While I don't think that the new proposal is a bad idea, the old plan seemed to work for Roger Staubach. Plus the service academies would get some "free advertising" by having their professional players out in the public eye.

Talked to an Academy parent today. Both son and daughter at the academies. Firmly against it. They are there to become leaders of professional warriors. He acknowledge the public eye point but said that isnt the reason of attending.

How many NFL-quality guys do the service academies ever put out? One every couple years?

I'd be curious how many graduates last more than their 5 years.

There’s always an application process for formal educational goodies. “Top of the class” was more important to my post than the “USMA” part; I was responding to a post describing the experience of a West Pointer sent to med school. The statute authorizing FLEP and the Army’s FLEP regs give TJAG the discretion to send 25 soldiers to law school every year. The Army says they sent 25 in FY12.

Right, thanks - I think my post came off differently than intended. That said, I knew a few FLEPs while in the Army and there is a political component as well, as in if you are tight with someone in JAG (especially in TJAGs office), your chances for FLEP increase. For some reason I recall a much lower annual number but this was in the early 00's.

Do you have a name or just looking for someone in general?

No certain person. I am not even sure if its the right place to call. they have historian number but i never get called back. Looking for info on VII Corp and a unit of the combat eng. on DDay. Someone told me to call the ACOE. But i dont know

I'd actually like to see a similar scenario for regular kids. Let them go to the pros after three years and give them an opportunity to come back to finish their degree and/or graduate courses free of charge. Perhaps double the years played (if you play three years of undergrad, you get three years of graduate classes for free).

One point to keep in mind is that for the Cold War period all of the grads of the Acadamies were needed on active duty. Because of the size of the Army (Navy and Air Force) many of grads of ROTC were also needed on active duty. With the end of the Cold War fewer officers were needed. Many of the ROTC grads were/are not assigned to active duty. In addition not all the acadamy grads were needed on active duty. Any shotfall from the acadamies could be easily made good by tapping the grads of ROTC. I believe this is part of the reasons for considering a change in policy.

Not to be taken seriously. The guy just says whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear.
