Essential or non-essential....

My oldest daughter lives in Hoboken and works in Manhattan. Hoboken has been on a 8PM -5AM curfew all week. However, her employer was still requiring employees to come to work on staggered hours. Last night she called me and let me know a co-worker tested positive for Covid-19. And her employer knew that they had an employee that was being tested due to being symptomatic. She works in the sales area of a custom garment producing company and the manufacturing is in a different location in Manhattan (where the positive employee works), although other employees go back and forth to her office location. And the real stupidity of her employer is that most seamstresses in NYC are older women. We need to be smarter as a nation. It is these lapses in judgment that will prolong this. I had a younger employee request a week's vacation beginning March 26th to Austin, TX last week due to the dramatically lowered airfares. Yesterday I told him if he goes, he can use his last 2 weeks of vacation in self-quarantine, or take 2 weeks unpaid to self-quarantine before returning to work. It's his choice. Today I'll find out what his decision is.
We were scheduled to go to SD next week to visit our Navy kid, before he deploys. I've known the decision was coming for more than a week, but kept hoping that Mrspa would see everything going on and come to the realization herself. We finally had the discussion Monday.

Yesterday, she came home and told me it's just as well that we didn't go, as her employer announced 14 day unpaid/vacation time self-quarantine if you fly anywhere. One of her co-workers is going to be surprised when she gets back from Florida.

Well after 33 years of parking my behind at the same desk, we have a first. We have come to the decision of shuttering our production plant for a minimum of 2 weeks. We are telling our employees they will be paid for the first 2 weeks, but if it stretches beyond that they will have to use vacation and PTO before filing for any unemployment benefits. It is actually market driven, but hopefully these types of closures will flatten the growth curve of the pandemic. We have never had any kind of shutdown in our existence. It will be weird coming here next week with a quiet plant. Stay safe folks!
First of all please know I am not questioning the rule, just looking for understanding. Is that normal that someone has to use vacation or PTO before filing for unemployment? Standard procedure?

We just brought our daughter home from Chicago last night. She was working from home there. I think it's better she work from home in our cottage on Lake Erie.

SOHO son refused our offer, prolly for the best as MY only employee’s wife works with the first victim in Erie. Whats the odds.

Yes, on the form it asks if you have vacation pay. If you are permanently separated from your employer, vacation pay does not affect your benefit. However, if you are temporarily furloughed it will be deducted from your benefit. As the employer, I am asked to fill out the form with the employee's information. Whether a furloughed employee can retain the vacation accrual for future use is a company policy. Our policy for FMLA dictates that vacation and PTO be exhausted before applying for leave. In the next 24 hours we will have to decide if we are modifying that with our company in this circumstance.

Wow. That sucks. I understand the HIPPA/privacy laws, but why can't they disclose the area that the victim traveled to? Seems like valuable information for others that have traveled.

Bordeaux, my wife is from Erie, Plum Street. If your daughter wants company, the wife and I will gladly join her. Especially if the cottage is on an island.

You are one decision away from a totally different life (subtitle of a book by Mark Batterson).

Didn't read the book, but the subtitle is intriguing and, I've found, very true. Most of my work life has been in Safety & Health, and in the past nearly 50 years I could write books on the crazy stuff I've seen. Are the range of behaviors we're seeing really all that surprising? Like NoVa and many others here, I'm high risk due to age. Please be safe everyone.
