FC: Saban inks new eight year deal...

It’s a 1 year extension (with a small addition per year) on his current contract, but perception is reality when it comes to the media.

Also won’t take him close to 409...

If only they had one of those things during Joe's prime... What do you call it?

A playoff.

They kind of did...the BCS. Starting in 1998. Again, i’m not trying to start a Joe debate, but ask any competitor on the planet if they would rather have a wins record or a championship record I’m pretty sure they would answer the latter...at least I would. I’d still take Joe over Nick just given what he did for PSU but again...ask Joe...if you could have 409 wins record or 6 championships what would you rather have...I’d be curious.

How many championships was Joe screwed out of?

409 looks good to me.

You are right....he was screwed often! I don’t wanna catch a beat down here (which I feel like I’m on the verge of) only saying that one line of 409 vs 6 chips.

I’d take the 6 chips all the time and I’m sure Joe would as well.

I love Joe as much as the next guy but I’d take 6 championships any day over 409 as I’m sure Joe would.

So what you are saying is that if a few dozen sports writers across the country thought Penn State was #1, making 1968, 69, 73, and 94 additional national title years, you’d be willing to look differently at Joe Paterno’s record?

I think what Saban has done at Alabama is amazing and due all the accolades he receives. However, I also think Joe’s 5 undefeated, untied seasons with Bowl wins is pretty darn awesome itself. And he had 3 of them with fewer scholarships than Alabama or Texas had to work with at the time.

No thrashing from me. I'm gentle.

Joe's prime was fading by '98. However, even if we had a playoff (BCS was basically the polls 1v2, with a computer average thrown in; still not quite the 4 team invitational we have now) during the BCS era, Joe would have gotten about 2 more opportunities ('05, '08).

Previous to '98, a playoff equals perhaps as many as 10-11 opportunities (including title games won and lost).

I never said I view Joe different without championships...things were political back in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s with college football.

I still think he’s the greatest college football coach based on more than wins.

My only point was the OP saying “it still won’t get him to 409”. I have a feeling Saban doesn’t care much about 409. He cares more about 6. My simple thought was I bet Joe would take 6 over 409.

I know this was a fight I was never gonna win but it’s late and I’ve taken worse beatings before.

Please understand...I’m 110% team joe.

I understand, and I don’t mean my remarks to incite a fight. I just truly believe that when national titles are based solely on opinions, rather than on on-field results, those titles are open to debate. Hence, if I were Supreme Ruler of Records, I would allow all schools who completed unbeaten AND untied seasons including a Bowl game to consider themselves National Champions.

Then Penn State and Joe would be recognized for 6 titles, not merely 2.

I don't think Joe would if it required him to sign 30+ recruits a year, let alone running about 10 kids off every year to make room for more.

Joe had five undefeated seasons including the bowl game. How many undefeated seasons for Saban?

Great question. I just checked and although my coffee has not kicked in yet, if I am reading this correctly, the ONLY undefeated season Saban had was 2009 at Alabama. That was over a head coaching career starting in 1990. Not too shabby when you consider the five one loss seasons in the eleven at Bama.
