Gary Steen

This kids for real I think. I may be wrong but I'm thinking he has a high ceiling given the right partners in the room. As of yet I haven't heard he's beating nico in the room so that's good lol

Rumor has it that during a recent visit he was beating Howard in the room, I am not sure but I think it might have come from Mineo.

Steen is definitely an upgrade on anyone at 125 since Suriano and Nico. Howard is a 133 and should be after RBY graduates. Nick B. would look great at 141 followed by Bartlett and Van Ness. That’s a heck of a lower half in a couple of years.

RBY may be around for quite a while yet. After this season he still has 2 more years of eligibility plus a redshirt if he needs or wants it.

Can Tan Tom cry anymore?

He's 1/3 right: Steen did sign an NLI with Pitt, at least according to the Pitt press release.

The next 1/3: he wouldn't know about a release unless the Pitt coaches whined to him -- which would be really crappy of Pitt to let a higher profile coach do their dirty work for them. More likely Ryan is supposing the facts to smear PSU. Wouldn't be the first time.

The last 1/3: Ryan definitely is supposing things. Steen likely had a PSU offer previously. Also there have been kids who committed to PSU without an offer from Cael.

But really, what's the point? Steen could enroll at Pitt in June, enter the portal in July, and be in State College on Labor Day.

Your right regarding the offer, if there is even one. Could be Steen is walking on and worrying about any scholarship money once he gets to PSU and shows what he can do. Maybe Steen decided he is going to PSU no matter what.

Interesting how NLI signed prospects de-commit & end up committing somewhere else without ever being released from the initial NLI. NO COMMUNICATION is allowed during that time. Quite a risk their taking. Unless of course they already know their offer elsewhere. Come on

I really respect Tom Ryan, particularly because of the way his wrestlers always conduct themselves but moments like this man ... he makes it tough to like him.

Ever consider the Steen family knew the rules and took care of it?

Steen is very good, if he can keep his weight down he’ll be a good 125 lber maybe better once he gets in that room. Really want to see Howard this season. See how big he is and how he does against quality college wrestlers.

So did I, why didnt we bring him/ANY 125 today?

And Howard was not cleared medically either, but did travel with the team. JB seemed to give the edge to Howard going forward but said Shunk is battling for the spot. I would guess that having Howard travel shows he has at least a bit of an edge.

This is a classic Cael tactic -- bring him with a road dual and make him make weight, so he's used to the entire routine when he gets his turn.

The liberal portal rules make the NLI for the student athlete mute, it should still be adhered to by the coaches " no tempering" but as far as kids changing their minds meh.

.The portal and NLI have nothing to do with each other. NLI is signed by a kid still in high school so the "transfer" portal is moot.

I think that was his point - with ease of transfer through portal, NLI is meaningless anymore.

Actually ... if a kid can enter the portal in his first summer on campus, then the NLI's only significance to the athlete is financial.

And if he had an existing offer from another school, and that coach honors it, then the financial issue is mitigated.

Think about it this way, a kid with a NLI goes to sign up for classes and than walks down to the portal widow to transfer all in one day. If their is no penalty for breaking your NLI than it's just like a verbal commitment for the student athlete.

I look at a NLI as being "you wrestle for us and we will provide you with $X and whatever else they're allowed to negotiate". Steen is still in HS, so it's not like he's on campus and getting $ from Pitt.

Yes situations like this stink for Pitt, cause it's a hole now in their future lineups they have to fill and they may have turned away others for the same weight. But such is life with college sports today. Life will go on for all involved.

I do hope that with Gary now coming to Penn State he knows that means his dad has to post "one" obligatory post to this forum per season. Please "Two" per season if you are not on the roster for any one match. That will cut down on the 15 concurrent threads of Where is Gary Steen?

I really do appreciate the occasional post by Mr, Brooks or now Mr. Kerkvliet and nothing soothes the savage beasts on this board than "a letter from home".
