Equipment Penalties?

In a few different games today I saw players pulled off the field for a play for equipment violations. One App State guy just looked like he had to pull his jersey down over his gut. In another game a player's knee pads extended slightly below his pants.

Is this some new NCAA officiating directive?

Yeah it was something they went over in the off-season. The cropped jersey rule was instituted a year or two ago iirc
