Ferrari commits to Iowa

I can tell you with certainty that no one gives a heck about where our wrestlers went to high school, like at all. Hell, we could have a lineup full of PA kids for all that matters.

I appreciate the joke there though. Got a hearty laugh out of that one.

I like the handle. As a youngster....my father never went anywhere. I'm being pretty literal too. Almost never got 5 miles from home. When I got my first real job....I got a Golden Eagle Pass and drove cross-country every summer for 3 years....hitting every National Park and National monument I could. Sleeping in my car and living on Honey and bread so my 200.00 would last as long as possible :). Year two I made it to the Oregon coast, down through California and back via Arizona , Utah and Colorado. The only park I missed was Glacier National :(. Years later my son wanted to do it....so 2 straight summers......off we went. Great memories. Hail to the National Parks :)
I envy your free spirit to do such a cool adventure for 3 straight years, all on honey, bread, and $200! Love how your son nudged you out to Glacier. Nothing like a father-son roadtrip through awesome country. Glacier’s one of our favorites for hiking, but just driving Going-to-the-Sun is astonishing enough. Working a summer in Yellowstone and straying a bit south to see the jagged Tetons hooked me on western mountains. Hail to NPs, indeed! Sorry for taking the thread briefly off-trail. We now return to our regular-scheduled programming.

One more. I’m at about 20 NPs now. Hit Isle Royale, Theodore Roosevelt, Wind Cave and Badlands last year; doing Haleakala, Kenai Fjords and Katmai this year. Long way to go to get all of them, but retirement is coming up

Lots of great parks in Arkansas if you ever make it out this way. I live next to the Bull Shoals/White River State Park, but Petit Jean, Pinnacle Mountain, and Mount Magazine have some gorgeous views from hiking trails. Hell, most of the state seems like a State Park!

Saw this before heading out the door. Funny you say that. My employer (Windstream) is based in Little Rock, and when they downsize/squeeze me out next year (my 66th on the planet), I plan to drive down from Pittsburgh to visit longtime colleagues I’ve rarely seen in person. I’ll now also research your suggestions and visit at least one of these spots in Razorback land. Thanks for the assignment (a good one). Hey, and after getting willfully snared by some of the foodie tangents taken on these threads, I don’t feel so bad with this bit of hiking talk. Lot of glorious country out there to enjoy, even as much as our favorite wrestling team.

Saw Ferrari won at LeMans… family is incredible. Three entered but only two finished at #1 and #4. AJ’s probably the one that couldn’t finish….

Thanks. To be clear....I have never made it to Glacier NP. 5 trips......Hit Yellowstone and Teton 5 times each... ..never got there. Still on my list. Second ...the honey and bread was only on my first trip.....and only when I ran out of the boxes of pre-packed food which ran out faster than I expected :). I had a bit more $ the next times. I also should give a shout out to Iowa. Particularly their corn. I would buy 1/2 dozen ears and they were so large that they got me through 6 meals when combined with the many cans of Underwood Devil's Chicken Spead that I packed pre-trip. The chicken spread was easy to heat in my trunk :). I haven't eaten it since. Do they even still make it? The memories keep flooding back :)

Petit Jean is about an hour NW of Little Rock. Some of the most beautiful views I've ever seen there. Worth the short drive.

Impressive, but have you ever been to Iceland? 😉
That’s very clever, sir. But what if there is a fire? I think violating fire codes and endangering the lives of children would be unwise at this juncture in your career, sir.

My daughter is on a NP push. She just turned 30 and we’ve been trying to hit one or two each quarter. When we go, we do as many hikes as possible and try to get 10-15 miles in a day. Joshua Tree was January. Bryce Cavern and Zion was mid May. My daughter pulled a permit for Angels Landing so we did it. Great hike. We were in the first bus and the first one to Scouts Landing where the ranger was. Avoided the crowd as much as we could on the Angels route by being early. By 10, it was a zoo up there. Son and daughter in law live in SLC so October it hitting the other three Utah NPs. Next summer is a hope to hit the 5 Alaska NPs. Lots of fun

I’m at 46 of the NPs. Love visiting them!

Before I start counting, I want to make sure I have the proper definitions set. By "national park", do you mean anything in the NP system like national seashores/lakeshores and monuments? (many NMs are under the BLM but quite a few are also under the NPS) Or do you mean just literally "parks"?

I got Allegheny Portage Railroad about 3 miles from me. It's not bad but not a whole lot to see. Some decent Rail to Trail type hiking close by.

And there is a rumor of free beer and various other drinks if you can find my house. :) I don't believe everything I read on the internet though. :)

Glad to have opened the floodgates. They're some great, comical memories. Save Glacier for a September trip, after crazy summer crowds and permit hassles. If you haven't already seen grizzlies in Yellowstone and the Tetons, I'll bet you see one here. That's where my avatar comes from. By the way, Underwood lives on!

