Head Scratching Decisons 2016-17

Letting Nevills get his weight to nearly 260 pounds was a head-scratcher for me. He seems to do better at around 250.

Pittsburgh would be a great place to hold it...
Vegas. Travel, lodging, and dining options are both abundant and relatively inexpensive. Lots of extracurricular opportunities for those not interested in watching all six sessions (read: wife).

Would prefer Cliff Keen over The Scuffle. Chattanooga is not easy to get to and I prefer to spend the holidays with family and friends. I also liked that our wrestlers got to go home and recharge their batteries over Christmas and New Years. I believe it gives us an advantage over the schools that attend The Scuffle or Midlands, both as a recruiting tool (wrestle for us, be home for the holidays) but also helping towards peaking at the right time of year. Western exposure is also a plus.

Finally, Tom Ryan and Kyle Snyder, risking the entire future of a great wrestler, to get 8 extra points, therefore losing the national title by a mere 36.5 points, instead of 44.5 points. Clutch.

Snyder's performance proved his injury was not that much of a risk. Lifting Medberry pretty much extinguished any idea that the rib injury was as severe as thought. Not only that but also facetious to claim that Ryan put him on the mat only for the team score as I'm sure Snyder wanted to wrestle in the championship regardless of whether his team had a shot or not. Plenty of other things to criticize Ryan on, but this isn't one of them.

Las Vegas will never be an option. The T-Mobile Arena may meet the specifications at about 18,000 for a National Championship, but that's on the small side, and won't be a feasible option. Then there's the whole gambling thing...so again, no go.

Saw an article from Mark Palmer that suggests Las Vegas is an option. I'm still not convinced it is. Here's a list of the largest arenas in the country, and a capacity (which may or may not represent the capacity for an 8-mat wrestling setup. Sorry in advance for the formatting..listed is the arena name, capacity, and city. I went all the way to the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, as it was held there several years ago...but never will again (too small). The bottom half or so are probably out, based on the current level of attendance for the National Championships.

I think the head scratcher for Ryan, will be somebody pulling down to 157 this year, rather than somebody pulling down to 125.

Ohio State will be closer next year. Okie State and Iowa probably do not chase 100 and that will leave more points on the table for the NatureNuts.

If he can get NATO down to 125 that gives them probable AAs in the first 4 weights as well as the bottom 4 weights (all 4 at least past finalists) with Campbell at 165.

An update on North Carolina (where I know the Greensboro Coliseum, capacity 23,500 at the top of Roar's list, and experienced at holding big sporting events) has been interested in hosting the NCAA Wrestling championships: the state legislature passed and the Governor signed a bill changing the provisions of their policy toward transgender discrimination. The NCAA has since said they WILL consider North Carolina again for hosting championship events (and the ACC has done the same thing).

This is obviously late in the selection process, but we'll see if it makes any difference. Would love to see the wrestling tournament in Greensboro.

Actually they passed a law restating that LGBT discrimination is OK, then put out a press release saying they didn't do that. Nobody was fooled. North Carolina is still off limits to the NCAA.
North Carolina had a choice between being a modern prosperous state and being a slum full of barefoot hicks. They chose barefoot hicks.

You can debate the NC policies, but the NCAA is back in play for championship events in North Carolina.

Sort of. They originally said no but then sort of removed the ban. From the article you reference:
The N.C.A.A.’s carefully worded statement left the door open to its continuing to make decisions on a case-by-case basis and even to retracting hosting opportunities on short notice in light of new developments — as it did last year, when it moved several championship events, including men’s basketball tournament games, out of the state. The N.C.A.A. noted that it requires prospective hosts to submit “additional documentation” — it includes a questionnaire — about their ability to protect visitors from discrimination.

Looks like you have difficulty admitting your post was wrong.

And maybe you need some work on your own tolerance?

The NCAA allowing ESPNever the rights to broadcast the event. Sorry, forgot about their collusionary relationship.

Easy on the Campbell AA thing: Kid scored 3 points last month in St Louis, and the weight class is LOADED again next season.

Me, deciding that this thread was going to be short and not wroth the read before i clicked on it to see how it got to 3 pages. i was wrong.

BS politics.... the ACC wrestling championships were in Raleigh this year. NCAA should stick to governing its own programs and not others. They have plenty of work to do within.

I'd love to see it in the southeast and promote wrestling more down here. Was at the last one down here (I believe the last one)--UNC 1994 when McCoy won his first NCAA title and Abe & Kolat came in 3rd.

Roar you should be careful about saying Tournament will NEVER be held in Vegas. I understand they are receiving serious consideration. Just saying.

Neutral-site events were pulled from the state. The ACC Wrestling Championships were hosted by North Carolina State University, and as such, was not pulled.

Hey after the Flo debacle, I was just happy to be able to watch our wrestlers without having to resort to finding the action on someone's Facebook page... That was painful

NYWrestler94, over on HR, agreeing with someone's post about Cael being a "scumbag".

And no, you cannot agree to 35 percent of a post. Someone writes something, you agree with it, and you are on the hook for the whole post.

Unless you are a card carrying member I suppose...:)

In that vein I don't disagree. Wrestling exposure on a big stage is always good. Especially when the good guys are winning.

Ok outsider here, I've been scrathing my head over why did Gillman not take down instead of netural in 3rd period. He had riding time can't believe that choice.

He wrestled a poor TACTICAL match. He certainly did NOT "fade" as others claim.

I was surprised by that, as well as Mayes taking down on Zain in 3rd period, and Lizak not taking top against Cruz (he dominated Cruz from the top the first time they wrestled).

I've lived in both states. I was actually born in Winston Salem and have tons of family a stones throw away from the Greensboro Coliseum in nearby Kernersville. Moving back there in my early twenties, I quickly realized North Carolina was doing some great things there in terms of population growth and their economy. Haven't looked it up but I'd say growth in PA pales in comparison to NC in both categories.

After my job brought me back to Pa, first to the Harrisburg/York area then to Western Pa, at times it almost felt like I was moving back in time. Don't get me wrong, in my opinion the hills of Pa is a great place to raise a family but let's face it, there ALOT of areas of this great state that has been terribly forgotten. And when you mention "barefoot hicks".. you might want to make a trek toward the Appalachian mountains. I'm still unsure how counties such as Bedford, Cambria and Somerset escaped being mapped into West Virginia. When I brought my wife here, that bare foot Logan County WV coal miners daughter felt right at home.
