Franklin and Penn State

Me too.....but watch the shit show unfold here should PSU lose a game. We have accountants, IT professionals, engineers, lawyers, plumbers and electricians....not to mention sanitary engineers, who all know more than our coaches....they've just chosen other careers!

I could have been head coach of a blueblood college football program, but I chose not to.

You have comprehension problems.

I never said he won’t be back.

Should he be back? I think losing today and against tOSU, and a dismal record against the three in his first six years, certainly allows the question to be raised going into next year. He gets put on the stove for sure if there is no improvement in the next year.

That’s why this is a big game. It buys him time, whether you think so or not.
Its an important game in the season. Guys like you almost make me root against PSU.....He will only be on your stove LOL.

Compete against tOSU and Michigan on a regular basis and have winning records most years against the three B1G East opponents is the yardstick in my mind. Do that and you are ok.

Don’t do that, finish 3rd or worse in the East most years and never appear in the BCS - unacceptable.
BCS....I guess he's screwed then. That will never happen.

We've competed better against OSU than anyone else since Franklin arrived. We need to close out some games against them but they are one of the best programs in the country. Gonna be very hard to beat them consistently.

Is Franklin on the hot seat?

No, but lose to MSU and tOSU, miss the BCS, finish third or worse in the B1G East, going into next year he will have much to prove.

A win today gives him a year of protection.

A loss and he’s up against it next year.

Agreed.
Only four teams of about 65 P5 teams qualify for the playoffs.....Only a fool would make that requirement of a coach. Considering there is a good argument that PSU should have or could have been there in 16 and came close again in 17.....I think about 50-60 other P5 schools would take that resume.

More reason he has to come up with wins against Michigan, a program questioning itself, and MSU a program no longer posting 10 win seasons.

There is no BCS.....and only 4 teams make the playoffs. Hold your breath waiting for PSU to "consistently" be in the 4.
I'm sure Coach Franklin is hoping to win today so he has "a year of protection."
LOL

Nobody is posting that he had to go to the BCS every year.

Franklin knows better than anyone a win today is IMPORTANT to him and the program.

If you want to think otherwise you are blinding yourself to reality.

Just like Harbaugh can post ten win seasons, post great winning percentages, etc. if he fails to beat tOSU he has failed that year.

If our coach beats the likes of Indiana and Maryland, but fails against the three, he has failed that year.

Don’t like that opinion? Fine.

Every game is "important." You play to win the game. LOL
I'll retire from this and allow you to decide when Coach Franklin is a "failure."

Who the hell is Jeff Johnson? I'd take Franklin over any coach in the country.
If there was a position of GM in college football, that is where I would rank Franklin high. Game day coach?? Eh, you got a lot a convincing to do.

Using MSU as your metric is bad faith cherry-picking.

Huh?

My metrics, as clearly posted-

More often than not winning years against the three, check that one off with a win today.

Compete for a B1G championship, again check off with a win today.

Challenge for the playoff, ditto check off with a win today.

Lose today? Without a win at tOSU none of those things happen.

Why "the three"?
Can you really explain elevating MSU's importance other than the fact that Franklin has done poorly against them? Would this concept have ever entered your mind before the year 2017?
How many wins against MSU would it take before your meaningful metric suddenly became "the two"?

We are 1-4 vs MSU same as Michigan and OSU. When we start beating them more often than OSU and Michigan the metric becomes “the two”.

You asked my metrics. I give them to you.

My reasoning? MSU and tOSU have been the dominant teams in the B1G East over the last decade. Michigan is Michigan. They are our primary opponents for an East title, a trip to Indianapolis, and a playoff opportunity.

You can toss Maryland and Rutgers in there, but why would you? They are road bumps.

Not if he loses against the three.

This is a big game for him.

It is a big game for him and team because they have goals. The fact that it is a big game has nothing to do with the fact that fans like you feel it puts him on hot seat if he loses.

He could go 9-3 for next 5 seasons and he still would not be on the hot seat. We all want the team to win every game, win B1G, win natty’s but the reality is it is tough to do.

For you to say what he is doing is not enough is ignorant. Has he and the team blown some games? Absolutely, and it is frustrating as heck. However his seat is cool and remains cool even if he loses to MSU and OSU.

it never ends with this crap. It would take multiple losing records for his seat to even get warm

Your opinion, not mine and many others.

If being another Texas A&M is good enough for you, and by that I mean a winning program that produces good players, but is basically a resume builder for the best programs that compete for the playoffs, that’s ok. You are not an unworthy fan.

I don’t ghink a loss today puts Franklin on the hot seat, but lose today and against tOSU, and repeat losing records against the three next year? Yes, the burner is on.

For some, lose today and against tOSU and they would volunteer to drive Franklin to the airport for his USC interview.

Elite fans deserve better. Who is that?

I'm personally ecstatic to be competing for B1G titles every year with a small chance of lucking into the playoffs. I do think it gets even better from here, but I'm content if it doesn't.
Too many take winning at this level for granted. I personally don't think it would take much for this program to start looking like Nebraska. Franklin is as good as it gets.

If you think 10-2 this year and 9-3 next year would get JF on hot seat you are clueless. You may want that but it’s not reality. Fans like you either forget or don’t care that Franklin requires academics and community service. He is an amazing fit for PSU and isn’t going anywhere

Wonder where the elite PSU fanboys would have landed if the NCAA and the BOT had succeeded?

Nope. While I agree with your "metrics", agree with Whirly re job security. Franklin could go 9-3, 8-4 indefinitely and retain his job at PSU

Wow, Holy F, Dave, you must be just North of the Mason Delusional Line. It seems to me, nearly impossible that the Powers to be of this institution were even capable of hiring an Individual, Coach, or Man of this quality. It is near impossible to accept this. Coach James Franklin honors Joe and his principles as if Paterno was his Mentor. I for one support his presence at my alma mater, for now and as long as he honors the pledge of, Success with Honor.

I wrote nothing negative about his coaching, his PR ability, or his personal hygiene.

If he does not produce I want him gone. I gave you my metrics. I think many will think mine our too tolerant in judging success.

Lose against MSU and tOSU and the tolerance level is very low next year.

Win today and he gets a breather, win or not at tOSU.

My opinion, not something passed down from the saints.

He wins today and he gets a breather from folks like you...how generous.

You want him gone if he doesn’t meet your expectations...very pompous of you.

That’s a lie though...if he wins a close game, no way does he get a breather from folks like him. He already predicted that it should be a blow out.
