Flo has zero love for Verk

Am I the only one that thinks Jarod can low AA in a weight class full of fresh blood?

IMHO Verk will be R16 or better. However, from a ranking standpoint has he wrestled and beaten anyone that Flo has ranked? I don't think he has and if so, I don't see the argument for ranking him as of now. Not that preseason rankings (or any rankings for that matter) actually matter since everything is decided on the mat.

I think Verk will be very good. However he has to prove it before publications will print it. He split time last year and had a couple head scratchers and didn’t participate in the post season.

He’s good and no publication has to say he is for him to prove it, either.

I agree with what has already been posted. I think Verk has a lot of talent, but has yet to prove it. Last year he was 11-6 and his best results were close losses to good wrestlers: 10-8 to Jordan (his best match of the year IMO, almost won that thing!), 3-2 to Gfeller and 3-2 to Berge. He needs to get some wins over good, ranked guys to be in the discussion. I have good hopes for him this year, and wouldn't be surprised to see him have a significant bump in his wrestling!

I know people might not like this comparison but does Verk remind anybody of Jimmy Gulibon? I remembered that Jimmy could beat anybody because he's so amazing on his feet but he was a headcase sometimes and lost to a lot of inferior wrestlers

That being said, Verk has 2 bad losses only. One to Smaller Amine when he made a huge cut the day of and just gassed. The other to the App State guy when he just got taken down and just gave up.

The rest of his losses were close losses to good wrestlers (Berge, Micah, Artalona, Gfeller)

Unfortunately, close losses get a little too overvalued at times - especially close losses to teammates.

That said, I think he’ll be solid. Knowing he’s the starter should help a lot.

It's kind of tough when his most impressive matches were losses to really good guys. I definitely think he can surprise some people this year and knowing the spot is his, without any unexpected sharp cutting weight, will help him, I'm guessing.

I'm with you, no moral victories in wrestling, especially with the Penn State style of wrestling. He's close but he has to get over the hump. A lot of wrestlers spend their career being "there but not over the hump"

... He's close but he has to get over the hump ...

Jimmy may have lacked confidence at times. Verk seems to have an abundance of confidence and maybe will need to dial that back just a touch in big matches (high risk moves against highest level opponents).

Jimmy G didn’t wrestle at his ideal weight some and struggled to finish shots, small hands? Verk needs to take more shots and find opportunities to create, he does have that late duck to hit late when down by 1 ;-)

I am with the collective on the fact that he still needs some ranked wins, but to be left off the top 20 with close matches to several ranked dudes especially including the Jordan match where he got jobbed. Watch that one again with an eye on his feet especially. They were literally dragging (Piles & Co missed that observation) as Jordon fled the mat and Verk got the penalty. In any case if he were in the teens somewhere I might understand, but out of the top 20? There are other kids in the top 20 with pretty short resumes.

Agree. My thinking is that it can't hurt to start the season with a chip on your shoulder if you feel you're being underestimated.

It’s not where you start...(fill in the rest).

Took a peek, and very little early season will help his ranking much. Just keep winning.

Maruca on Nov. 22 looks like the best test, and it’s a good one. Hostile environment after a long trip.

Can pipher make that weight I think that kid has potential as well

There's zero disrespect too, to flip the OP's words. Generally, one gets what they earn in this sport. And honestly, if a PSU guy wants to know how good he is, asking Cody is FAR better than any ranking.
I have to agree. His work so far doesn’t suggest a ranking but so what? And one point losses really are losses. If you lost to Mark Hall by one....you would just join a long list of wrestlers who have managed to do that.

I am rather jazzed to see him and Brady with full seasons....

2 things, Verk was the ultimate team player making weight for the Michigan dual when he thought Berge was going to start and Berge had no shot at 149 that day.

Second expect a wrestler closer to the end of the season Verk vs the early season Verk, Chances are he’s a healthy and strong 149 this year who has a shot to podium if he stays healthy.

Also, he’s familiar with Maruca iirc as both have spent time at YG.
