Great attendance at Iowa - Purdue Dual

Thought it would be a slow night around here, silly me, haha.

I'm a fan of both programs but the argument that Iowa fans support their program more than PSU fans due to leading in attendance every year is a bit hollow. Pointing out that Iowa led the country in attendance with an average of 8,996 per match also reveals that Iowa led the country in empty seats with an average of 6,504 per match (based on CHA's capacity of 15,500).

I've always wanted to see a big match at CHA as I'm sure it's an awesome atmosphere and an at- or near-capacity crowd. Sell-outs at CHA are good for wrestling because it means that two giants are battling. It has to be an awesome home mat advantage. But Penn State has an awesome home mat advantage with Rec Hall.

Penn State wrestling has had a waiting list for season tickets for the past 5-6 years. Even when PSU wrestles a non-ranked opponent, Rec Hall is sold out and Standing Room Only. The product that Penn State puts on the mat- offensive, creative, high-scoring- is what has led to the high demand for tickets even more than the recent Championships. Sold out Rec Hall is also good for wrestling. And when PSU offers matches at Bryce Jordan Center, those sell out too. But, since BJC isnt owned by PSU it does not benefit PSU wrestling to host matches there - it's a break-even in terms of profit. But, it allows many loyal PSU fans who can't get tickets to a match at Rec Hall a chance to attend a PSU wrestling match. If PSU wrestled all of their matches at BJC, they may not sell out but I wouldnt be surprised by an average attendance of 10k.

As a fan, I hope PSU never overtakes Iowa for highest annual average attendance. If they did, that would mean either that PSU is hosting more duals in BJC than Rec Hall, which would be bad, or Iowa has dropped off so much that CHA is more empty than full, which would be even worse.

I hope that Iowa widens the gap in attendance since that will happen as a result of an improved product on the mat - both from a change in style and a change in the rules. Spencer Lee is a great guy to lead that change and it appears that he is changing the Iowa style away from the Gable model and more toward a Penn State style. Ohio State is doing the same. I think the best is still ahead of us with PSU, Iowa, and Ohio State coaches, wrestlers, and FANS leading the way.

I too prefer Rec Hall to the BJC. To me, Rec Hall is the perfect venue. I feel if it were a 10000 seat arena PSU would be the leader in attendance figures but who cares. Let the Iowa fans hang their hats on it.

Btw, you should post more often.

The best take yet on the iowa match from the HR is that they didnt announce that half the team was out so PU wouldnt scout the iowa back ups.

This thread was started about college wrestling attendance. I presented 12 straight years of facts on NCAA wrestling attendance. You should go back and check that

Great. Those facts are actually more interesting than the “Iowa style” of wrestling.

Turk and I are more alike than he realizes. He sticks up for his guys just as I do over there. Our mods are just more down with it than the mods are over there.
I don't think anybody here whines to the mods like a 4-year-old about Turk or most of the other hawk posters. You get a collective whine from HR. The HR dudes have also learned a collective whine is usually given in to. Even when the mods call them out for being a collective of whiney pussy cats.

They know Howard is a studious lad so they wanted to show him that CHA is so quiet, he can get some homework done in between matches.

According to an article https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/iowa-purdue-wrestling-dual-results-score-20181124?template=amphtml
The attendance was 8122. From what I saw they weren’t anywhere close to that number.

the pics I saw dont say 8000+. That sounds like a "paid attendance" number, which takes into account the season ticket holders, even if they dont show up. The PR departments at all the schools, venues, teams, etc across sports/entertainment all play games with attendance figures. We do it too.

They said the beav had 98k+, which is as big a trumpian crowd estimate as there ever was. We sit in SAU and it was half full by my view.

Beat me too it. Announced tickets sold. You really can't blame people for deciding to not drive across the state in horrible weather with the possibility of freezing rain (for both events). Throw-in that many of the PSU parking lots were closed...

Half would be a gracious assessment. Both uppers May have had 10%. The student section was 20%. 98k is just plain silly. Using paid attendance as the number makes announcing record crowds just as false.

Good plan to shut off 5 of the 7 openings at 3 entrances on the North end yesterday. (Dripping and angry sarcasm). They mananged to create a long ass line to get in yesterday. Longer than any game this year.

Back to wrestling. I agree with the assessment that having Iowa lose its attendance lead would be a bad sign that either less people are going or we are using BJC more. Rec Hall is an enormous advantage, one that Basketball sorely misses. It badly needs a services update/addition and will be on the facilities plan if the plan is ever released. But it’s intimate and loud and in big matches, even a swing of 1% makes intangible....tangible.

That's all we need alcohol mixed with wrestling fans lmfao

Although I agree, the amount of beer consumed between sessions at NCAAs & BIGs is quite awesome. Used to consume quite a bit myself, but old age has me limiting my consumption.

Any more if I drink more than one beer between sessions I might nap through the next session.

Why do we never hear about the "flu bug" hitting the PSU wrestling room? How can David Taylor never miss a dual? We have seen our stars wrestle with obvious ailments. Here is why: our wrestlers are just as committed as our coaches to put the best product on the mat evertime we wrestle. Not saying other teams are "soft" , but if the shoe fits.

???

Someone on HR posted that Spencer had the flu yesterday and that is why he sat out. Of course, someone else posted that he was seen sitting and chatting with Howard in the stands during the match.

Who knows what's true, but that's probably what led to the above post.

We never hear about PSU being affected by long bus rides or average officials either.

The conversation between Spencer and Robbie was probably interesting.
Robbie: Spencer, tell me why I should come to Iowa and not Penn State.

Spencer: If you go to Penn State you are just one of 9 guys beating Hawkeyes. You are only one of the 4 or 5 guys winning national championships. You know that's what they do. If you come here you can be just like me. The only Hawk beating those Lion guys. The only Hawkeye winning a championship. Here, instead of being one of the best 4 or 5 on the championship team you can be the best guy on the third best team.

Zain had the flu once and wrestling with it made sorenson give the HR all kinds of hope....

Little did they know that the flu would go away and snorenson wouldnt.

This board needs a hate everything Iowa thread. Pin it at the top of your page. Then Tom, Tim and the rest of the mods can move the weekly 4-5 Iowa threads into one spot. If you think about it, not a bad idea, right?
