Can you recall your greatest memory of event(s) at Rec Hall?

Super bowl Sunday, 2007. My wife and I walking my son out to his introduction on Senior Day, in front of a full house assembled for the Iowa dual. An hour later, from neutral, he catches Iowa's returning All American and pins him, catapulting PSU to an upset victory. Unforgettable for our family.
Indeed. Thanks for sharing. You’ll forgive me if every now and then I try to live vicariously through you.

Barry was even more than a star, he was closer to a superstar. He was the ACC Athlete of the Year, and if you go through that list, you'll find legendary names in lots of sports, such as:

1956 Dave Sime, Duke - Track and Field
1961 Roman Gabriel. NC State - Football
1965 Brian Piccolo, Wake Forest - Football
1972 Barry Parkhill, Virginia - Basketball
1973/75 David Thompson, NC State - Basketball
1976 John Lucas, Maryland - Basketball
1979 Renaldo Nehemiah, Maryland - Track and Field
1982 James Worthy, North Carolina - Basketball
1983 Ralph Sampson, Virginia - Basketball
1984 Michael Jordan, North Carolina - Basketball
1986 Len Bias, Maryland - Basketball
1991/92 Christian Laettner, Duke - Basketball
1991/92 Dawn Staley, Virginia - Basketball
1993 Mia Hamm, North Carolina - Soccer
1993/94 Charile Ward, Florida State - Basketball and Football
1997 Tim Duncan, Wake Forest - Basketball
2006 J.J Redick, Duke - Basketball
2003/04 Alana Beard, Duke - Basketball

Most of those on the list above are Hall of Fame caliber people in their sport. I left a bunch of recognizable names off the list just because they didn't quite reach Hall of Fame level.

Parkhill was that good while at UVA - and the victory over him in his "homecoming" game (for the youngsters who don't know, the Parkhills graduated from State College High) was.very sweet and easily in my top five Rec Hall events.
Barry Parkhill worked at the University Golf Courses as a teenager. He was my babysitter when I was a little kid on a few occasions. I remember how sad I was when he went off to college. As Great a person as you would ever meet.

Genesis 4/2/78
Doobie Bros.
Hall & Oates
Utopia
Outlaws
1/78 upset of Oklahoma in wrestling with 167lb Ashley Swift vs the Sooners heavyweight as the last match.
One of my favorite Rec Hall moments as well.

November 17, 1991 had Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam. That was the Blood Sugar Sex Magic tour. Ten had just been released in August and the Pumpkins just released their first album as well.

Winning the 1988 CCAC(Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference) Championship as a member of the PSU Ogontz Men's Volleyball team(club). Growing up a PSU fan and getting to play volleyball all day on that surface was amazing and then playing for the championship on center court at the end of the day was topping on the cake so to speak. We played on the hardwood back then instead of the sport court they put down these days.

My favorite memory of Rec Hall was playing in a pick-up basketball game as an undergraduate in a rough and tumble game. Scott Fitzee (who went on to play in the NFL and USFL) was on my team and after my getting roughed up a little bit with some flying elbows, Scott confronted the perpetrators and threatened to take matters into his own hands. I loved that Scott was willing to stick up for me and I am indebted to him for what he did.

Cool story.

I was in Rec shooting around when Rahsaan Carlton came in to get some shots up around late september before his jr season. After a couple of minutes I stopped and rebounded for him. Eventually he asked if I wanted to shoot while he rebounded to take a break. I could shoot and I started knocking down 3's one after another. We then played horse and I beat him pretty handily (I realize he wasn't known as a shooter). After that he invited me to stay and play pickup with some other guys on the team, Earl, Lisicky, Gaudio, etc. Got pushed around some but held my own.

Billy Joel, Edgar Winter, Loggins & Messina. Some good basketball games and gymnastics meets.

Played a lot of basketball and ran a lot of laps on the track. IIRC 8 laps = 1 mile. Also played racquetball and went bowling.

How about The Steve Miller Band. Anyone know the date of that concert?

Nice. If you can shoot, you’ll never embarrass yourself.

Have to join the family sports wagon - although not as cool as beating Iowa wrestling!

My son won one PIAA VB championship and a second on the Rec Hall floor!

