Franklin, "Clifford has earned the right to start".

The downside at this point is perception (right or wrong). Many of the same people who want Allar (I'm one of them) will skewer Franklin if Allar costs them a couple of games and the team finishes with 7 or 8 wins instead of 9 or 10.

If you could choose 10-2 with Clifford starting the remaining games or go 8-4/7-5 with Allar which would you take?

Your question answers itself. If one guy gets you to 10 wins and the other guy gets you to 7, then the first guy by definition gives you the best chance to win, which is what it's all about. This is not a close call in my view.

Franklin's comments at the presser today were exactly what you'd expect. If Clifford is healthy, he starts.

I do not disagree that Allar has more upside.

But that doesn't mean he should start if Clifford gives PSU the best chance to win games now. The only people qualified to make that decision are the coaches who see him in practice (and limited game play) week in, week out.

If the coaches deem that Allar gives PSU a better chance to win RIGHT NOW than Clifford (whether qualified by potential injury or not), Allar should play. Otherwise, he should not. Seems pretty simple; I'm not sure why there are 900 threads on this.
Hey it's a message board and fun to debate. Clearly the coaches will make the best decision based on performance. The unknown is how Allar will perform in a game vs practice. I would at least like to see Allar get put in against Minny with the game still in doubt. Cliffy can come back in but let Allar have a few meaningful rips.

Clifford in no way lost that game. We were pounded on both sides of the ball up front. Most likely will happen again this Saturday.

I'm not saying we can't get pounded Saturday, but in no way can Minnesota do it as effectively as Michigan. I believe it's the perfect follow up. Force adjustments or get run over again.

here is the thing: Stevens earned the right to play, but Franklin went with Clifford.

Why did Stevens earn it?

The problem with Clifford is he does not play like a savvy 6yr guy. He is a decent game manager, can make some throws and can tote the rock a bit. All in all very average. There is more upside with Allar. He has a high ceiling and is not close to it yet. Clifford just got a concussion hitting his head on his ceiling. At this stage, the two are probably equal and Clifford may know more of the playbook. There is little downside in starting Allar unless it will cause a team uproar or something which would be Franklin's job to control. I would love to see Allar sling it around like we have never seen in the Beav.

I recently watched a recap of our 1993 game at Northwestern which I attended with my ex brother in law. Young Kerry Collins and young Drew Allar are very similar.

Beyond an obviously talented team, the difference between 93 and 94 Collins was experience. If Sean struggles in the next 2 games, and we find ourselves fighting for 3rd/4th in the division then I see little alternative than to go with Allar and maybe #9 who has also "earned" some reps.

By that time Sean would've more than had his chances and we've gotta move on.

Was Clifford healthy last year against Illinois?

Good point. He started a game, won it and looked good doing it. Until this team gets receivers that can get open consistently they better have a Semi mobile QB.
When your QB cant throw the long ball it constricts the field and makes it harder to get open. Plus Clifford takes too long to get the ball out. We have decent to good wrs. Tinsey was killing it last season.

I don't have any issues with that.

But here is the thing: Stevens earned the right to play, but Franklin went with Clifford. Then Levis earned a shot, but Franklin went with Clifford. Nobody can say they were very satisfied with the last several seasons, yet here we go again, apparently! Can you see any pattern here?
Dude, they are 5-1 this year. What record did you predict for them in August?

Clifford has a 13-2 TD (total) to turnover (total) ratio. Do you know how many teams would kill for a QB to do that and be 5-1.

Your expectations are either crazy or a you are just a hater.

Levis got a start, against Rutgers. It was not the kind of performance that said “play me!” Levis leaving for Kentucky made sense. He did not show enough here.

It’s also fair to say PSU is not developing QB’s well and that’s why Levis is succeeding now. You can make a good case that Hack should have transferred. On and on….but Levis did get a shot. Putting Clifford back in actually made sense after that performance.

Folks, it is not all on Cliff. He is serviceable and capable of making enough good throws to win a game. It is the play-calling. If you can't see that 3rd and 4 at 10 fade route (at start of 2nd) with 0 chance as a problem then not sure what to say. It had Franklin's ink stain failure all over it. Same bullshit play for years. We needed try for first down, chew clock and get the TD. There were no RB screens and TEs in the vacated middle of field all day. Same shit last year. Having Cliff scramble back 10 yards to pass, under pressure on 3rd and shorts...very few offenses can move ball under CJF's perfection or bust play calls.

Why is no one mentioning Veilleux who was the QB in the Rutgers game last year and did well? He should have been placed in the Michigan game after Clifford's injury. Mobile, good arm, throws a catchable ball. Something isn't right here. I guess given his lack of PT, he will portal out and PSU will be left with a QB group sorely lacking in experience. Not good.
You hit the nail on the head--he played well against--Rutgers.

I can see the same old BS from clueless posters making false claims.

True, play calling has not been good. No doubt about it.

at the beginnign of 93 they started Sacca's little brother iirc

John Sacca's pick 6 "pass" to UMiami DE Krein in 1992 still haunts me. We did everything wrong that day. Installed speakers at Beaver Stadium and blasted Public Ememy. The Miami kids said it made them "feel at home."

Missed a couple of field goals, defense played well enough to win but we didn't. Sacca leaving eliminated drama and opened the door for our best team of my lifetime.

Lol...I normally don't like politics in these posts but even I am admitting that there was funny
I agree with the humor and sentiment
...but the same could be said of the prior President and his team of Press Secretaries and mouthpieces.

He would say or type what he really thought, and the next morning they would fan out across networks to say "what he meant."

Same story on both sides. It would really be nice if they all would talk less and say whatever their truth is and forget the "spinning."

The door should have been opened earlier but Collins got in a drunken brawl at the old Dantes restaurant and missed 5 games.
