There’s been some said about Jeanty coming up just short of Barry Sander’s record. Yes, he got 104 yards on 30 carries, but it doesn’t tell the story of how much PSU’s defense dominated him.

- of his 30 carries, 22 of them were for 3 yards or less.
- he only had 3 carries where he gained a first down. He got 45 of his 104 yards on these carries.
- he had two forced fumbles - almost as many fumbles as first downs
- 0 TD’s

So, 73% time he got the ball, the team was still in a long yardage situations after the play. That is an amazing stat. It wasn’t like he had 6-7 first downs in short yardage situations bringing down his average either.

People are completely full of $hit regarding how stats actually transpired in a game - you're absolutely correct about that. They use gross generalizations and spout conclusions that are simply not true.

I'll give you another example - I pointed out how bad our soft matchup zones were in the game, how they made BSU's QB look like a great passer (and he isn't) and how those coverage schemes are going to bite us in the ass if not fixed..... I had multiple posters tell me Madsen's yards came in garbage time.... blah, blah, blah.... The reality is BSU scored their 2nd TD on their first possession of the 2nd Half with 11:38 off of a 53 yard pass via an utterly blown coverage off of one of PSU's match up 3-deep Zone Coverage packages (IOW through 33:22 of the game 55% of the game, Madsen had thrown for 191 yard on 11 competitions of 14 attempts [79% Comp %] and BSU had scored 2 TDs and drawn within 3 points of PSU 17-14 after PSU had gotten out to a 14-0 lead in 1st Qtr. Through that score by BSU, BSU had put up 215 yards of Total Offense. In reality, Madsen's ARM (and PSU's abysmal zone package Pass Defense Schemes) accounted for 90% of BSU's Total Offensive yardage to the point of the game BSU scored its second TD and drew within 3 points of PSU!

BSU's running game had only put up 24 yards through the end of their 1st Possession of the Second Half AFTER they had just scored their 2nd Touchdown! (which is exactly what you are talking about - Jeantry was a complete non-factor in First Half. Just utterly invisible. I believe 50% of his 104 yards on 30 carries came off of 3 carries all in 2H (fully 25% of his total rushing yardage came off his long carry [26 yards] - on his other 29 carries, Jeantry averaged 2 2/3 ypc. IOW, he was a non-factor in BSU's successes on offense.).

People's assumed belief that the majority of Madsen's 304 passing yards came in "garbage time" is just not true! They came while the OUTCOME of the game was VERY MUCH in doubt. What came in "garbage time" (i.e., the latter part of 3rd and 4th after PSU scored on 2nd Possession of 2H to restore 2 possession lead.... and then Singleton slammed the door shut with his score).... was most of Jeantry's yardage, but it was meaningless as BSU's running game was not consistent and they couldn't sustain drives at all but the kept running the ball (especially in 4Q) as if they'd given up and were just trying to get Jeantry the record via volume of carries on a low average ypc.

Great breakdown. The defense was phenomenal against their run game. Jeanty probably needed another 10-12 carries to get the record. When a back need 30 carries to get 100 yards they're ineffective.

Take away his run of about 25 yards when Penn State had them backed up deep near their end zone on a third and 22 or so and his yards per carry suddenly drops to under three. I can’t believe they let him get the first down on that run as I think everybody would’ve guessed that they were either throwing a screen or running a draw With that far to go.
