1. They have the best player in the league: Saquon Barkley is a beast. There's no better word for it. He was the Big Ten's offensive player of the year, he shredded USC's defense in the Rose Bowl and he ran a hand-timed, sub 4.4 40-yard dash in winter workouts. He accumulated nearly 1,900 total yards last season with 22 total touchdowns, and with two years of experience under his belt, he should be even better in 2017. Barkley is a serious Heisman Trophy candidate, and he's the type of player who can drag his team to a title.

2. They might also have the best quarterback in the league: Going into last season, and even deep into it, there wasn't much debate that Ohio State's J.T. Barrett was the Big Ten's top quarterback. But Trace McSorley had a better season than Barrett. So much so that the league awarding Barrett its quarterback of the year trophy now looks pretty silly. McSorley threw for 3,614 yards and 29 touchdowns, with only eight interceptions. He got better as the season went along and was at his best in the Big Ten championship game, when he destroyed Wisconsin's elite defense for 384 passing yards and four scores. With Barkley and McSorley in the same backfield, running Joe Moorhead's high-paced offense, this will continue to be a pick-your-poison situation for opposing defenses.

3. The talent is getting better: It's still pretty amazing what James Franklin and his staff were able to do last season with such a young roster, as Penn State finally began to emerge out of the sanctions era. The kicker is that not only are several key players back, but the young ones who are coming in might be even more talented. Franklin has recruited very well, and former problem areas like the offensive line are rounding into legitimate upper-tier Big Ten units. This is illustrated by the team's testing during winter conditioning. Strength coach Dwight Galt told reporters recently that the Lions had two players run in the 4.4 second range in the 40 back in 2014. Now they have five players, including Barkley, in the 4.3s. Other benchmarks like, well, the bench press are the highest they've been in years as well. The weight room isn't the same as the football field, but this program is assembling more and more high-level athletes.

4. Experienced secondary: Penn State's defense has some question marks up front. But the back end boasts plenty of experience. Three starters return, including the underrated Marcus Allen at safety and cornerbacks John Reid and Grant Haley. One of the safety spots is up for grabs this spring, but Troy Apke played in every game as a backup last season. Division rivals Ohio State and Michigan will be basically starting from scratch with their defensive backs in 2017, though they have a lot of talent to work with.

5. Hunger: The Nittany Lions accomplished an awful lot in 2016, but they also fell just short enough of their ultimate goals to still be hungry for more this fall. They didn't make the College Football Playoff despite winning a stacked Big Ten and beating the league's playoff representative, Ohio State. They squandered a lead in Pasadena and lost a heartbreaker in the Rose Bowl. They will be eager for revenge against rival Pitt and to avenge last year's blowout at Michigan when the Wolverines come to Beaver Stadium. Combine the talent, experience and hunger, and you've got a recipe for a possible repeat.

These are 5 good reasons why we should have a good shot at repeating, but games are not won from paper reasons alone. There is a lot of heart and soul that goes into each game, and a paper thin margin in talent levels between Penn State, OSU, WI and Michigan. Therefore, team preparation, game day coaching and players belief they can win are as or more important than the paper reasons. I truly do believe that we will prevail, but will not be an easy task. Our most difficult game will be at the shoe where we have had hard times historically. I think McSorley, Barkley and the rest of our team will want to show the world that last year was NOT a fluke. And look out Pitt and Michigan, because revenge should be sweet for us!

Thought this thread was gonna be about Wrestling and our 5 National Champions repeating in 2018.

They had one with Ohio State yesterday. I wonder if they'll do it for every team in the conference;)

Hopefully people outside this league will start to realize how inbred the whole thing is. Maybe the national media being fooled into picking OSU as the CFP rep will again bring more notoriety to the people that run this league.

Every team except for Rutgres. There is no way on God's green Earth they could come up with 5 reasons.....

1. All 85 scholarship football players on the other 13 conference teams suddenly and spontaneously combust, leaving Rutgres as the lone remaining conference team. By default, they become conference champions.

That is the best I have.

Come on Judge,
Everyone knows PSU winning the. Big Ten last year was a fluke and McSorley just threw the ball up for grabs.

Just ask any Michigan or Ohio State fan, they will tell you.....

I can't wait for the season to start. The sooner Penn State loses the better. They'll lose 3+ B1G games this year.
There's a bunch of reasons.
1) Ohio State and Michigan just have better players than Penn State and it isn't even close. Look at 3 year average of recruiting class ranking. Returning 18 players is wonderful and all, but all of them but Barkley aren't that good.
2) Penn State overachieved tremendously last year. Everything went right. 11 wins was the absolute top of the ceiling for Penn State last year. Why would anyone expect you to be better than your absolute best? That combination of skill and luck is impossible to repeat.
3) Penn State was severely outplayed against every top tier team they played last year: Michigan, Ohio State and USC. If you're capable to look past the final score and actually paid attention to the game, you could clearly see they were outclassed.
Sorry to break your heart, but they're a 9 win team at best in 2017.
Ohio State will be favorited because they're just better. USC didn't outplay Penn State? USC had more ran plays, more yards, almost double the amount of passing yards, 10 more first downs. They won almost every offensive category. I did watch the game. I'm wondering if you did. Take off those blue and white glasses you're looking at your team With and be real for a second. They are not a championship caliber team. The only things Penn State has going for them is James Franklin and Barkley. That's just enough to be the 3rd best team in the division.

Which is why number 5 below is so important IMO:

Ask the LSU lad if he watched the OSU game and believe we were out-played, then how did we sack JT "6 times." No one else in the Big accomplished that, not even Michigan.

Also ask the lad since LSU had "way more talent" than Wisky, why did they get their butt kicked up in Camp Randall. And, we beat Wisky later on which, according to him, was another "fluke."

Okay, Lambeau. LSU had more talent than Wisky according to the criteria used by their fan, but got beat. And, we beat Wisky. 99% accurate other than the location which is irrelevant.

Phil Steele's projected AP Top 10

It is important to make the point that this is NOT my preseason Top 10 for next season, rather what I am projecting the AP Top 10 will look like to start the season.

As mentioned on Monday, my predicted AP Top 10 was a perfect 10-for-10 in 2016! The EIGHT year totals are very strong. When I predict the AP Top 10 in February/March (about a HALF YEAR ahead of the actual AP poll), I have now hit on 76 of 80 teams. That means hitting all 10 teams in four of the eight years and missing by just one team in the other four years. Once again, predicting the top ten teams in the AP poll 5-6 MONTHS in advance, the record is now 76 out of 80 or 95%!

Here is my 2017 Projected AP Top 10.

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Florida State
4. USC
5. Oklahoma
6. Clemson
7. Penn State
8. Washington
9. Wisconsin
10. Florida
