stretch to me, but who knows now a days. If for some reason CJF had walked out the door at PSU, would this be the guy you hired at PSU? Even if you take his coaching experience and transfer it from Pros to College?? (instead of the Tuskers have him GA some place, followed by 2011- present various jobs at say MSU?)

Coaching career
McVay began his coaching career as an assistant wide receivers coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. The following year in 2009, he was the wide receivers/quality control coach for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. In 2010, he was hired as the assistant tight ends coach Washington Redskins. He was then promoted to tight ends coach, a position he held from 2011 to 2013. On January 14, 2014, he was promoted by new Washington Redskins head coach, Jay Gruden, to offensive coordinator. In his first year as offensive coordinator, he turned the team's offense into the 12th ranked pass offense in the NFL -- averaging 268.4 passing yards per game with first-year starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins -- the 17th ranked rush offense, with 97.9 rushing yards per game, and the 10th ranked total offense in the NFL, a year after the team's offense finished ranked 25th in total offense, averaging 24.3 points per game and 353.8 total yards per game. In his second year as offensive coordinator, the offense ranked as the 3rd best pass offense in the NFL with 309.3 passing yards per game, improved to the 20th ranked rush offense after being 25th the year prior (averaging 106.0 rushing yards per game), and finished 12th overall in total offense, averaging 24.8 points per game and 385.6 total yards per game.

On January 12, 2017, McVay was hired as the Los Angeles Rams head coach, which made him the youngest head coach in NFL history at the age of 30.[1]

Rams are so screw up.. Chargers might sneak by them as THE LA team if they do not turn their organization/ team around quickly.

How many really good HCs are there in the league? Five? Eight? Guys last too long because when things go sour they fire some lackey. So you have teams taking a shot with some unknown commodity because the alternative is a proven loser. I understand it.

looks to me, its more of the flavor of the month in this case. 30 yrs old? Heck most players arent considered old at 30, so here's the coach?
I get what you are saying, except I would dig a little deeper. I'd try to at least find someone who's been at HC at some level before I'd turn over the keys. Find a asst NFLer who's been around, and was maybe a HC in college at some level, or heck even a HC in HS.
or go the career NFL asst who has been through the wringer, but presents his vision for a team, in other words, the next Andy Reid. Is say Frank Reich that guy? Who knows, but we do know Frank has been around, is a very smart guy, seems to be well liked in the league.
And I am just pulling Frank name out of the air, not saying he is the answer.

I get you Sluggo, and that's the route I would probably go as a GM but who knows, maybe he's somebody's boy in the FO, maybe it's a panic move, time will tell. I just think in today's league you can swing for the fences with a nobody or you can pick up Rex Ryan. It's a gamble either way and this is the path the Rams chose. There's probably a middle ground there as well. If he's got fans in the FO I would expect he'll be around awhile even if the Rams continue to stink and if they do and I were an assistant coach, I would have my head on a swivel. Can he command the respect of guys older than him on the practice field and the locker room? Again, time will tell!

Yep. His grandfather hired Jon Gruden back in the day, and so Gruden hired McVey in Tampa Bay. Then he gets a job with Washington, and the other Gruden brother gives him a promotion when he gets the Washington head job.

In other words, it ain't about what you know, it's who you know.
