Franklin among favorites for USC job, per BetOnline Sportsbook

USC just beat a Top 10 team and they want to fire Helton and hire Franklin …… makes perfect sense to me. :)

Bill O’Brien used PSU as a steppingstone.

EVERYTHING that CJF has said from day one has indicated that PSU is his dream job. If he were to move on to Southern Cal, he’d never have ANY credibility for anything he ever said for the rest of his life.

Personally, I can’t see that move ever happening because of his family. But, at the same time, he and I have never discussed it during his visits to Chicagoland.

Couldn’t agree more. Just don’t see CJF voluntarily leaving PSU.

Franklin to usc, nardoozie to Penn State, urban to pitt.
Talk radio today had Matt Campbell going to Penn State. They didn’t really mention where Franklin was going, but they felt Campbell’s best fit would be Penn State or Michigan and Michigan isn’t likely going to get rid of Harbaugh, so that leaves Penn State.

Reality check. No father would move his two girls the the rat infested of Los Angeles and surrounding environs. Even if the paid him 25% more, state income tax would take 12%, His house would cost 100+% more, His property taxes would be 3-590% more. This thread is a joke. The schools are also a disaster.

I know we're all clowning around here, but Matt Ruhl would make more sense in my opinion. Whether or not we have the Texas sized bank account to yank him away from Chip and Joanna country remains to be seen.
Love Rhule....hard nosed, fiery and a PSU guy. If he can have a modicum of success at a garbage and stained program like Baylor, following success at Temple, his resume would speak for itself.

Yeah and all that sunshine 365 per is such a beeoch. Also, that Brentwood about 10 miles away is a terrible place to live ... after all O.J. lived there.....;)

I’ve never heard of Matt Campbell.

I'll be at the ISU vs. Baylor game this weekend. I'll see if I can get a magic number from Rhule. :D
I would suspect he has an “out clause” (with realistic monetary considerations) that if PSU called, Baylor would be in a bind. His first two years there was pretty remarkable with what he was left with. All coaches that have leverage have stipulated “out” clauses and they are usually governed by the buyout.

USC won't hire someone from Pennsylvania. He won't even be a finalist.

It just makes no sense. They'll first try for Urban Meyer and then someone from the West Coast.

That article is clickbait.

"Odds for USC’s coach in 2020 if it’s not Clay Helton via @betonline_aghttps://t.co/yfJOw35WnU

Urban Meyer 1.5/1
Chris Petersen 3/1
James Franklin 3.5/1
David Shaw 7/1
Mike Gundy 7/1
Kliff Kingsbury 12/1

— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) September 23, 2019"

Urban isn't coming out of coaching retirement. He's got the perfect low-stress situation in Columbus, considering his brain problem. Realistic odds - 6500/1.

Chris Peterson isn't leaving Washington. He could have left Boise St. multiple times for better schools. He is not Lane Kiffin. Realistic odds - 100/1

Franklin isn't leaving PSU. His name being included is ridiculous. He'll be making $6.3 million in 2022, coaching at his dream job in his home state. Realistic odds - 4000/1

David Shaw is the only person on the list that even seems remotely reasonable. He is making around $5.5 million a year at Stanford and USC is paying Helton $3.8 million. USC would have to poney up to get him, but he might be interested in seeing what he could do with the increased recruiting pool at USC vice Stanford. Realistic odds - 10/1

Mike Gundy is making $5 million a year in his home state at Oklahoma St, where he played CFB. He also doesn't have any ties to California. Realistic odds - 100/1

Kingsbury will get at least 3 years in the NFL. If he pulls a Saban with the Cardinals, he'll be back in CFB for sure, but it certainly won't be next year. Realistic odds - 1000/1

I would put the current Boise St. HC, Bryan Harsin, at the top of the odds list. If Boise St. runs the table this year, and that seems very possible, he will be at the top of every AD's coaching search list. Odds - 2/1

USC might even want to call a mulligan with Ed Orgeron, after seeing what he is doing at LSU this year. Odds - 5/1

Well you sure as hell better remember the new QB for the Giants from his college days or you're not a true college football fan

Yes! I'm still smarting from the keyboard lashing I got from many for not being better versed in all things Duke football.

