Flo on DeSanto ... coming Wednesday!

I saw DeSanto wrestle a couple of dozen matches in high school. I always thought that he wrestled like a crazed chimpanzee, but his style evolved by the time he was a Senior.

At states when he was a sophomore, DeSanto was called for two consecutive defensive pins. How often does that happen? I'm here to tell you that the first pin, against Brown of Franklin Regional was a major ref mistake. First he gave Brown a stalling point with a few seconds left in regulation to force OT. Stalling on Austin DeSanto? Get serious. Brown was returning state champ and the ref was giving him another chance to win, simple as that. Then in OT, DeSanto pulled one of his weird takedowns (he wasn't that into the dumps then). 90% of refs would have awarded DeSanto the takedown and the win. But this ref refused to call it, and then gave Brown the defensive pin. I don't think one person in the crowd agreed with either ref call.

DeSanto was better as a Junior, and waltzed to the finals, only to be hammered by Spencer Lee. No one was surprised.

But in his Senior year, DeSanto appeared to be stronger. And he had fully developed his philosophy of keeping up a manic pace. His additional strength allowed him to fight off Lee's offense better, and his pace gassed Lee out in the 3rd. It was obvious that Lee was just hanging on in the end.

As everyone said, cred goes to both wrestlers, DeSanto for his Vision Quest, Lee for his willingness to put it all on the line in light of his injuries. The result was an all-time classic bout. Who could ask for more? And why do people feel the need to second guess the results? It is what it is. Live with it.

Was a great match and 1/2 second on the clock the other way, changes the outcome. Not sure if SLs leg was an issue or the non-stop motor on DeSanto wore him out.. Amazing 3rd per by DeSanto. enhanced by the fact he did it against a Pa true HS legendary wrestler

You got that right. People were already having the Spencer Lee vs Cary Kolat argument: who was PA's goat? And who didn't admire DeSanto's quest? That was the talk of the message boards for the two months leading up to states. By the time of the finals, you could cut the anticipation with a knife.

I can only remember one final that was as anticipated, that was Donnie Jones vs. Joey Ecklof, two 2x returning state champs. And everyone thought that Jones was going to be an easy winner. I had seats on the 50 yard line that night.

For anyone interested, here's a link:

Thanks dunkej01 for posting the Vision Quest video. A very enjoyable watch!

IIRC the pin was also an extraordinarily fast call. Was a stack, so easy to see that DeSanto's shoulders were not on the mat for anywhere near 2 sec if at all.

To be generous to the ref, he called a freestyle touch fall in a HS folk match.

The kid was wrestling with a torn ACL...c'mon. I'm convinced if Lee is healthy, he wins that match and handily. I think DeSanto closed the gap, but not that much.
I was there watching the match and cheering loudly for Austin because I wanted to send Spencer to Iowa with that DeSanto cheer ringing in his ears
A great match between 2 great wrestlers

Uh oh--you're giving fuel to the Iowa fans who said the loud cheering after DeSanto's win was a cheer against Iowa. I'm sure a few were--but I suspect that most fans appreciated the phenomenal effort/upset they had just seen.

They really should be embarrassed by that thread. The sulking over the timing is particularly ridiculous. Do they actually think this video will affect Spencer Lee at BigTens in any way??

If Flo really wants to stick it to them, they should come out with Vision Quest II, The Ronnie Bresser story right before nationals.

Come on guys only one guy started a thread about it and it was vodka ...Also most of the guys who replied to it disagreed with him..
Was a great story and great job done by both wrestlers.
They both showed great sportsmanship after the match. I believe Lee was even in Austins corner at the dapper dan.
They will both have great results in college and maybe international...

Those Jones' boys were tough. Both of my brother's wrestled Greg Jones. My older brother lost to him in high school. In OT. On a stall point.

I never had the privilege of getting smacked around by Greg Jones. Instead I had the privilege of getting smacked around by another Greensburg Salem stud named Billy Smith.

Vodka needs to hide the vodka for awhile.

Vodka: "Riddle me this (I DEMAND an answer!!): Does the video get made if Spencer wins?"

Hello??? Would the movie Vision Quest ever be made with Brian Shute winning? "Austin Desanto's Vision Quest". Get it?
The guy is a complete lunatic.

If Cael Sanderson didn't win 4 NCAA titles and an Olympic gold would he even be the head coach at PSU? I don't know why people are so interested in Cael Sanderson. If it weren't for his success he'd be a nobody.

Given the way Flo sometimes slobbers over that has been program, I’m surprised there hasn’t been a Sammy Brooks doc yet.

I just read through the HR thread. The amount of narcissism over there is crazy. According to the sentiments on HR, the documentary should have been titled "UNFAIR: How a devastating injury cost the greatest high school wrestler of all time a championship: The Spencer Lee ACL Story."

They are so conceited that they have no idea that an entire world outside of Iowa wrestling exists, and that Flo does not exist to tell every story from the Iowa point of view.

We Pa natives know the PA High School GOAT is Kolat. Full stop.

Actually, you're onto something ... some other doc ideas:

Pat Downey, The Immaculate Transfer
Green Sweaters and Ham, Sam Brooks I Am
Fit To Be Tied -- a tale of restored Big Ten glory
She Loves My Big Three Inch ... Binder of Her Favorite Recruits
Gassed Him From Bottom
Topher: Don't Call Me Chris
The Stare
Herky Boys: the Compliance Office crank calls

I really enjoyed the doc, and really enjoy watching both young men do their thing.

Was Vodkas issue about legal stalling, or just something more stupid?

I haven't seen the thread, but my guess is the drunken goof may have started it, but more than he participated in a collective whine.

Something much more stupid:
"if they're going to have Desanto beating Lee in high school the highlight/focus of this video, they better at least point out the massive asterisk that Lee was wrestling with a torn ACL, hadn't practiced for a month, and had surgery following the tournament." (Yeah, right, as if you can have a video about overcoming a great challenge, while saying Whoops, not such a big challenge after all.)

Also he titled thread "Anyone else think the flo Desanto - Lee video is a really dumb idea?"

And, yes, many posts agreeing with him. Some pushback but more agreeing than not.

Then a bunch more questioned the timing of the video -- God knows why, Spencer Lee apparently both has laser focus and is easily distracted by an online video about somebody else.

This was also known as "Wednesday" over there.

Want to really watch HR heads explode?

@smalls103, please please please make the next documentary about Robles.

Then let's do a compare/contrast of HR complaining about the DeSanto video (Flo didn't say Lee lost because he wrestled on one leg) and the Robles video (Flo didn't say McDonough lost because Robles wrestled on one leg).

WIllie would get the Jammen Lifetime Troll Achievement Award for that.

He's right, it would not go over well at all. The threads about Robles after he beat McDougal definitely had the same type of bitterness.

I can think of lots of videos Flo should do:

"The Day Caldwell took down Metcalf"
"Throw Me! Terry Brand Part 2"
"NCAA Robbery: PD2 and PD3 Speak about Iowa Grad School"
