HBO’s Smear Trailer: Paterno

If it wasn't going to be a smear job they never would have made the movie. Otherwise why would they name the movie for someone who did absolutely nothing wrong instead of focusing on the person who was charged and convicted? They want to make money and a story about someone who has been wrongly trashed won't do that.

For Chrissake.. Don't watch that shiat! Given the prevalence of the false narrative, the best plot treatment PSU alums and fans could hope for is something resembling a Greek tragedy ("he was flawed, and it took him down," yada, yada, yada). I'm guessing it will be more negative than that, and smear Joe to no small extent. I won't be watching any of it.

i think we can all assume that it will have no basis in facts. it will be very interesting how they handle this, as there is no evidence against Joe, only fake news. since there is not likely anything that holds them back, the movie will portray some false sensationalized narrative - which by now is the assumed truth.

Hey I was pleased that they made the statue better and our whole damn University couldn’t.

Also I’m guessing the meeting between Joe and admin you saw in the trailer was from 2004 or 2005. “Try it!”

If it is so far off base, why can't Sue go after them for slander? He may be dead but the film will likely do material harm to her and her kids, grandkids, etc.
I believe slander is nullified on a dead person in Pennsylvania. When the slander issues began five years ago, I remember reading that not all states have the same slander restrictions as PA. I wonder If the movie is playing in a state that allows litigation in defense of a dead person, if the Paternos could sue.

Let's wait and see the entire movie first before we reach for the pitchforks and torches. If, as some people here believe that the movie isn't factual or true to history, heavily pressure HBO for accountability in their conclusions. If satisfaction is still not achieved, go to the nuclear option and tell them you are cancelling your subscription. I have not had ANY movie channel subscription since 1992 and I don't miss HBO, Showtime, or any of them.

Again, I wonder who the audience is supposed to be for this. Who, unaffiliated with PSU, would want to sit down and watch a pedophile movie? And who from Penn State, who thinks JoePa was railroaded, is going to watch it? It seems like a movie without an audience.

The trailer is already not factual, so where are the facts going to come from?

Agree. Many on this board decry those outsiders who jump to conclusions without all the facts, but do the same thing when it suits their purpose.

Joe died months after all of the Sandusky accusations came out. He made one statement about it, which has a quote that is constantly taken out of context. Nobody ever heard any of this from his point of view.

I have no idea how much Joe knew. At this point we'll never know. What I do know is that any portrayal of Joe regarding the Sandusky Scandal in this movie will be entirely made up considering they have absolutely zero source material for a movie who's title is Paterno and deals with the Sandusky scandal.

Well, the fact that Joe did know is factual. The fact that Joe did the legally, limited as required by law, is factual. In addition, the fact that University officials did try and terminate, or remove him, and he challenged them is well documented. So far the trailer looks very factual. You may not like the result but what was in the OP is pretty spot on for now

Please show me where all the documentation is that shows he challenged them when they tried to remove him. Joe making a joke about it 14 years ago is hardly well-documented and that had nothing to do with the Sandusky situation. So either HBO decided to take artistic license and make what supposedly happened back in 04 part of the post Sandusky mess or it was a flashback, which even what was said in that meeting is not documented fact. So the trailer looks like more Hollywood than fact.

Um has anyone seen this or am I late to the party?

Not a good look for a Paterno movie. Turns out it’s worse than many of us imagined.

A legitimate Paterno movie would be about his entire life accomplishments and setbacks. It wouldn't be focused on what he did or didn't know about Sandusky.

This seems more like a Bernie Madoff movie. The only difference is that Madoff was a criminal. Paterno simply followed policy and reported what he was told to his boss. But HBO won't allow such details to stand in the way of a good story.

The big question is how HBO depicts McQueary's report to Joe.

I think we all know what's coming.
