Dan Bernstein trying to shame Penn State into denouncing Paterno statue

Here's what @Dan_Bernstein says at 22:50:
"You have gone so far from what the previous president said, who said all the right things very clearly, and the previous trustees that have since quit because they saw what was building. They would sooner rather walk out of there when you have the former athletes and @lubrano and all the crazy people. And believe me, I've heard from people who have been in the board meetings who have reached out to me and said you would not believe what is going on in here. Especially the stuff regarding @lubrano, who is the leader of the internal crazy posse. People who know him well say that "It's all you think and ten times worse and he's not stopping." That's the source of a lot of it. It just sucks. It sucks to dredge up all these feelings as they scab over every once in a while and then you see this and you realize it's still damn there."
I view this as a positive. The OG BOT leaving isn't a bad thing, good riddance. We don't want or need their incompetence. If Lubrano is stirring the pot so be it, that's why we elected him and confirms that we've got the right man for the job in place.

The OG BOT has the ability to stop all of this at any time. They have all of the power. All they need to do is be transparent about the information they have and the reasons for their actions, because their actions appear unjustifiable based on the data that is currently public information. If they want to be secretive, then this is what they get. And we're supposed to feel sorry for them because of that? I don't think so.

No, Sandusky did not cause all of this. There were two offenses committed, separate from one another, with different sets of victims. One was that done by Sandusky, the other was the false accusations and scapegoating of innocent people for what Sandusky did. Sandusky did not cause the latter. That was done by BOT/Freeh and people like Bernstein.
I understand your point but the fact is that if Sandusky doesn't prey on kids, the latter actions from the BOT and others never happen. Root cause is JS, any way you slice it.

I think you're right. But it does sort of beg the question: if Sandusky never happened, would they have found some other reason to take down Paterno? It's obvious that some people in powerful positions had a great deal of contempt towards him. It's hard to believe that had Sandusky not happened, they would have just left him alone.

He was retiring. He ran a model program. It was extremely successful. It raked in the money. It was the biggest and best marketing arm for the university. He was, by far, the biggest fundraiser.

Fair question. I don't think we understand the feelings of some members of the BOT enough to know how far they might go to look for other opportunities to follow a similar course of action. And as the poster above me noted, Paterno was retiring that year so the window for them to take action would have been quite small, unless they tried to do something after he was gone. But the fundraiser element had to be a huge risk in their minds. Paterno was probably the path of least resistance for raising money for decades, which isn't something the BOT would take lightly.

@Dan_Bernstein just spent 40 minutes of air-time sh!tting all over PSU, JoeBots, Anthony Lubrano and even Sandy Barbour and Eric Barron. The audio will be available tomorrow, but the most interesting part: (edit) Dan said some people from the Board of Trustees meetings reached out to him and said something to the effect of, "it's everything you think but 10 times worse."

Bernstein said these former trustees stepped down or quit, and they had a particular disdain for Anthony @lubrano, whom he called out by name.

Again, the audio will be available tomorrow. Until then, here's Bernstein's column (no link) attempting to shame PSU into denouncing the Paterno statue. This is the blueprint of what our leadership will have to overcome when they choose to honor Joe Paterno.

Bernstein: Penn State, Paternos Still Insulting Victims

By Dan Bernstein

By not decrying it, they tacitly endorse it, this latest re-victimization of at least 32 boys whose rape at the hands of Jerry Sandusky was facilitated by Joe Paterno and the Penn State football program.

Neither the university nor the family of the shamed former head coach offered comment when asked by Philly.com about the construction of two new statues of Paterno and the plan by the artists to send one of them on a national tour. This re-imagined version of the mothballed original has an upraised clenched fist instead of a “number one” sign, a defiant gesture that tells those boys — now men — how little they continue to matter in the dark, sick heart of the Paterno cult.

The two sculptors casting the replicas told the website that one will be given to the Paterno family, and the other will be available “for all the fans and the people that bleed blue and white” so that the image is “making a statement.”

Paterno’s own sworn testimony and later statements to investigators said it all, however, that for years he knowingly allowed a child predator to use Penn State football as part of a personal farm for cultivating new victims. But reality has not deterred the JoeBots from creating alternate worlds in which this never happened, and none of this was said.

The builders of the new statue will make money indeed, if they charge a nominal fee for these zombies to line up for pictures with their fallen icon. These people are compelled to feed their insatiable desire to be defined essentially by the success of a college football team. Their own self-worth is so much a function of Penn State and Paterno that they have created complicated personal fantasy worlds in which everything can be as it once was.

