I just got off the phone and got tickets to the Opera tomorrow night at the Benedum Center. Going to see Puccini's Turandot.

Turnadot has one aria that many of you will recognize. Take a listen to Philadelphia's own, the incomparable Mario Lanza, as he performs Nessum Dorma.

Jeezis, how the hell are you going to make time to get to a football game with so many options available to you???

I think you're safe. All Pitt fans are apparently opera fans, but not all opera fans are Pitt fans.

I believe I learned yesterday that to be a fan involved excretion of bodily fluids.

Not really Fox, you can pass him off as Anthony Lubrano and now your Penn State again.

It does not. It just means you are as committed to Pitt football as a Pitt fan.

Only if you choose the opera over PSU games.

...as you may or may not know that aria - "None Shall Sleep" - was one of Joe's favorites...
... the whole story of the opera is one of constant struggle where no one was ever able to solve the riddle, and therefore forfeited their life... until the end...
...enjoy!!!!...

Thank you sir! I know the story line of Turandot. I know Joe inherited his love of opera from his Dad. I did NOT know 'Nessun Dorma' was his favorite. Yet more evidence of good taste.

Love Turandot. Lovely, lush, delicate music wrapped around an incredibly dark twisted story.

It certainly is. I don't like the story much at all. But the music . . . .

BTW there is wonderful version of this on DVD (or maybe streamable) filmed at the Forbidden City in Bejing. I think it was Bernardo Bertollucci who got permission from the Chinese government to film it 15 or 20 years ago. High budget production, great costumes and in that setting...just amazing.

There's a clip on You Tube of a kid from Blue Band singing this with trombones. I don't know how to link it. Absolutely fantastic.

I get the gag (a good one), but on a serious note, sign up to be a Pgh opera "benefactor" if you haven't already. It's reasonable and they have a number of free shows throughout the year featuring their academy repertory cast, the 20-somethings who are in training. I'm not a sophisticated listener, but they sound as impressive to me as the bigger "stars" that come in for the Bennedum shows. The Opera really is a gem ... ask any sPitter
