Gilman chased Suriano around the mat

Kid's delusional. While he think he is a really good and relentless wrestler, it's not the match I saw either.

And I'll rephrase what a previous poster stated, he certainly acts like a dick quite often but I don't dislike watching him.

Completely delusional. Nick Suriano stayed in the middle of the mat, the entire match and went toe to toe with the #1, 5th year senior that Nico easily beat last year as a 5th year senior. If delusional makes Thomas Gilman feel better about a 1 pt win versus a true freshman... keep being deluded. This was supposed to be their year and again... delusion reigns over what actually happens on the mat.

But I quite like the nutty, over the top interviews that Iowa wrestlers give. Who doesn't like the verbal train wrecks that Iowa wrestlers give way to and knowing the exact time of occurance? From Matt McDonough, to Mike Evans, to Mike Kelly... to actually hilarious Sammy Brooks mullet interview with Shane Sparks. I have personal WTF favorites. It's like an Ivan Drago... redux tape with sucked out, Bevis and Butthead looking drones talking circular nonsense.

Just adds fuel to the fire for consecutive losses. And Thomas Gilman said he didn't care if they (Iowa) lost this dual... Well... here's to Thomas Gilman not caring. Penn State beat you down according to coach Tom Brand's criteria... but Thomas Gilman doesn't care and Mike Evans isn't impressed.

Really? For the most part, that match was wrestled in the center of the mat - lot of head slapping both ways. But I think Gilman needs to watch the video because he never has to "chase" Nick, Nick remained right there in front of him. If anything, Nick was doing the "chasing" in the 3rd, but whatever....

My take on it: Gilman thought he was going to cruise to a title this year, so in order to justify the close contest, he engaged in some revisionist history.

He now knows that there is a true freshman who, possibly, could disrupt his plans and send him out without a B1G or NCAA title on his resume.

Thomas Gilman has brain damage. Or he's mentally ill. Those are the only two conclusions I can draw as to why he thinks he chased Suriano around the mat. He was on roller skates the entire third. Even Hawkeye fans would admit this.

Gilman is a very good wrestler and still the man at 25 this year.

That said, his off the mat antics and WWE schtick are really getting old. Anyone who watched that match objectively knows that Suriano did not back up at all. He stood toe to toe with him.

In fact, for much of the third period, it was Gilman who was doing the backing up.

He's a damn good wrestler but to me there's just something off about him. He seems psycho to me. That can be a good thing on the mat but off of it I don't know....

I'm convinced it's not just antics or a wrestler trying to get into the heads of others. It's as if he doesn't know or even care to know how to shut down the gladiator mentality from time to time and enjoy life.

Was thinking the same thing. His schtick might fly on a wrestling mat, but he's going to need some recalibration for out in the real world.

I've seen some boxers that delusional about the events of a match but never a wrestler.

Love this kind of stuff. I think Gilman's great for the sport, and it'll be better for the sport when Suriano beats him. ;)

Gilman was the better wrestler last night but not by much! Nick will learn from this and only get stronger. I look forward to seeing them wrestle in the Big Ten finals. The next time smells like OT to me.

I don't think anything that Gilman has said in the last few interviews is good for the sport. If it was one interview I would say that interview got away from him. But he has embraced this WWE nonsense. Aside from clearly not discussing the facts( Suriano stayed in the middle all match) what good does this do? Your team lost and you still don't have the big ring either. I don't know if he thinks this fires his team up or he just is off on his own psychological adventure. On another note I thought Iowa came to wrestle and should be commended for that.

Gilman is definitely the "villain" this year. Everyone of his interviews and matches will be broken down and dissected for any possible flaw. He is ok with that. Im ok with that. Carry on

Gilman can say what he wants. He wanted no part of Suriano late in the 2nd through the 3rd pd. His bravado isn't going too allow him to admit Suriano is good and better than Gilman expected. Iowa fans had better hope Gilman realizes this before March.

"Gilman calling out Joey Dance"

I'm thinking that he may get him in "national duals". I believe that VT is the 2nd highest ranked Non-Big team and Iowa looks like the 2nd highest BIG team. Could we some fun and games in Blacksburg in late Feb.??

Since a trip to Stillwater is a little too much for me, I'd love to go to Blacksburg in my PSU gear;)

I hope you are right but TG got his TD pretty easily when he finally shot and Nick didn't really get through his D the entire match.
on another note, btn announcers stating that Gunther had VJ on the ropes.... 3 td's to 0. 4 escapes doesn't mean you're in the match!

I tend to agree with you a_m. It was a "close match", but Gilman controlled the match from the 1st period and never really looked out of control relative to winning it imho (i.e., Just not sure Nick has the neutral offense to penetrate Gilman's defense....Gilman wrestled like he knew he could make the early TD "stand up" and decided he wasn't going to take the risk and mix it up further....looked like he knew he wasn't getting the MD, so he he just wrestled to make the TD "stand up" for the W.). But hey, maybe that's just me.

I thought if Nick committed completely in the 3rd period he could have finished it. Or if he had taken a committed shot earlier.

Maybe Gilman could listen to the words of one his own Hawkeye newspapers:

  • Thomas Gilman got the win at 125, which preserved his undefeated season, but he had his hands full with Suriano, a true freshman who's more than lived up to the hype so far. Gilman talks a big game about attacking and taking it to his opponents, but he's had a tendency to wrestle more reserved against top tier competition. If he wants to be looked at as one of the top guys in the sport this year, he needs to keep taking it to opponents and looking for points. Suriano was the clear aggressor in the third period and only some very impressive defense from Gilman was able to prevent the freshman from scoring a possible match-winning takedown. Suriano should leave this match with plenty of confidence for potential rematches at the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments -- I'm not sure Gilman can say the same.
