Tim Brando of Fox Sports has reported that Notre Dame is having conversations about joining the Atlantic Coast Conference for football. Already a member in all other sports, the Fighting Irish would become the 15th full-time member if this were to happen. Should the ACC be looking for a 16th, surely the University of Connecticut would be a leading candidate.

So why in the hell did we extend them an offer to join the Big Ten Hockey program?

Absolutely stupid to prostitute ourselves for this sanctimonious university of dubious hypocrisy!!

Most likely ND can play in another conference since ACC doesn't have an ice hockey program. Similar to PSU and OSU men's volleyball play in separate conferences because the B10 doesn't have a men's v-ball program. Love or hate ND, it makes sense to include them in B10 hockey as it upgrades the conference for that sport.

This is the best part of the article. Would Pitt ever finish better than 6th in the coastal behind ND, Miami, UNC, Va Tech, and UConn? They couldn't beat Uconn in the Big East

If the Big 12 falls apart you can scratch the ACC off the list of destinations for Texas unless the ACC wants to bloat itself to 18 members.

No it does not Andy.

You don't include ND in any conference program and expect it to upgrade YOUR hockey program sir.

It is foolish to think otherwise sir IMO.

Look how far the PSU men's program has come without ND.

And when you look where we finished this year, why do we need them again?

'Nuff said.

If ND truly goes in as the 15th member for all sports, Penn State ought to look at going in as number 16. F the BIG.

If and when ND needs to join a conference I think their only real choice will be the Big 10. The ACC is really an awkward fit :)

Actually, if the BiG was willing to take ND for sports other than football then they would be Big 10. To their credit the Big said no. Basically all or nothing.
ND will make that choice when the time comes.

Don't see how joining the ACC benefits their recruiting, but the question is will it benefit PSU? That is about the only thing I care about.

acc may be an awkward fit, but i could see it. nd wants no part of the meat grinder that is the bt. they'll go the easy way.

Some nd athletic supporters have criticized Penn State over the years for being unable to sustain itself as an independent the way nd has. The simple fact is that nd has attracted a lot of money over the years as an independent for being overrated.

Now, how do nd athletic supporters rationalize this overture to the acc? How about this? It enables nd to attract even more money for being overrated.

There is really something about: ND vs Michigan, or PSU, or MSU, etc. There is NO such match up in the ACC. Granted there are some good teams in the ACC. BUT historically ND (other than the USC game) IS a Big 10 team :)
Then again we gave up our eastern rivalries for the Big.

UConn as an athletic department is a disaster right now in everything other than women's basketball, which isn't by itself going to matter one iota in getting an ACC bid. I'd actually think Temple is a better candidate, especially as they progress closer to building their own stadium.

The only reason this makes sense from an ACC perspective is if Notre Dame being a full member would be the tipping point to the ACC Network becoming a reality. There's understandably a lot of hand wringing around the future of these high-dollar college sports networks, but ND joining the ACC as a full member could very well give them enough leverage to make it happen.

If true, this might be a sign of an impending breakup of the Big 12. There has been talk in the past of the Texas joining the ACC, although I think geographically it makes no sense (but then neither does ND in the ACC). Contractually ND is bound to joining the ACC, but I wouldn't be surprised if the ACC has an out in the event other schools join and the ACC doesn't want to go above a certain number of members. So, ND might be looking to get in before it happens to ensure they have a seat in one of the remaining power conferences.

It's also possible that Texas is more serious about joining the ACC than the B1G, and since they (ND and Texas) have become BFF's in recent years, this is a package deal of sorts. The ACC has also signaled a willingness to bend over to accommodate football schools, so maybe they will allow them to keep the Longhorn Network, which is more of a vanity object than anything at this point.

Another possibility is Oklahoma and Texas to the B1G, Notre Dame and Kansas to the ACC. Kansas basketball would be a fit for a basketball driven conference.

I haven't heard anything in awhile but the idea of the Power Conferences breaking away from the NCAA altogether in most or all sports (or even just football) is a possibility. And ND probably won't be getting anymore ND exceptions under that scenario, forcing them to join a conference.

I would absolutely LOVE to get the hell out of this crap conference. Notre Dame knows that not even they would get a fair shake from the conference if their interests came up against the Buckeyes or scUM. They know it would be the Big 2 and little 14. They will refuse to be treated like that unlike our leadership.

Notre Dame doesn't move the dial the way they once did. Of the top 40 most watched college football games going back to 2014, ND appears in just three of them.

2014 vs. Florida State
2015 vs. Clemson
2016 Fiesta Bowl vs. Ohio State

Perhaps they're realizing the best way to secure their TV $$$ is to become a full member somewhere....and they already essentially play an ACC-lite schedule.

There was a time I cared about ND joining the B1G a lot more but at this point getting them into a conference is more important to me than what conference they join. If it's the ACC, life as far as PSU football is concerned doesn't change one iota.

Uh huh. Not going to happen.

BTW, ask the ACC schools how they like the Carolina Mafia that runs that conference. And just how welcoming do you think those southern schools would be to a northern school?

Joining the ACC for ND makes a ton of sense. The ACC in my opinion has made a smart move if their Network comes through. They may not make the money the B1G makes but their TV deal is set up to give them a ton of Primetime exposure. Just like Louisville grew their football brand by taking all of those Thursday night primetime games. I could see the ACC doing well with their added exposure. Notre Dame is a dying brand and needs this new exposure.

I certainly agree ND will need to join a conference no matter how distasteful it may be to their very large collective ego. Also, a potential ACC network needs more than two large football brands with recent success (Clemson, FSU) to entice people to watch. Few ACC fan bases are large or rabid enough. Not many eyeballs would be watching a Pitt/Wake Forest game.

NBC owns the rights to ND home games through 2025. With already doing 5 games per year, there would only be 1 or 2 additional games per year that the ACC will have rights to until 2026. There isn't much that will fall to the ACC Network. NBC has no incentive to give up he rights as their using that to bolster NBCSN.

NBCSN = Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation Sports Network !!!!

I have heard zero talk of ND to the ACC anytime soon. The ACC just released ND's ACC schedule through 2035. 5 games per year.

The Big 12 needs a majority or super majority of its members to agree to disband and dissolve the media grant of rights. If this has any truth to it ND joining the ACC now does not necessarily mean the ACC adds a 16th team anytime soon, preferring to wait for another big school (PSU, Texas). The ACC can have WVU or UConn anytime they want.

As far as ND hockey joining the B1G, they definitely improve the league. The B1G needs teams and Minnesota- Duluth, Miami (Oh) and North Dakota along with ND would be great additions.

No they don't.

Stop spewing the pro-ND bullsheet.

Only two things will survive the nuclear wars, one is cockroaches and the other is rumors that ND will join a conference. I'll believe ND has joined a conference for all sports the day it's official and not a moment sooner.

As far as the ACC starting a network in 2019, isn't the slow demise of cable causing the slow demise of the attractiveness of conference networks? The fewer people you can bilk into paying for your channel even though they don't actually want it the less lucrative life is, as ESPN has been learning lately.

And Texas to the ACC? Really? If Texas leaves the Big 12 I think it's gotta be for either the Pac-however-many or the SEC. No way Texas joins a conference that is as not into football as the ACC.
