All are playing in unison and disciplined and professional— Gonzalez is a force- Bates is consistent- Menet is improving fast- high ceiling for this group and our OLine and stable of backs to overwhelm teams and take over games. Defense needs to grow up in a hurry and we will be in and win most games.

For linebacker, we need to just play the best 3 at least 2/3 of game so we have consistency. Maybe that is Franklin’s plan- use the first 4 games as a competition and then see who separates. To me Jan Johnson and Ellis Brooks have been most dependable in getting to play- I believe Brooks plays middle- can he start at one of the outside spots. I would start Micah even though he overruns plays and gets blocked too often- he is better than Cam Brown who has been way over his head as starter- Micah will make impact plays sooner than later.

Love Coach Franklin and assistants— second half adjustments in Pitt and Illinois— both on road is sign of great coaching and not panicking and talent he has stockpiled is amazing to see unveiled each week.

I listened to what I think was the Illinois student postgame broadcast. One of the commentators said he had taken notes in doing research on Penn State and wrote down two words about the OL: Big and nasty.

It was nice to see the Illi. def. linemen push back after plays since our line was hammering them downfield. I haven't seen that in a long, long, time. #69, sweet....he is a big nasty. I watched him specifically after noticing an incident post play w/ a defender about five yards down field. Hope to see a lot more of that in our future. Watching our backs dragging the pile for yards, our line moving in unison as a wave, very satisfying, very satisfying.

We'll see. There have been many other years where we thought the OL was fine or even good until faced with the better conference teams. Illinois starting DL is undersized and on the young side.

We're better than in recent years. That I'll easily concede. Question is are we good enough to have clock-killing sustained drives so as to keep the defense off the field.
