Cortez to LP "If you dont like the way I wrestle, quit watching me"

LOL. Said tongue in cheek, but if you think about it - in what other venue is PSU wrestling discussed daily and with criticism at times? There aren't any newspaper articles about Cortez style of wrestling. Don't recall FRL saying anything. The Mat? Not that I can recall.

LemonPie - YOU'RE FAMOUS! Nice (although I disagreed with you on today).

Never understood some of what is said about any of these wrestlers...going all the way back to when Gore invented the internet.

Yea I think you get some free articles but I exceeded the limit of articles so I was unable to read without subscribing :(
Anyway, the gist of the article was that Cortez was going to take a page out of his mentors (Jesse Delgado) book and say...if you don’t like the way I wrestle then don’t watch. Says he’ll pray for those wasting their energy on criticizing his style. later on says he grateful for his opportunity in the sport and will continue doing what he’s doing and believing in himself.

no worries I saw tweets last week that the internet as we know it was ending.

The "Ill pray for you" has lasting appeal me thinks

I’m a Lemonpie backer. He may make some caustic posts, but this place needs some curmudgeons at times
I’m with you on this. Lemonpie is old school in his thinking and just straight up calls it the way he sees it. It rubs some the wrong way and that’s fine too. It takes diversity to make an interesting forum and we certainly have that here.

Look, there is no doubt that Cael and Company has spoiled us with creating a "Penn State Style" of exciting wrestling. Attack, attack and then attack some more. Who gives a S*** if you give up a TD, you'll make it up later.

Cortez doesn't fit this style, so he's not going to be a fan fave. No matter how good a kid he is or how hard he works to attain his goals. It's a tough spot.

That said, this team is part of a dynasty that has dominated the sport for the last 7 years or so. There is FIERCE competition for every spot. If Nick Lee is beating him up in the room and he can score more points at Nationals, the spot has to be his post scuffle. I do think we beat tO$U come March, but it will be VERY close. If Cortez really wants to silence his critics, beat Nick Lee in the room. Period.

I usually ignore his judgement of wrestlers and potential. By his logic Mega should not have been an AA his freshman year and Q wouldn’t have got out of big 10s as a sophomore. I have always been a Cortez fan he has what 3 losses as a Nittany Lion? His bar is a tad bit high me thinks.

Cortez is good. The issue is that he is on a team where there are so many guys who are GREAT. He isn't Zain, Nolf, or Bo. He doesn't pin or TF every guy he comes up against. PSU fans are truly spoiled that the bar is set that high that a guy that doesn't win every match by bonus is automatically a bum.

Everyone is a little bit on edge with Suriano deciding to defect and tOSU having a competitive team this year. If Suriano was still at PSU there would be no worrys about what happens in March. Nobody would care what Cortez was doing. With it shaping up to possibly be a close one in the tournament and the rumors swirling that Nick Lee is beating him people are anxious to get Lee out there and get some more points at NCAAs.

Would love to take credit, but I'd be willing to bet there are some people who litter his instagram account in the comments section. I don't go that far. I don't feel like I post about Cortez that much. Certainly not to the extent of Geno or Cutch.

Great thread, however.

Weaver is closer to 40th than 12th, so Cortez still has a bit of work before he silences any critics.

My christmas wish is that for a week in my bizzaro world Flo would allow you to rank and comment on the rankings. It would be the greatest 6 pack, cigar and internet observance time ever. Better yet would be if you did HS rankings. That would be magical comment reading.

Well I would hope he would drop a wrestler out if they haven’t wrestled for, oh, say the whole season.

Btw, it may not seem like it, but I'm always "athlete first." I'm of the belief that fans don't really matter at all. The experiences of the fan are so much different than those of the athlete. They are completely different worlds. I don't take myself seriously and I would hope that no athletes would either.

My intended audience will always be other fans, not wrestlers or their families. I'm not out there @mentioning D1 wrestlers on twitter or anything. I understand there might be some crossover if someone were to stumble across this site, but I will always defer to the athlete. What they do matters, and what I say doesn't. I'm just enjoying the ride.

Sports are silly. That's why I've been a fan my whole life.

No, it does not seem like you are "athlete first", and it would take a great deal more than this single post to counteract your 1000s of other posts that indicate the contrary.

Yah, Lemon has said a lot of dumbass stuff. But I'm with CT, Lemon adds a little flavor to the pie.

Hell, it's just a message board and we can't take it too seriously. Different perspectives are part of the deal. But, don't lie to me, it insults my intelligence, as Michael Corleone said.

Yeah...Ok... I guess we could have him “whacked”.

Shouldn’t we clear this with Tom first?

Maybe we have Downey rank the college guys?

"fans don't matter at all"? Know I'm taking that literally, which may be a mistake with the character that said it...from my view it couldn't be further from the truth.

Fan support absolutely does matter. Whether cheering from afar (listening to radio, watching streams, etc.), or butt-in-the-seat. Whether contributing just your time and energies to rah-rah, or paying extra if one has the resources... to financially support the program.

We need them all, and they do matter. No fans, no program, simple as that. And while we each (me too) have our moments where it doesn't appear we're supportive, by our words or actions, the worst of college fans in my eyes (be it football, basketball, wrestling, whatever) are those that condemn, belittle, or denigrate these young adults...those fans where the "moments of no support" are habitual. Have at it with pro athletes, our wrestlers make sacrifices and balance their "life" in a way that almost all can't fathom. Zain wasn't put on earth for any fan's personal satisfaction. He's an impressive human being that happens to have extraordinary wrestling talent...and we should remember the "human being" part. All 37 kids on the roster deserve the same support, bar none.