I'm pretty sure I saw a Bobby Knight coached West Point team at rec hall. Coach K was on the squad

Yes, you did see Bobby Knight coach the Cadets at Rec Hall and yes, I believe that Mike K was a guard inthat game.

My guess is 1968 or 1969.

I was thinking '66

Knight coached at Army from Fall of 1965 until the spring of 1971.
Army played at Rec Hall with Knight coaching in '67, '69, and '71.
Krzyzewski played on the '67 and '69 teams (captained the '69 team) at Rec Hall. He was serving in the Army in '71.
PSU won the 1967 game in 67-57. Krzyzewski, coming off the bench, failed to score, missing both of his FG attempts.
Army won the 1969 game 64-54. Krzyzewski started and scored 5 points.

In 1966 Mike Reid walked onto the wrestling team. He immediately faced the #1 rated heavyweight -- a kid from Lehigh. Mike kicked his butt. The kid never had a chance. Reid had so much strength and power that his lack of wrestling experience meant nothing. A spectacular performance!
I was going to mention Mike Reid vs. Lehigh too, what an electric atmosphere!

Makes sense to me. I was a freshman

Great story...... Fitzkee and I were in a tennis gym class together and we hit the ball back and forth a few times. I still occasionally brag that I played with a guy that was in the NFL.

Going to Rec Hall to see the first ever Gene Wetstone dual meet against a Russian team during the cold war. In hindsight, I would like to think those kinds of events helped crack the iron curtain just a little bit.

Had to be 1960, my first wrestling, basketball doubleheader, was warned to arrive early because the place would be packed. Wrestling opened then was surprised when Rec Hall emptied for the second event, the basketball game.

My best memories are some of the great WVB matches against Stanford, Nebraska and Minn.
Also who could forget the pep rallies with JoePa firing up the crowd, the night before a big game.

I was fortunate enough to get in for a couple of points when my high school played in the 1963 PIAA tournament at Rec Hall. We drew the defending champs in the opening round and were quickly relegated to the loser's bracket where we were eliminated a couple of matches later.

1968 NCAA Wrestling Championships. I was only 12 so I don't really recall much, but Dan Gable won his first NCAA title that year. I had no idea who he was until 4 years later when he won a Gold Medal at the Olympics.

4theglory54 I had a few beers with you and your son one night when BIGs were at NW in 2011. I was also there when he pinned Tshirt.

Dead concert, late 70's or 1980. I really do not have an actual memory of this, just a series of flashbacks, alternately fabulous and horrifying. A shattering exploration of my own imagination, as various things I had consumed in the hours before the concert jerked me around like a puppet on a string. I remember that when I woke up the next day I thought I was deaf. I can't remember it, but I will never forget it.:)

Ok, I made that up, as far as you know..;)
There. I fixed it. You're welcome.
Seriously, it's fun to go back 5 years and see what you said. It is a measure of our weakness as a BB school that > half the memories are of concerts and wrestling.

Favorite memories include Louis Armstrong concert (my freshman year,’56), great basketball games vs. WVU,with Jerry West, and vs. Temple; outstanding gymnastics and wrestling matches ( one standout heavyweight wrestler was Sue Paterno’s brother, Ed ! )

Hitting a racquet ball off of my buddy's calf so hard he was laid out for ten minutes! :D

taking a break from studying and went see Iowa wrestling. Had no assigned seats. was going up the steps and like 3 rows from the top saw a seat open. could not see the faces from the two guys near the steps and when I interrupted their conversation to ask about the seat. One was my dad. had not seen in in months. We lost but had a great time

A tough memory was the Indiana basketball game when Bob Knight was still coaching and the refs screwed PSU out of a victory
I was at that game too! What a bummer because of that seriously bad call. I was under the basket with all the students going nuts (I was 45) at the end of regulation with a few seconds left and State leading by 2 when a PSU player broke free for a layup ( he was running right at me ) that sealed the game. Except the ref called him for pushing off. The Indiana guy clearly grabbed his jersey though. I heard that was confirmed on tv replay. Indiana tied and went on to win in double OT. February 10, 1993, a date that will live in infamy!

March 1966, my teammate and fellow co-captain of our HS team (Tyrone) won the state championship at 180 pounds! Gary DiDomenico beat Jeff Baum 9-8 with a takedown with little time left!
