Gary Steen

Some thoughts:

1. Mineo is right, but why not go straight to the source?

(PS, really slimy move by Mineo, essentially copying Steen's tweet without attribution and passing it off as his own breaking news.)

2. Remember those folks who said Cael should steer clear of Steen's father? Oof.

3. Roster implications: Nice pickup. Steen is likely a career 125, and multiple AA material. Howard is now free to move up to 133 after RBY graduates.

4. Recruiting implications: does this say anything about Joey Cruz?

Doesn’t this take care of the lower weights for the next half decade except for one spot:

In 3 years we’ll have BB and SVN to man 141-157 weights with an opening in one of them. Bouzakis?

Perhaps. What this really means is that Cael is back to Luxury Recruiting Mode, instead of Need Mode.

Bartlett + Van Ness + Boone makes a potent 141-157. But we'd still take Bouzakis.

Likewise, if Cruz wants in, gotta listen.

Or someone in future years -- the top three 113s are all in 2023 -- McGowan, Facundo's teammate Horwath, and Latrobe's Kilkeary.

Do you think this rules out Joey Cruz? I sure hope not. That kid is SO impressive.

This buddy of mine is not a PSU fan and it's a joke about the rich gets richer, not Cael cheating to describe the context of it lol.

Not disputing the fact that Steen could be transferring to PSU. That would be super.
Was referencing Mineo......with a little salt ??
This kids for real I think. I may be wrong but I'm thinking he has a high ceiling given the right partners in the room. As of yet I haven't heard he's beating nico in the room so that's good lol

Cruz would be great! at tis point, im thinking you cant have 2 many 125lbs!

True, though we (myself included) are assuming Cruz will be a college 125. Maybe he's a 133? Not that it would change much about him, at least to us.

Joey Cruz is great. I like McGowan. Has length and attacks. I think he would become a bonus point scorer. Hopeful but not certain Steen will be that. As always....Trust in Cael......even at 125lbs. :)

That's a fair question about Steen. Last year he had 15 decisions, 8 MD, 2TF, 19 pins. The 19 pins ... there are a lot of bad HS lightweights.

To his credit, he faced a number of good wrestlers and won consistently. But he very rarely bonused state qualifiers -- and in nearly every one of those matches, he scored 5 pts or less. This tends to indicate a kid who will have to grind out a lot of wins in college.

OTOH, as a SO he pinned both Gonzales (Ohio State commit) and Sotelo (IL state champ). So who knows.

I have not been following real close. What is Howard status this year?
He will be in some low scoring battles as a D-1 freshman I'm sure. Might take a few lumps before he smooths out a bit. He definitely likes to grind and play the part of the bad guy. (Nothing wrong with that!)

According to "some" he is just another atrocious wrestler at 125 behind Spencer. Only time will tell how well he has been training

Turk running wild tonight. I haven't heard any kid stories in a while. How's the terrible twos going?

Mineo is garbage. The Jim Thorpe tweet about a wrestler going to the hospital due to wearing a mask was 100% inaccurate. It never happened. He hears something and tweets immediately.

Don't forget Matt Lee.

While landing Steen is good news, if we don't land Cruz, I'm gonna be left really scratching my head like I've been doing the last several years with regards to us not landing a long term 125 blue chipper. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Is Cruz a long-term 125? Maybe, but we don't know that.
