One of those kids I wanted in Blue and White. Seemed like the prototype LBU mold but now out for season..again. Shoulder this time after knee tear last year. His brother quit team. Just not going right in Motown. Smart kid.. engineering I believe. Could still transfer to PSU and have 2 years.

Thanks for posting. I remember him. Sad story and a real good example of why they need to be 4 year scholarships. We cannot start paying players, however. This isn't minor league football. It is college football and less than 5% of the P5 players ever get into an NFL training camp.

I have never done research but would guess that those who whine loudest about paying players also whine just as loudly about student debt. I would be retired today if I didn't have to pay off my college loans in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Today the cost is so much higher. A scholarship is a huge financial benefit IF it is used correctly. END of RANT!

Wasn't the Ferns's dad's plan to have his two boys play for the same team? Too bad it didn't work out. Didn't Brendan want to major in an engineering major not available at most colleges? Something about geology, maybe? I forget, except that PSU and WVU both offer the major.

If I remember correctly he wanted to major in PNG - Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. It's not offered everywhere - PSU, WVU, some Texas schools, etc. I think PSU and WVU might be the only schools to offer it in this part of the country.

This post deserves more than just a like. Thank you Ziggy for summarizing my thoughts better than I could!

OT: I saw the obituary for your Dad on the old home site. Very nice. I know that you and yours will miss him. Hope that you are well. I'm heading down home tomorrow. Take care.

He was a recruit that never visited PSU. Supposedly PSU was in top 2, but despite numerous trips to Morgantown he never made it up to University Park.

His last visit to PSU I think got cancelled due to a snow storm?

He was known as an excellent student. Sure the school will find some type of ship for him if injuries have derailed his career

I don't understand the logic of surmising that CJF would be interested in accepting transfers of former recruits that have not had success in other programs. If Ferns has shown talent in the practices he has participated in at WVU, WVU will be doing everything to get him healthy and on the field. Meanwhile CJF has recruiting a talented group of LB's that are developing in his system and under the tutelage of his coaching staff. I believe the roster that CJF has assembled and is being complemented each year by progressively more talented recruiting classes is beyond having the need for injury riddled transfer players.

Thanks MICH. He will be missed. There just wasn't any wax left on the candle.

Enjoy ALF. Weather should be good.

PS - Your Brother's restaurant is my favorite. ;)

Thanks, I'll let him know. His steak au poivre is killer. It will be a busy weekend with ALF, so if you plan to have dinner there, I'd suggest making a reservation soon.

You don't buy damaged goods at the store: you don't offer a scholarship to PSU for a damaged body.

We went in late June. Not even trying this week. He has always been a gracious host to my dad, and our family. The Ketners.

I actually thought the power five conferences for football and basketball were made to give full four year scholarships a few years ago.

Motown?

I have to ask. What is ALF if you don't mind?

MICH and I are both originally from the hinterlands..... Clarion County, PA. ALF is an acronym for Autumn Leaf Festival, one of the larger annual festivals in that part of the state. It culmiinates with the "Tournament of Leaves" parade, and the homecoming football game for Clarion U.

It's pretty much your typical weeklong small town festival - classic car show, food, carnival rides, etc. The parade is usually one of the bigger ones in the state. I once saw the Blue Band appear in it, but that's a rare occurrence.

That sounds great. I've wanted to visit some of the obscure towns in northern PA.

Ferns? He made multiple visits to State College.

I don't think so. I think the snowstorm story is correct and Ferns never visited. IIRC, Ferns had planned to visit SC a few times before the snowstorm but something always came up. Anyway, he's at WVU and that's the end of it.

You're right that he had unofficial visits. It was his official visit that kept on getting delayed, cancelled, etc. Just seemed like there was always some excuse. Doesn't matter much as he seemed set on WVU.

Morgantown has always been called Motown by the locals down here.I guess Detroit is Motown ll.

He made multiple visits. Met with the Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (to which PNG is a part of). He kept cancelling visits on big recruiting weekends (one time due to a snow storm that never happened). All of his visits were of the one-on-one personal variety and the staff kept pushing him to come up when all of the recruits take their officials so he could hang with the class...but he never made those trips.

Yes, agreed. But he made multiple visits which is not "never visiting State College". His brother was a major factor, which I get, and now he's not even playing. Shame.

How obscure? My personal favorites are Wellsboro, Coudersport, Shinglehouse, and Montrose. Just get your ass on Rt. 6 and enjoy. Almost anything between I-80 and the New York border is awesome.

Extend your trip up I-15 into the Finger Lakes for extra enjoyment, but specificities for that excursion are for another thread.

Ferns? That would not be a transfer but a transplant.:)

Which tells me that WVU was his #1 choice and he didn't want the class in his ear trying to convince him otherwise.

You guess wrong, obviously.
Given Detroit's rate of decline, and Morgantown's growth, there is a point in the future at which the WV city will have more people, so Detroit will be Motown II. :)

Stand corrected:).

It looks like the name Motown was coined and established by Berry Gordy in 1960 to describe Detroit. I don't know but I'd guess that Morgantowners borrowed Motown from Gordy.

He seems like a nice kid and is smart, but the idea that he is a good candidate to transfer here is a little weird. He can't stay healthy and in his only two years of CFB he's has two season ending injuries. If he wants to transfer to PSU as a student nobody can stop him, but as far as a transfer into the program? No thanks.

Dem you are right about the growth of Morgantown. It's growing in every direction except North.I guess the Mason-Dixon line has something to do with this.Ferns will probably not play again this year.He was second team middle linebacker and special team player. He was special team mvp for the Del St game.