To date, there are 32 victims and counting, with $93 million in settlements paid out by the school and counting. But that is not as important to these people as revising Paterno’s history to ease their own pain, trying to make themselves feel whole again.

When the original was first taken down from its place outside Beaver Stadium, the university correctly assessed that it would represent for victims “a recurring wound” and would be “a source of division and an obstacle to healing.” It was and is the obvious right thing.

There was pushback at the time, though, and the ensuing years have only brought a stronger desire to restore it, as the JoeBots have coalesced outside the school and are still rotting it from within. A Quinnipiac poll a year ago found that 59 percent of Pennsylvania residents wanted the statue put back, with strong support across gender and age groups.

The new Penn State administration has already softened the school’s stance. They’ve realized that their constituency is motivated deeply and in twisted enough fashion to ignore the obvious message to victims raped on their campus, in their football building, over many years by a beloved, trusted coach. Of course that coach was allowed unfettered access to children and facilities long after many, including Paterno, were well aware of his criminal behavior.

Athletic Director Sandy Barbour kept open the possibility that Penn State would reinstall the statue, telling USA Today, “if, and or when there comes a time, it will be in good shape.” President Eric Barron is also reconsidering all that stuff his predecessor said about any obstacles or recurring wounds, saying last year, “A decision is not imminent. I will follow a process of deliberation and discussion that will take time.”

That’s why the school is now choosing silence when asked about the new version and the planned traveling roadshow. This is fine with them now, until we hear otherwise.

Same goes for members of the Paterno family, who have seen their patriarch’s own admissions under oath change their futures irreparably. They hire lawyers and PR consultants and fan the flames amid the worshipful lost souls, but there’s no going back. They won’t comment either, because they have to embrace any help with imaging, those 32 or more victims be damned.

They’d be better off instead heeding the words of son Jay Paterno near the end of the award-winning documentary film Happy Valley. Of the family name, he says, “It used to mean one thing, now it means something else.”

The sooner that truth is actually recognized, the better. Instead, we get continued efforts to lionize a man who spent years knowing he was doing less than everything in his power to protect innocent children from a monster. Such things must continue to be called out and shouted down by those who actually care.

32 victims. $93 million. 0 statues.

Its funny, but which trustee thought talking to someone like Bernie was a fulfillment of their fiduciary duty? I can't imagine a PR firm would think this is a good strategy. Also, isn't there a board rule about not speaking negatively about another member?

"I am just glad that Dan Bernstein didn't make more crass and offensive sexist comments when he slandered my family yesterday."

I've heard whispers that some of the negative press during the 2000s was part of an orchestrated effort against Paterno. There was a sense that rather than treating the FB players like any other student in trouble (the fair way thing to handle things) that local law enforcement was actually being encouraged to target FB players. I don't know if that's true, but it would dovetail into Triponey's effort to single out FB players to "make an example of them." I don't have any doubt that some people -- especially the Surmas -- were actively looking for something, anything to use as a weapon against Paterno.

Fact.

"Both Bernstein and Spiegel apologized on the air for their comments. “I’m an idiot,” Bernstein said at the time. “My tweet was childish, my tweet was crass and unnecessary, and I’m sorry I dragged an innocent person into it who’s doing a job, and I made an observation I shouldn’t have made, and it was childish and silly and stupid.”

http://www.robertfeder.com/2015/06/17/great-scott-score-suspends-bernstein-for-another-tweet/

Condemned by Bernstein? What about Jay Mariotti, does he have negative things to say about Joepa and Joepa supporters? Any condemnation from OJ?

Sandusky is spending the remaining years of his life in prison. There is more than enough disdain to go around. When someone can convince me that Lubert and Joyner did not use the crisis to hijack the athletic department, I'll reconsider. When the entire work product of Louis the Liar is public knowledge, I might reconsider. When I'm proven wrong in my believe that John Surma was doing family business, I'll reconsider. When I am satisfied that Frazier wasn't posturing for favors from The Commonwealth, I'll reconsider. When Fina is disbarred and Baldwin has her law license suspended, I'll reconsider. You get the message. "I'm not drinking YOUR koolaide."

Since none of that is likely to happen, I'll put you in the "mind is made up" column.

Someone should shame his family into denouncing him as a legitimate member. The guy is sick. Glad he keeps popping up here. This is his source of pub.

Sort of like Kanye constantly ripping Taylor Swift just to stay somewhat in the headlines.

eh, a Duke grad....I guess it's to be expected.
Ouch...I was hoping no one would point that out.

http://sports.cbslocal.com/2015/03/04/bernstein-duke-krzyzewski-cant-stonewall-forever/

Bernstein also ragged on Coach K with baseless charges of a coverup regarding former player Rasheed Sulaimon.

