Kudos to O'Brien - but this program could've gone in any direction imaginable afterwards.

James Franklin, from day 1, brought swagger and lofty expectations to a damaged program - it seemed borderline crazy. "Dominate the State".

Fast forward and we are now seeing 2nd straight reg season top 10 ranking and the recruiting train is top 5 consistently.

Oh and by the way, our superstars are model students, citizens, and teammates. Lookin' straight at you Saquon.

Well done, coach. Thank you for your hard work. Alumni and fans are excited for the future.

Settle down with the top 5 consistently on the recruiting train. He is making marked improvement, but we need two more top five classes to say we are consistently top five.

A toast to Franklin--- Troeg's Perpetual IPA-- from 82 grad-- so proud of what you have done from day1. It's a great lesson in life--- be bold enough and confident enough to say what you aspire for, then say Dominate the State and get the best player in PA 4 straight yrs(including knowing Saquon was best player in PA 4 yrs ago even though experts said someone else that I can't remember). He said at the Press Conference that he was a Pennsylvania boy with a Penn State Heart-- and that he will work tirelessly to get Penn State back. He had a plan-- he has worked tirelessly-- he is genuine and surrounds himself with winners-- coaches and players. We are Penn State Proud of James-- the best times are yet to come, although much to be proud of -- much more than 35-17, (including a 21-5 run in past two ), after inheriting a depleted squad and depleted OLine, special teams due to sanctions. Take a bow, Coach!!

If I say Top 10, does that make you feel better?

If you want to call finishing 24, 15, 21, 12, 3 consistent top 5 or consistent top 10, then we minds as well say we've had two straight 1 loss seasons. Does it show tremendous improvement? Absolutely. Is it consistently top 5 or top 10? Remains to be seen.

Yawn.

We'll see what we can do to get the program to live up to your standards.

What Franklin has accmplished already is astounding. Penn State is again an elite program and despite all of Harbaugh’s anticts, Penn State and Ohio State are indisputably the best programs in the B10.
And his players have been class acts on and off the field.
Is there a bigger disciplinarian in the P5 than Franklin?
There are many coaches who let players play who have criminal charges against them, while Franklin suspends starters for important games for violating team rules.
To his credit, Franklin has always stressed the long term and sticking to the process and he hasn’t deviated from that for short term gains.

If you consider the academics as Coach Franklin outlined, it is #1 recruiting class in the nation! Hard work paid off!!

No one can deny what James has done here at PSU. Sooner is correct in saying he had not established yet that the program will be top 5 or 10 recruiting every year. However, no one in their right mind can deny the trajectory that the program has in his tenure and there is no reason to believe he will not obtain that top 5-10 recruiting year after year status. Who does not like what James has built here..... the only people I can name would be perhaps Urbs, Harbaugh, and a few of the older coaches with programs that have peaked out and whose brand is passe and spooning to a past that is gone. James energy is infectious, his brand is exciting and honorable, his fatherly attitude toward his players is undeniable and he is above all a teacher while being a student himself and involves everyone in his program in taking ownership of the programs present and future. If CJF continues to be CJF, I do not see any reason that his program will not become a perennial top 5 or top 10 competitor in recruiting and ranking here at PSU year in and year out.... does anybody else?

Here here! Very excited about where this program is headed and the awesome job CJF has done. Love the positive press the program is now getting nationally and the blue-collar work ethic and focus Franklin appears to be instilling.

Although I gripe about assistant coaching turnover, at the end of the day I think it's CJF that's the pillar, the CEO, that brings the stability and confidence. seems to me that top recruits are seeing that CJF "has it".

And remember how hard certain people in the media tried to short circuit our signing of Franklin by bringing up issues at Vandy that he was totally cleared on. They didn’t want us to have one of the 2 hot coaching candidates that year; they wanted us to settle for mediocrity. The lead radio jocks in Austin are Buckeye and Boston College guys. They kept up this drumbeat, for example.

Sorry fellas. We are back

Unfortunately we're going to be awful next year because we lose Barkley....I know that because I read it on the Lair. Apparently top 5 recruiting classes don't matter.

We have entered a different zone. One that we haven't been in for a long time. Recruiting superior talent who appear to be excellent character student athletes as well (something we nearly always attained). Considering the state of the program when JF took over this is astounding.

BoB wanted the job when he came here and did a good job. JF saw this as his dream attained, a chance to coach his home state's flagship program and the opportunity to attain the top of the top goals in his career. He is following through remarkably with recruiting off the charts in comparison to his previous level of success at Vanderbilt. He is driven and has a fantastic plan for success that he does not deviate from for temporary satisfaction.

I believe we could not have picked a better man to lead our program at this juncture than James Franklin, son of Pennsylvania, man of character - developer & leader of men. The rest will follow in succession.

Coach Franklin is just getting his ideas rolling, the best is yet to come. MOST knowledgeable football fans knew deep down it would take 3 or 4 recruiting classes to get us back to where we were. Wouldn't want anyone else coaching PSU right now, including Dabo, Saban, or Urban.

Coach Franklin, as you can see......everyone who posts here is 100% appreciative and supportive of your leadership.........right up until you lose another game by 1 point.

Lost his top assistants just prior to signing day and no recruit defections. The kids believe in him and I do too. Now, just put in a short yardage package for 3rd and 4th down! ;-)

So are you saying all you want for Christmas is a fullback?

Regardless of football W's and L's, how can you not like this guy? He has been an awesome ambassador for PSU. He has been perfectly balanced in his praise for PSU's tradition and yes, Joe Paterno. Kids love him. He is recruiting at a world class pace, and we are ten seconds from playing in the MNC series and four points from being undefeated.

Wouldn't trade him for any football coach in the country!! He's class (and successful) any way you look at it.

Now hopefully his name doesn't get brought up every time there's an opening. With all the things you listed, why would he leave?

Then we have a lot of posters on here that don't know football. I think having winning records in his first two years was as good a coaching job as what he's done the last two years, especially with the OLine we had and a QB that didn't fit his system.

But they also say Barkley is overrated. Their running back is better, so I've read there.

Technically, you are correct, but there's no solid reason to think he can't do just that.
