How do we get this guy as coach?

Indiana is basically JMU - he took most of the team with him - see how he does when he has to recruit there.
That's a great point. Some of those JMU players he took to Indiana are seniors, so in other words they may not have even been good enough coming out of high school to play at an FBS school.

His politics has nothing to do with my statement that he’s a big donor to Indiana University.

He is in line behind Norvell. Who is behind Dino Babers. Let's see what he does for more than a few games. And yes, I know what he did at JMU, and IUP.

He recruited these talented kids to JMU but can’t recruit equal or better talent to Indiana? I don’t get it.

Where he had 3 seasons to develop them. I think the statement is more that he developed a solid core at JMU, a lot of these kids probably weren't even getting Indiana level offers, then brought them over.

The schedule ended up being rather favorable early (Washington is their toughest opponent, ranked 8th in the conference) and outside of OSU they won't face another team inside the top 8 of the conference.

One can give credit for what Cignetti has accomplished without falsely believing he's easily going to replicate it. They are winning impressively. That's about all they could do so far.

I think the fanbase is becoming manic at this point. Yeah Saturday sucked and was awful. But the answer does not exist in a coach who moved from JMU to Indiana who has yet to prove he has it at the elite level and who has relatively few years of coaching left at his age. It’s hard to win 9 or 10 games a year. It’s very easy to go 6-6. You do not move on from Franklin unless it is a 100% sure thing.

I think he’s the next Nick Saban. The Indiana turnaround may be the craziest turnaround I’ve ever seen.

I don’t think he’s at Indiana next year, he’s going to get major job offers this year. Sadly Franklin is here for at least one more year after this.
He brought 13 players and 6 coaches from James Madison. I don't know how much eligibility they have left or if they'll stay if he leaves.

Indiana hasn't played anybody either but they dominated 5-4 Nebraska and easily beat 5-4 Wisconsin. I doubt they'll beat OSU (ESPN gives them a 30% chance). Michigan only has a 13% chance of beating Indiana.

If we win out and OSU beats Indy we'll likely be seeded higher in the playoff. Indy is one of the few teams with a weaker schedule than PSU.

he brought almost his entire squad from a JMU team last year that was ranked and almost undefeated going into their last game of the season...solid Coach but also think he has had some things go his way as well ie transfers , Indiana schedule ( they don't play Oregon or Penn State)..they will lose to Ohio State..

Hogwash…then he will be here forever. Nothing in life is a 100% sure thing.

It’s time for someone else to get a chance.

A coach that can instill more discipline and toughness.

Everything out team desires is still in front of them. Just don't slip up now.

Cignetti has won for years. Franklin hasn’t made the playoff in 11 years. Cignetti is a million times the coach than Franklin will ever be. He’ll show you how to coach against Ohio State.
He has a very good record of success of coaching at the smaller college level. He reminds me of Jim tressel who was very successful at Youngstown State. Indiana versus Ohio state is going to be a real war. It is possible that Indiana's defensive backs will be overmatched against Ohio state's receivers, but the more likely game is a war and a close score.

Yeah I’m curious about the matchup. Think IU has a real shot.

I think he means as an actual coach. Not recruiting, etc…

Again, premature. Hyperbolic. You can't anoint someone better than Day because they are 9-0 in their first season. Turning IU around is impressive, but let's see something sustained.

Remember, Mel Tucker was the best coach in the conference during the '21 season before Sparty fell on their face in '22.

I think it’s pretty obvious Cignetti is a better coach than Franklin, that’s not really up for debate. But Day isn’t as bad as many say imo. He had a really smart game plan vs PSU.

So you’re not impressed with his coaching job?

One can be impressed with what Cignetti has accomplished at IU (best season in school history is excellent) AND understand that they have done it under much different circumstances (their toughest opponent is currently ranked 9th in the conference).

What Indiana/Cignetti have achieved is impressive but it's also a fluke of scheduling. They are 10 games into a season without playing anything close to a top 25 team. The decent programs they have played this year are all in the down part of the cycle.

Yesterday Indiana just barely got by a Michigan team that might be the worst Michigan team in 20 years. They also got to play Michigan State in a year when MSU is having a miserable season. For some reason they didn't have to play Iowa, Illinois or Wisconsin -- not great teams but physical teams that could give them trouble.

So I think some of the air will go out of the Indian balloon next week. Indiana have top 20 talent but they are a long way from top 10 and you'll see that demonstrated at the Shoe. If PSU could play Indiana in the playoff it would be a gift because they are ripe for the picking.

IUP was 4-10 in their conference the year before Cignetti got there. He he had a winning record every year he was there, made the playoffs 4 out of his 6 years, and won 2 conference championships.

Elon had 6 straight losing seasons before Cignetti got there. He took them to the playoffs both years he was there and won coach of the year.

JMU was a good team before Cignetti got there. He took them to the national championship game his first year and to the playoffs his first three years. 2022 and 2023 were JMU's first 2 years in FBS so they were not eligible for bowl games.

If he can get lowly Indiana to the playoffs in his first year, I don't care how old he is there are teams that will want him. Franklin isn't going anywhere so Cignetti to PSU talk is a waste of time.
Could have had him 10 years ago. Maybe you should have posted how great he was before it was obvious to everyone.

Ps. Fickel.was a coach of the year. How is he doing now?