"Krzyzewski is in charge of that team and that school, make no mistake. Forget job titles and understand the way things work in the real power structure of major colleges and revenue-generating sports. As we learned with Joe Paterno and the Penn State child-rape scandal, Coach answers to nobody.

When Duke last faced sports ignominy, you’ll remember, major news was made when Krzyzewski decided to speak publicly about the embattled lacrosse team that was eventually exonerated. No federal privacy laws prevented his lukewarm words of half-hearted support for the athletes in the middle of nationally-covered controversy, with FERPA only deployed when his own program and reputation were in the crosshairs.

The questions about how Krzyzewski handled the Sulaimon cases will not be going away, because they should not.

If need be, we’ll wait him out."

Agree about the root cause. No way around that.

But Jerry didn't issue Penn Staters the scarlet letters we're currently wearing for being his enabler -- that was Freeh. Nor did he accept them our behalf -- that was Peetz.

"I am just glad that Dan Bernstein didn't make more crass and offensive sexist comments when he slandered my family yesterday."

Would be great to see the Paternos sue for slander and get Bernstein on the stand under oath.

Wick Sollers: "So Mr. Bernstein, which of the former PSU trustees reached out to you saying, "it's everything you think but 10 times worse."

Bernstein: "Eerrrrhh, ahhh, well um I just sort of made that up." .... in which case he admits he slandered the Paternos and is simply full of schnitt.

OR

Bernstein: "It was XXXXXX and it seemed truthful to me" ... in which case he saves his own bacon but exposes a (some) BOT scoundrels.

One can dream, right?

No one had but our own ChiTown keeps getting him attention.
I posted the article for 3 reasons:
1. Dan is saying that people from BOT meetings have been reaching out to him to smear our alumni-elected reps. Damn right we should be aware of this. Didn't the old guard institute the "Lubrano rule" to supposedly prevent exactly this?
2. Reading columns like this is akin to getting a look at the enemy's playbook. We all need to be prepared to overcome the inevitable backlash when the school finally decides to honor Joe Paterno. We can dissect those points here and go back into the real world armed with the necessary artillery.
3. Hold Dan Bernstein accountable and smoke out the double-agent moles. Lubrano's not the only one who's taken notice of these hit pieces.

1. So what? That doesn't make it true. His job is to get attention, and he certainly has yours.
2. He has said nothing we haven't heard before. What makes him special?
3. He's on a very long list, so again, why is every single thing he says brought up here by you repeatedly?

I think you've done an excellent job, especially on social media, of bringing these sorts of things to light. But it strikes me that you're not doing that with DB. It would be generous to suggest that 5 people on this entire board knew who he was before you started posting every incendiary comment he makes on here; it seems oddly out of character for you, unless your purpose is to help him get the attention he's seeking from outside his market. Whether that is your intention or not, you're succeeding.

Honoring Joe became attainable the day the Alumni Trustees gained access to the Freeh materials. The administration keeps pointing to the trials of C/S/S as the bellweather event for being able to honor Joe, and this is an absurd notion. Those trials have nothing to do with Joe Paterno.

The only obstacle to properly honoring Joe is the Freeh Report. Once the report is (very) publicly invalidated, Joe can be honored without controversy.

Thanks for the honest response. Living in Chicago and seeing first-hand how one man has poisoned an entire city's opinion about Penn State, I suppose I'm especially incensed by Bernstein's shock-jock radio shtick and I want to see him taken down. Hard. We've taken down Corbett, Olbermann, and many others. It's just a matter of time before the bell rings for Dan.

The whole fricken city of Chicago knows who that sissy pri(k is. ChiTown has done us all a service by letting us know that one of "our own", maybe more, are stabbing your own University of "36 years" in the back. In fact ChiTown is one of the best posters on this Board. Lay off him. I haven't read any of your useless garbage until today.

I one thousand percent agree. Every time I'm there and have to hear that jerkoff spew his bullsh!+ all over the third largest DMA in America, I want to put my fist right through a window. He influences the minds of FAR more people than any shock jock in Pittsburgh does. At least in a place like Pittsburgh, there are enough of us to combat it.

Love how that's in quotes, like I'm not allowed to have a dissenting opinion. Then again, I have read your useless garbage, so it lines up with your fascist tendencies.

I agree about ChiTown, which is why I found it so out of character. Have you been advertising for any Buffalo shock jocks of no consequence?
