Headline on cnn.com today: "Penn State slammed for ignoring reports on hazing"

The drinking stuff doesn't surprise me at all, but pledges really willing to partake in an elephant walk to gain admittance to a frat? Wowzers.

I'm confused. It's an elephant walk, yet they say barren ignored what was going on.

Just heard the story on news radio. The charge of administrative negligence was reminiscent of the Sandusky matter. Not an excuse, but how many major universities - particularly with Greek systems - don't have a drinking problem? What's the solution to letting very young adults in a social fraternity setting police their own drinking? I have no idea how this is done at Penn State or any other university, but I now expect extreme measures to be taken at Penn State.

I have banned all things CNN and refuse to click on the link. According to Wikipedia, the first suspected death due to hazing was in 1838 and there have been 42 such tragic events since 2000. And not all of these were fraternities. Pretty sure every college and university having Greek life in the country is concerned about hazing and trying to educate students on their dangers. Pretty sure Penn State has been educating students on this for years. It just seems the name Penn State grabs more attention. Where are the stories on LSU and FSU since they are more recent?

So no doubt Dambly will announce on TV tonight that Barron and Sims are no longer in their positions at PSU. Wonder who is running over the sticky note to them at Old Main?

If you are aware of the chronology of events - dating back several years - "administrative negligence" is a very mild accusation.

This is weird. Since when do Grand Juries make suggestions about compliance matters?

And, I call BS on the story that a whole pledge glass put their fingers in another guys butt. Just ridiculous.
Not 100% sure, but Grand Juries are broadly empowered to speak about almost any subject they wish to address.

OTOH, almost everything a GJ "says" is written out in detail for them by the prosecutor.

I'm by no means defending the practice of hazing nor absolving the crimes committed by Sandusky. But why has Penn State become the media 'lighting rod' of society's ills, when we all know these horrible events occur all over the country and on virtually every college campus?
When the BOT decided we would - if you never challenge any accusation one assumes you are guilty and that is what they have done over and over again - accept guilt when deserved but defend your school when it isn’t which is something they have never done.

I feel strongly that the day of the fraternity has come to an end.
There's too many very wealthy and powerful people both in charge at PSU and our government that are Frat brothers to eradicate them. We'll see.

The most powerful people at PSU promoted the very coverup culture narrative which CNN is repeating here. If someone tells you who he is, believe him.

Did I just miss the world's most ironic joke?

Lack of effective, proactive leadership, with only self-service in mind, in 2011-12 and now with the OGBOTBots still running the show.
Just my opinion.

I didn't read this article but read the Onward State recap earlier. A couple of things quickly stood out.

1. SPM stated that the investigation didn't focus on one specific frat and found problems in many of them, using that as the basis for a conclusion that PSU and IFC are at fault. This rationale conveniently overlooked the fact that numerous other universities have the same problems because that wouldn't fit the "blame PSU" narrative.
2. Apparently SPM's replacement spoke and was quoted as saying something about the university's culpability is similar to Joe Paterno all over again.

Those 2 points immediately made me roll my eyes and dismiss their press conference for a lack of credibility.

How did we become the lightning rod, the redheaded stepchild, the go to U for all sorts of society's ills, you say.

That's easy. WE VOLUNTEERED FOR IT WHEN WE LET EGREGIOUS POND SCUM RUN OUR UNIVERSITY FOR A GENERATION OR MORE! THEY had a guy write a report which was used as proof for all the world to see that our grads are people without honor.

Perhaps you have forgotten.

Easy answer: OGBOT members and those who bow to their “brilliant” public relations management have placed a bullseye on Penn State.

I don't think there is much doubt about the fact that the people in charge of this university are incompetent, and are quickly running it into the ground. Even I am getting tired of the constant litany of bad news and seemingly bad decisions. How long will it be until someone like the governor decides that there needs to be a new governing system in place?

Any valid points or meaningful info that you have are completely lost on me (and I'm sure many others) when you feel the need to throw a homophobic slur in the middle of your post...

I'm the one who created the connection between Damon Sims and sucking dick. The man is so monumentally incompetent, such a useless blob of protoplasm, so incapable of accomplishing anything that is even marginally useful, that the only explanation for him to continue to be employed is that someone must like the way he sucks dick.

You may ask why instead of that act, I didn't say something like "kiss ass," "suck ass," or "lick ass." Sorry, but none of those are sufficient to explain why Damon Sims has a job.

So, you see, it has nothing to do with the sexual preference of the man. He just must do it to keep his job.

It's sad that it's 2017 and you see no issues with posting that crap on a message board.

Parks Miller is a joke of a da. Nothing but a publicity stunt for her own personal gain she was a caricature at the podium plain and simple. Read the report and in there she even concedes that if they Implement every single recommendation it does not necessarily prevent death by hazing just basically they have to go dry.

And if you go dry they'll just resort to other hazing techniques like broomsticks up the butthole North Schuylkill High School anyone?

I mean honestly at some point there's personal responsibility the university could look over as much as you want but there's already underage drinking laws on the books so what the frick the difference suspend anyone take away their Charter it doesn't matter you're just going to have private house parties.

Having been a student at PSU and attending many parties at both PSU and other
Universities, I know that drinking and hazing has been part of the college and fraternity culture
for a very long time. Unfortunately for PSU a pledge died. But the real problem was that
no one sought help for someone who was in distress. Perhaps the other brothers were
too drunk to realize the extent of his condition. But unfortunately the participants and
PSU are going to pay the price for something that is common on almost every campus.
However if it stops the excessive hazing everywhere, hopefully some good will come of it.

It pains us all, but there's no way to defend what happened. Heads are going to roll for it, one way or another, and rightfully so. Hopefully this time it is the proper heads. It could have happened anywhere, but it didn't.

The diatribe today by the DA against the school is just more of the same. Nobody will mount much of a verbal response in any venue, and SPM knows it. She realizes that she gets a free punch, even outside of the usual Grand Jury indictment free punches. She may as well throw a haymaker, since there will be no rebuttal.

There are a couple reasons that make PSU an ideal candidate to tear down. PSU always did things the right way, and people like to tear down the best of us, it makes them feel better about themselves. The large number of alumni is another reason. Obviously PSU grads care about PSU news... but grads of other schools also like to tear down PSU because their college experience was inferior to ours. I've met so many people over the years that hated PSU because they didn't understand why we loved it so much.