Do it. It won’t answer. Do you care that Nickal was from Texas? Rby from Arizona? So on and so forth…why the heck would you. It’s a ridiculous theory to expect Iowa fans to not root for certain wrestlers repping our singlet because of where they came from. It’s absurd to think that Iowa fans care. Truly it is. That’s why I laughed.

If psu had a talented wrestler from Japan that performed well and represented the university as well as could be expected, would you not root for his success as much as the guy born in say Pittsburgh.

I root for all wrestlers wearing an Iowa singlet. I like some more than others, but the determining factor isn’t where they are from. That’s not bs buddy. I don’t know how much more simple I can make this. Lincoln Mac, the Williams brothers, metcalf, Lee. All great wrestlers, all fan favorites. None of them from Iowa.

You don’t like me because you’re stuck in tribal thinking. So everything I say is crap to you or bs. Imo you come across as a simple minded 6 yr old throwing a tantrum. So I will treat you as such and ignore you until you can calm down.

Happy to oblige. I’ve always felt underappreciated as a comic. Good to know your thoughts on a lineup flush with PA champs. TB certainly hasn’t won anything since 2010 without them. It may prove a sounder strategy than throwing all that NIL cash at one very odd, attention-seeking family.
I agree that recruiting quality wrestlers is a better strategy then trying to buy smaller schools successful projects, or washouts from other schools. I want Iowa to win, so yeah I’d rather have a quality wrestler for 4 yrs plus a possible redshirt yr over the one or two year stop gaps they’ve been trying to get this year.

It’s a jab, Penn state is in Pa. You take sone of this stuff way to seriously .

🤔

What if he ends up becoming one of Pittsburgh’s premier HS Coaches, and helps produce national champs for Penn State?

Sounds like an ideal scenario for Penn St. Also, context would tell me that this has already occurred. If it has, I’m sure you’re happy about that.

This is the same way I’d feel about a PA high school wrestler going to Iowa. Becoming a premier HS coach in Iowa City and producing national champs for Iowa.

To suggest that Iowa fans care where their wrestlers went to high school is silly. I said as much, and got told it was BS by @District four, Which is hysterical. You guys are a solid time! Interacting with you all can be fun. Heck @bourbon n blues constantly misreads me and thinks I need to take things less seriously. Which was basically the entire point I was trying to make to begin with.

Never change y’all. Haha

You crack me up. I haven’t taken any of this seriously because saying Iowa fans care where their wrestlers went to high school isn’t worthy of serious conversation. Nor should it be. Once they wear black and gold their high school titles don’t matter anymore.

However I do think D-4 responds like a petulant child when interacting with Iowa fans. So, that said, I stand by comments about him.

This year?
Lugo and Woods previously.

PSU has brought transfers in, but the core has been elite and other than Andrew Long the transfers have contributed very little to the team's efforts.

Iowa it appears to be me is trying to build something elite through the portal.

Max Dean? He won a title as a transfer. Lugo and Woods wrestled or will wrestle as many years as he did. I believe they all had two years of eligibility left at the time of transfer. Going on memory here.

There is nothing wrong with supplementing a lineup via the transfer market. It’s damn near a requirement based on how often kids leave schools.

My overarching point (not just the two words you focused on) is that it’s generally better to build through recruiting rather then get in bidding words for plugs in a lineup.

Bourbon’s right. Mine was a petty jab, only taken because of the delicious irony of Iowa’s last crown being entirely due to HS champs from the same state as its bitter college rival. Laugh it off. Because you’re right, too. No collegiate fan cares what state their athletes attended HS, and, yes, PSU’s recent dominance certainly hasn’t only come from in-state athletes. Save your real heat for when your bouncer lets me into GIA and I start jabbing over there. I may need Zain’s head wrap from Final X before too long.

Well, if I’m honest, I think you got a winner in Angelo, perhaps even for the full 4 years. Maybe it’ll even be worth Iowa’s program prostrating itself at one family’s feet. Just not a good look. And don’t start me on the scum that undeniably nearly killed a woman over nothing but narcissistic bravado. That’s a “washout from another school” no self-respecting Iowan should want to reward.

Wasn't Kirk a transfer also? And if you don't think Messenbrink isn't going to contribute, then you either haven't seen him wrestle or you know nothing about wrestling. :)
Of course, Max Dean contributed also.

I always miss Dean as a transfer. Dean wasn't filling a hole he replaced a returning AA.

Without the three portal imports this year, PSU is still the heavy favorites next March.

You and I are probably saying the same thing, kind of.

Penn State's recruiting and development is way ahead of the Hawks. The Hawks are looking to improve a solid lineup with an elite transfer or two. While PSU is starting with an elite lineup and adding to it with solid or elite (this year especially) transfers.

Well, if I’m honest,

Yep, fan bases bust balls a little and I've seen the Pa. - Iowa high school wrestling talk go back and forth. Of course everyone wants the best recruits and of course Pa. is a hot bed of talent. Doesn't mean all of the best recruits are in Pa. just a large amount.

It's just having fun.
