Cowboys weakside linebacker Sean Lee will miss 4-6 weeks with his latest hamstring injury, DavidMoore of the Dallas Morning News reports. The question now becomes: What is Lee’s future with the Cowboys?

Lee’s contract runs through 2019, with a $7 million base salary and a $10.1 million salary cap hit for next season. The Cowboys can save $7 million by cutting him before next season, and Lee would count only $3.075 million in dead money.

The Cowboys drafted linebacker Leighton Vander Esch in the first round.

Could Lee call it quits after this season?

Lee, 32, can’t stay on the field. He missed five games last season and already has missed three with a pulled left hamstring this season.

In his career, Lee has missed 45 of a possible 136 games. Thirteen of his missed games were because of hamstring issues, per Moore.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett acknowledged that “we anticipate [Lee] to be out for a little bit, no question about that,” but has never given a more definitive timetable.

I'd fake a hammy too if I had to play for that joke of an owner and franchise! ;)

they will cut him. they drafted a LB to take his place already this year. he isn't worth the money playing 50% of the games. listening the other night, Jason Whitten was really high on Lee and considering he was a teammate that meant something. Said he is one of the smartest players ever been around. Maybe Lee retires this year and JFF gives him a call and gives him a LB coaching spot. would be perfect.

Can't say it's time to hang it up. He's still legitimately the best player on that team when healthy.

Hate to say it, but might be time to hang it up.
He needs to get his coaching career started so he can coach LB at PSU within a few years.
while that sounds nice, I have a feeling his coaching career will be in the NFL and not a PSU. Mostly because if you have a chance at the NFL level, you take it, nobody ( well almost nobody) likes recruiting as an assistant football in college.

He was just on his weekly visit with Dallas Sports Radio show (KTCK). They were asking him about the silly Cowboy defense's TD celebration on the fumble return that was called back. His response was basically, "I guess I am old school having gone to Penn State and played for Coach Paterno, I am not really a celebration guy".

Very possible. Either way, I've thought he would be a good coach since he put the headphones on during his injured year at PSU.
Do you think he could get hired by an NFL team with no coaching experience? Or more likely to start at a small college?

I think it would be easier for him to go to the NFL right after playing if he wants to coach. Heck he might not get hired by any college right after playing, as you know, he doesnt have any coaching experience. Colleges seem to worry about that more than the NFL, plus the NFL has larger staffs. So would somebody like Mike Vrabel hire him? I think he would. Follow up, would he start at the top? Doubtful, but within a couple of years, I would guess he'd move up the ladder pretty quickly.

if say Scrap would be DC in Pittsburgh, he would hire him in a NY minute.

When healthy.....PSU or Dallas.....he’s ALWAYS been one of the very very best (easily top 5%) players to play that position.

A CLASS ACT IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE.

If he gets cut, I can almost guarantee he doesn't sign with the Saints now that Dez signed there today.

Cowboys LB Sean Lee fires back on Dez Bryant's 'snake' tweet

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee fired back at free agent receiver Dez Bryant on Friday after his former teammate called him a "snake" on Twitter while suggesting Lee played a role in the club's decision to release its career leader in touchdown catches.

The exchange was prompted by a radio station's tweet from an interview with executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones. He suggested that quarterback Dak Prescott felt pressure to get the ball to Bryant.

"First thing, to say that I can get anybody off the team and have any input on a roster is absurd," Lee said. "The second thing, I love Dez and I want the best for him.

"You know, to be honest, we did butt heads, because I wanted Dez to be more accountable to this team and his teammates. To be honest with you, a lot of the team felt that way. I think he needs to look at himself and hold himself accountable."

In an expletive-laden response to the radio station's tweet, Bryant criticized the team's play-calling. A second tweet suggested "my brother snake Lee I mean Sean Lee" and center Travis Frederick had a hand in the decision to release Bryant.

Frederick said it wasn't reasonable to think a fifth-year player, which he is, could wield influence on roster decisions.

"It's certainly disappointing," Frederick said. "It's disappointing when you hear guys turn against each other, but I think in the end Dez was a great teammate of mine and I'd still consider him a friend."

The radio station's original tweet didn't include all of Jones' quote, leaving out a portion that made a reference to tight end Jason Witten. The club's leader in catches and games retired after 15 seasons to go into broadcasting. The station sent a subsequent tweet with the portion about Witten.

"He's gotta trust the system, which at times last year, there was pressure, with Dez in his ear and to some degree Jason in his ear," Jones said in the radio interview. "Those great players want the ball."

Later, Jones said he didn't intend to criticize Bryant.

"You got great players like Dez and Witten, they want the ball," Jones said at Cowboys camp. "Everybody sees it. It's on every team. They let the quarterback know that sometimes. In no way was it intended to be negative."

Jones wouldn't discuss whether the front office solicited the opinions of players before releasing Bryant in April. Owner Jerry Jones said then, "We arrived at this crossroad collectively with input from several voices within the organization."

The owner's comments prompted a reply on twitter from Bryant, who wrote that was "something he already knew." In interviews later that day, Bryant suggested that team captains and "Garrett guys," in reference to coach Jason Garrett, played a role in his release.

After seeing reports of Lee's response Friday, Bryant wrote on Twitter, "he sat right across from me.. everything he said he could have addressed with me...sounds like a back stabber to me."

Bryant's release came after three sub-par seasons following the $70, five-year contract he signed after his only All-Pro season in 2014. Cleveland has shown interest in signing him in recent days.

Stephen Jones said he believes Bryant knows the Cowboys still have positive feelings for the three-time Pro Bowl player. Bryant's 73 touchdowns are two more than Hall of Famer Bob Hayes.

"Obviously these are tough times in terms how this has turned out," Stephen Jones said. "Dez is thinking about his future and certainly not easy on anybody. No one knows more about what I think of Dez than me."
