind the bench, and pretty much coaching! The real HC, which I'm assuming was Brands, just sat there and let Gable make an ass out of himself! Glorious! Needless to say, Brownies, at the bottom of Seven Mountains was hopping after that match!

Almost.

PSU was up by one at the half, 34-33. Miller shot 9-12 in the first half, then Marquette threw a box and one on him and he went 4-8 in the second. Miller wound up with 28 for the game, so he had between 18-20 in first half and 8-10 in the second (can't tell from the story/box score when he made his two free throws). PSU lost 73-60.

1/78 upset of Oklahoma in wrestling with 167lb Ashley Swift vs the Sooners heavyweight as the last match.

That Outlaws show was great. Florida’s Guitar Army. Three guitarists either playing lead at same time or alternating leads, but just wailing away.
Rec Hall got some good shows back then. America, Marshall Tucker and Pure Prairie League all played there, in addition to the aforementioned bands.

My graduation ceremony in May 1988... Girl giving the salutatorian speech extolled how at Penn State you're not just a number - minutes later graduates were asked to go over to the annex and claim diplomas - you guessed it - based on the number issued by the college of business administration
Yes I graduated in Rec Hall in 1985.
I believe I was second in the mechanical engineering class.

Good old Pete Harris spent the night sleeping in our bathtub one time when Franco came up to shake him up a bit. Little Pete could party. We had no idea he was in there until the morning when we woke up and stirred around a bit.

R.E.M./10000 Manics and saterdays playing doubles with Salina Davidson,Z Ton and other girls on the team.I also would play with Goerge and another guy from Puerto Rico that were on the men's team.

The NCAA didn't start holding women's basketball championships until 1982 - and they were never been held at Rec Hall.

What you are thinking of was the 1976 AIAW national championships which were held at Rec Hall. There were 16 not 8 teams. Penn State lost to eventual national champion Delta State 88-46 in the opening round.
Do you remember the year of the Four Tops concert? '67 - '72 ??

I echo PSU vs Alabama game, Dec ‘82!

I’d add James Taylor concert in 85-86 and Herbie Hancock Future Shock concert.

Played some 2 on 2 games with Franco. With those quick feet of his he traveled a lot, but I wasn't about to call him on it.

Super bowl Sunday, 2007. My wife and I walking my son out to his introduction on Senior Day, in front of a full house assembled for the Iowa dual. An hour later, from neutral, he catches Iowa's returning All American and pins him, catapulting PSU to an upset victory. Unforgettable for our family.