Did anyone see the article entitled "James Franklin a Favorite to re-land PSU Job - Top Coach Could Remain in Place"?

...alas, perhaps they deleted it when it was not generating enough clicks. :(

Gheez, why no mention of Joe Morehead?? I read these boards, and from what I understand from about 1/2 the posters here is that ALL of the credit for PSU's success over the last few years goes to Joe Morehead. It was ALL Joe Morehead's Offense. he is the creator of the modern day offense. And James Franklin is so stupid and bad, that without Joe Morehead, Franklin can barely brush his own teeth and tie his own shoes...... So why wouldn't Joe Morehead be a target over Franklin ????

If he's being truthful that he's at his dream job, then yes I do.

Therein lies the rub. I obviously cannot say what Franklin is thinking or whether anything for him has changed, but time and money have a way of changing one's perspective. In 2014, I fully believe he was truthful when he said Penn State was his dream job. Is it still? I don't know. When did he last make such a comment? It's not something I would expect him to talk about regularly. He's at Penn State and he's doing his job right now. That's all I know.

Forgetting click-bait articles, I am curious whether Franklin is as enamored with Penn State now as in 2014. In 2014, he had just come to Penn State, which is a major promotion over Vanderbilt. And he is a Pennsylvanian. However, now he's been on campus for five years. Without trying to incite ART. or BARRY. , that's five years around the university administration. We know he's been pushing for investments in the program. He's gotten some commitments, but not everything I'm sure he wants. How does he feel about that? Also, being at Penn State is no longer new. Is he antsy?

Again, I don't pretend to know what Franklin is thinking, but it is fair to question whether anything has changed in his mind in five years.

Didn't he say he's not going anywhere when this exact same thing came up last year? Of course he can use it to get he and his assistants paid.

Actually that’s a pretty honest assessment of the situation.

I believe he did. Franklin to me is honest, but again, things can change. Maybe he one day will see an opportunity to get paid elsewhere at a place he feels is more committed to the program financially. Maybe he will see a place with better leadership than Penn State (hard to imagine  ). No one really knows.

You gotta hope he likes it here because it seems like a good fit, but anything is possible in this day and age. Money and power talk. Ohio State is a hard hump to get over in the Big 10, and Alabama would be in the SEC. But the Pac 10 is wide open, and USC is still a top job.

Was just in Knoxville for a couple of days, and one UT fan I spoke with indicated a growing dissatisfaction with Jeremy Pruitt (imagine that) and that CJF would be a favorite for some in the fan base.

Not saying it would happen, just relaying what some fans are thinking.
"I'm a Vanderbilt guy with a Tennessee heart."

Best College Football Head Coaching Jobs IMO:

1. Texas
2. Alabama
3. Notre Dame
4. Ohio State
5. Penn State/Wisconsin

Iowa should be somewhere in the Top Ten - they've overpaid for under performing Ferentz for decades. UCLA and USC should be there, but UCLA isn't committed to football and USC has no leadership. Both are places that should clean up.on the field but can't get their sh*t together.

"Garbage Pay" for assistant coaches?

Right? Who would be worth overpaying to keep? Gattis? Moorhead? Shoop? Sorry - every assistant is looking to move on; you find guys who can do the job for a few years if you're lucky and get some lifers if they're not looking for a HC gig. More important and better ways to spend money.

I didn't make this up --> CLICK

Well, it's the PAC12, so there's no need to play any defense whatsoever....

The “ sell” for any Coach will be what kind of investment the school would be putting into the facilities as well as what type of payroll available for a new Coach to hire any assistant they want...

Doubt Franklin leaves in the near future however... if Penn State is unwilling to open the bank like other top schools ie Alabama , Ohio State , Michigan etc..Then I think the Head coaching job at Penn State will always be a stepping stone..
