Penn State picks up transfer wide receiver Weston Carr

Weston Carr, an NCAA Division II All-American wide receiver out of Asuza Pacific University in California, has announced via Instagram that he'll be joining the Nittany Lions for his final season of eligibility.

"After 4 amazing years at APU, it is with gratitude that I announce my decision to become a Nittany Lion. Azusa, you are my foundation for this new beginning, and I’m thankful for the love and support you gave me on and off the field. Go ‘Cougs"

Carr will play his last season of eligibility with the Nittany Lions.

This past season, Carr reeled in 33 receptions for 644 yards and 12 touchdowns following two productive seasons as a freshman and sophomore.

Weston Carr statistics
Receptions Yards Touchdowns
2016 48 903 9

2017 86 1,458 18

2018 33 644 12

This spring, Penn State head coach James Franklin has made statements regarding the program's need for potential transfers, particularly at wide receiver and on the offensive line.

"And then I think like us, like a lot of programs in the country, we're going to maybe add a few guys between now and then from a transfer perspective. Wide receiver is something that we got our eyes open and looking around for," said Franklin this spring. "And possibly on the offensive line as well. So that's something that would change our picture here between now and camp as well."

Carr becomes the second wide receiver to join the Nittany Lions this offseason, along with former Florida State wideout George Campbell.

You’re kidding, right?

Anybody who thinks there is a grad transfer offensive tackle out there who is going to be better than Will Fries is kidding themselves.

Has anybody ever looked at the portal rankings on 247?

The top rated tackle is a kid from Illinois who sat out last year due to academics. The second highest rated tackle is from Tennessee. He might be okay, i dunno.

What I do know is both of those teams stunk last year.

I would guarantee you that if Fries put his name in the portal he would instantly be the top rated offensive tackle.

Uh....... check those eyeglass prescriptions.

Fries was at LT last year.
Is he going to move to RT? If so, then you have the hole at LT instead of RT. :)

The starting o-line in every open practice session has had Rasheed Walker at LT and Fries at RT. Des Holmes has been the backup LT, and he’s reportedly a pretty good pass blocker.

I just think the transfer market for o-lineman is total garbage compared to a lot of the other positions. It’s also really hard to get an o-lineman integrated as quickly. Pat Narduzzi has been trying recently with terrible results.

I thought it was the opposite for Holmes. Good run blocker but isn’t moving his feet quick enough yet for pass blocking.?
Potential is very high though.

“Carr caught 167 passes for 3,005 yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons at the Division II level. He caught 15 of those touchdowns in 2017 and hopes that production can carry over to the next level.“

Proven ability to get open and catch. Looks like a good addition.

Seems like franklin is committed to putting the best receivers he can get on the field and is giving no promises to seniority. One of these transfers is going to start.

I bet this guy starts, actually. Shorter will be the starter on one side with Campbell backing him up, Carr on the other side with Dotson backing him up, and Hamler in the slot.

Kind of puts the lie to the off heard "we are so loaded with talent -"

He sounds like the next Jerry Rice.

Penn State had more losses in the transfer portal than any other program. I recall a great deal of weeping and gnashing of teeth.....now Franklin fills out the scholarship roster with seasoned athletes. This is evidence of a lack of talent on the current roster? Some people are never happy. I see experienced depth, fine athletes to serve on special teams and competition at every position at each and every practice.

You can, but I wouldn't.

Nice post Marshall, but lets clarify a bit. "more losses in the transfer portal than any other program". right and it did cause the board some concern.
"now Franklin fills out the scholarship roster -" Well yea, and doesn't that suggest that there may be a bit of a "lack of talent" ?
"some people are never happy-" Not me I'm pleased with the situation, just realistic.
"I see experienced depth-etc_" Yea I do too and a few glaring holes as well;)o_O:D

He's a solid transfer. Older player, good hands, but nothing about him screams "penciled in starter". Perhaps if too many passes get dropped again, we have a player who we can put in with a history of making receptions.

Now if he could turn into a true threat and parlay this into getting drafted, that would be amazing. The likelihood is very low.

You can, but I wouldn't.

He’s already an all-American and his brother was one of the best WRs in the B1G, who’s now playing in the NFL. He’s got the genes, he’s got the size, he’s got the experience, and he’s got results.

He’s sort of the opposite of Campbell who was hyped and has lots of talent but no pedigree, results, or experience to go with it.

couple of things, if he starts, what does that say about the guys we have here now?
If he starts, how many of the young guys enter transfer portal? it seem now a days looking at someone wrong puts them in the portal. Ask Geno
if he doesn't start, and we play the young guys, what is he going to do? Transfer? go to the AAF?

Looks like he only had 4 catches for 30 yards total in the last 6 games last year. Was he injured?

Why leave scholarships unused? That would be cause for "concern" here. I don't see adding one year grad transfers to fill unused ships as a suggestion of any lack of talent. I see it as a staff doing their jobs and understanding that football is a game of attrition. Injuries are an unfortunate reality of the game. I can only imagine the experts here pointing to the failure to pad the roster when starters go down.

A D2 AA, whose best alternative offers were to walk on at Boise State, Nevada, and Northwestern (who should know more about his genes than any other program).

I hope the kid makes 100 catches and PSU wines 15 games in the bargain. That combination isn't likely to happen.

Yes, he had some type of injury that caused him to miss close to half the season.

Not exactly. Played in all eleven games but limited action in the last half of the season dues to a hamstring injury.

yea, a quite reasonable view. I'm comfortable with that.

Are those his grad transfer options or options out of high school?
