Cortez to LP "If you dont like the way I wrestle, quit watching me"

Cortez should worry more about what Coach thinks than the fans. Hitting out at the fans is always a losing proposition.

Pretty much, yeah. While the "shhh" isn't really a big deal in my book, it's kind of odd. On one hand Cortez says that any criticism of him is wasted energy, yet it clearly bothers him, as indicated his "shhh" and other quotes in the article.

Surprising. Can’t believe Sanderson is a fan of the antics or letting outside talk into your head. Maybe not the best way to keep your role........but he did wrestle well against a decent kid.

I'd be shocked is Cael doesn't talk to him. Has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. A kid shhing his own fans while they cheering his victory.

IMO, good point. If something doesn't effect you, you don't react at all.
I don't know much re wrestling, but from what i see his methodical style lends itself to comment relative to the insanely active, exciting style of the top guns.

It's an improvement after his effort against Lehigh (Karam) but, yeah, a one point win over Weaver isn't really "shhh" worthy IMO.

If as noted elsewhere, Cortez took the s-ship money from Karam--my question is how good can Karam be. I went to the Lehigh dual, and it looked to me like the younger wrestler physically dominated the older.

My christmas wish is that for a week in my bizzaro world Flo would allow you to rank and comment on the rankings. It would be the greatest 6 pack, cigar and internet observance time ever. Better yet would be if you did HS rankings. That would be magical comment reading.

I'm sure there is a wrestling podcast LemonPie could get on! I've flirted with starting a PSU wrestling podcast myself. I'd have LemonPie on.

That would be cool. Ive long advocated that flo should every once and awhile interview some of the more noteworthy posters on the interwebs. I think it would be f** and f**ny.

If I do start a wrestling podcast it's going to be called the "Wrestling is f** Podcast."

It's an age-old problem of whether to react to stuff. Usually, reaction is overreaction, but sometimes a reaction *may* prevent piling on and prevent others from defining you. In presidential politics, Kerry and Gore were too dignified to react, and they got Swift-Boated and mis-defined as "wooden". Trump reacts to everything and it actually worked out for him. It's a hard call to make how much to react. In Cortez's case, if it makes him feel better to react, I would let him react, if I were coach.

Yeah, I don't know precisely how the staff feels but I would think that because Cortez is fighting for his job he'll get leeway to use whatever motivational hooks work for him, even if it means casting the PSU fans as the world in his Me vs. World construction. Shows he's competitive. I'd rather see him fight for his job than let it get taken from him.

I'm with those who don't like to see our guys criticized. I realize that there is a line between objective evaluations of performance (which I believe is valid) and trashing on a guy (in my opinion this usually comes when a fan feels personal frustration that his expectations weren't met, not getting the good feeling we all like when PSU does well etc). I agree that Cortez would have been better served not to have said anything. But I also feel for the guy. As far as I can tell he's doing all he can to hold his job and make a contribution to the team. As a fan, I want to do all I can to support a guy like that.

One other Cortez comment. He's gotten some negative comments on getting ridden by Karam. We need to be careful getting on our guys for getting ridden by a good leg guy. I remember watching Nico getting ridden out by Dance's leg ride pushing the bout into OT. Nico couldn't get out of it--his national championship year. I saw Stieber get ridden an entire 3rd period by a lowly Purdue wrestler who happened to be a good leg rider. I don't think Cortez should take too much grief for that. Would I have liked to see him shoot more on his feet. . .yeah, probably. But I respect what Cortez is able to do.

A slightly different perspective: I respect Cortez and everything he's done to wrestle at a very high level. The rehab from injury, the sacrifices any NCAA wrestler makes on a daily basis, the incredible amount of blood, sweat and tears that are required of these athletes.

That said, he didn't choose to come to just any wrestling program. HE chose to come to PSU, the juggernaut that is dominating the entire sport.

With that decision comes a very intense spotlight, shone on the team by media and fans alike. There is a tremendous amount of pressure to not just be good or very good, but to be GREAT.

It comes with the territory and hopefully he was made aware of that fact coming in. Given that premise, for him to be so sensitive to criticism as to make a shushing gesture in front of HIS HOME CROWD, shows at the best, a certain level of immaturity and at worst, a degree of narcissism that places his own concerns above those of the TEAM.

The crowd did get pretty loud with the boos at times during his match. Although it seemed they were directed towards the ref. Perhaps Cortez thought they were towards him.

One other thought on Cortez's performace. I thought he was more aggressive than previously. A couple of calls didn't go his way or the margin would have been wider. His opponent basically got an escape/TD instead of a reversal (probably correct call, but unfortunate because it was a long continuation of one move); and then it sure looked to me like Cortez had a 2-point tilt. I thought Cortez was quite aggressive on top (perhaps even too aggressive, leading to E/TD). I like the progress.

5 years of Mason Beckman indicates no.

Exactly.

Also, to whoever floated the concept of Cortez 'taking' schollie money away from Karam, wouldn't such a practice (the practice of 'wrestling' on one leg in neutral) seem like a pretty early disqualifier for someone to even be recruited by Cael?
