Hey Rich or AKB Tinsley Portal Question

How do our two WR Portal guys compare to Tinsley in ranking???size speed and stats???
Thanks to everyone in advance
Good question. I would guess Cephas is the closest comp in terms of a proven guy with tons of production at a slightly lower competition level. I think McClain is a case of having all of the ideal measurables and high talent level but hasn't yet had a real opportunity to break through. Curious what the staff here says about these guys stacking up to Tinsley who was a very good addition for us.

They LOVE McClain so far I know that for a fact.
I feel like this can be the year we make a run at elite. The offense was looking elite prior to MCClain. He would be icing on the cake. I think DT is the only unknown that potentially can hold us back.

They need to find a portal dt but if they don't then someone needs to be moved over there or at least 2 guys need to gain 30 lbs.

The status quo there will not get it done.

Agreed. We are still at risk of a ground and pound opponent blowing up our season - UM and Iowa in particular next season.

Sure Rip Rivals makes you pay for it...
You can find most of this stuff via Google or set Yahoo Sports news for PSU and you can view almost all this news Via different outlets aggregated to one spot. The info on McClain was on multiple free sources by mid afternoon yesterday.

Lol. As, if Rivals is the only source for analysis. There are at least a half dozen articles plus streamable videos addressing this subject out there that do not require a pay wall.

Why would DT be an "unknown" when almost every DT that played any significant minutes the past 2 years will be back to play again, other than PJ who missed over half of 2021 and Tangelo in 2021. And Durant that only played ini 2023 but was a positive surprise as a true freshman and is likely the DT who will make the biggest improvement going into 2023. And those DT's, mainly Ellies and Izzard, were forced to play without PJ for the last 8 games of the 2021 season which although not ideal pushed ahead their playing time and development. And going into 2023 the DT's that filled in for PJ in 2021 have had another season and 2 off seasons to get stronger and refine their technique.

Izzard, Ellies, Beamon, Durant, and Van den berg all return with significant experience, espcially Izzard, Ellies and Beamon who will be the meat of the starting DT's. And Artis and Townley, 2nd and 3rd years respectively at PSU, will likely add to the experienced 5 DT's for 7 total. How is having 5 very experienced DT's form the nucleus of the DT rotation an unknown?

Sure Franklin wants to add another experienced DT from the portal and he will if he can find one in May or June. And if he does the DT roster will be better prepared for potential injuries that often occur.

But the consternation over the 2023 DT's seems to be overblown. Only loss from 2022 is PJ and all the other DT's have had another year to improve. Just the nature of college football.

Sorry I'm just seeing this, in the future feel to tag me so I can see it quicker. To tag someone just type @ and then their username like so @Richard Schnyderite

Anyway I think Cephas is going to be a lot more effective than Tinsley was, as he's just a better overall weapon. Right now Rivals ranks Cephas No. 52 overall in the portal, which also slots him as the 9th best WR transfer as well.

Adding him and McClain (#159 overall) + current roster makeup should make for a potent wide receiver room to go along with arguably the best RB duo in CFB in 2023.

Which DT is going to hold up vs a rushing attack like UM? They gashed us for over 400 yards . I know it takes more than the DT, but if that position is undersized and being pushed backwards the results will be the same. That continues to be my fear. Overall I am super-excited for next season.

Primarily, I think many were hung up on JF saying we were undersized in the post game at Michigan then missed some of the chatter about guys not trusting their assignments and maintaining their gaps. Or choose not to follow it.

I think we lack size at DE for playing Michigan much more than at DT. Carter was not playing as much yet at that point either and nobody came up and tackled very well in space.

We couldn't make them punt. They wore us down. That's how it goes sometimes. We still lack a top 75 DT, but they were fine in 12 other games.

They were not fine against Ohio State.

I don't believe the 1 tech DT's are undersized. Ellies and Izzard will be right around 300 lbs in 2023. And Van den berg as well.

And at 3 tech both Beamon and Durant will be bigger and stronger as well.

So as far as the DT's are concerned, I don't see that they will be weaker, or a big deficiency compared to what Franklin has been fielding since he became PSU's head coach.

If Franklin wants to get bigger he'll have to do more than talk about it. And that doesn't happen in one off season. Regarding UM, Franklin is 3-3 vs them the last 6 seasons. And it's my understanding that some of the UM 2022 Oline will be in the NFL in 2023.

If Franklin wants to get bigger against the run the position where he can accomplish that more directly and easily is by recruiting and fielding bigger DE's. Chop, who played very well in 2022, was reportedly under 240 lbs last season. He was a great pass rusher but 240 lb DE's dont shut down a UM running game. Many here seem to love DE's like Chop and Isaac, but they are too small to stop big running teams. I seem to remember Isaac getting stuffed, failing to set the edge, and being generally a no show vs those UM 400 yards rushing. And until Franklin puts bigger DE's as well as stout DT's on the field his defenses will be a target for great running teams.

PSU has 300 lb DT's and many are up in arms because they are not 320 lbs. 20 lbs or 6.7% from the "ideal" size. Yet many say nothing about 240 lb DE's, when Michigan's DE were 270+. That's 30 lbs or 12.5% under a more stout DE lineup that would hold up better against top running teams.

An all B10 Mike LB and an excellent LB corps can also help shut down great running teams. But the LB's didn't play well against UM last season either. Elsdon spent more time on the ground watching the UM RB's run by than he did makeing stops, not to mention the arm tackles he attemped and didn't complete. The LB group did improve after the UM game when Jacobs went back to Sam and Carter was the main Will, but Dan Connor or Sean Lee didn't show up to play Mike.

So yes, I believe crying about the size of PSU's DT's as the main source of failure against UM and their 400 yards rushing is pretty useless.

Good post. Still, let's find a 320 pound portal DT just for the hell of it...whatcha say Greg?

I agree. The offense will be very good assuming Allar can step in and run the show. I think that is a good assumption at this point. QB-check, RBs-check, TEs-check, WR- a check with our transfers, KLS, Wallace, Saunders, Evans Clifford. And O-Line gets a check finally!

On D, LBs and secondary - check. DE-check with Chop, Issac, DDS Vanover, Smith-Vilbert.

We had 4 turnovers. OSU had 0.

We had more rushing yards and passing yards.

The DTs were not the issue vs the Buckeyes.
How many sacks we get? How many pressures did they get? Yeah they were the problem. They wore down so much that Diaz had unit 3 out there on that drive with 9 minutes left

0 sacks.

Don't know the pressures #.

Franklin has long subbed in 8-10 DL. Could they have performed better? Absolutely. Were they ar fault? I lean towards no.

Clifford threw 3 picks vs a playoff team. Strip sacked for the 4th turnover. So I'd squarely blame QB and RT long before looking at our DTs in that game. Even the DEs and LBs, who usually generate more sacks than DTs.

Good stuff. You win. But we still need to be better at DT.

If we want to win the national title, absolutely.

PJ is our highest rated DT recruit under JF if I'm not mistaken. He's probably, overall, been the best (with his peak being '21 game 1 to Iowa injury).

A tip is when your conclusions are based on a myopic view ...and point in time fixed...then they have no validity. You deny that development happens to a greater or less or extent with time.

Michigan ran for 418 yds against PSU and never punted. Our coach said our DL was way to small. That left an impression on people.

Yep, and I obviously believe there is merrit in Franklin's comments.

But it's not just about fielding a BIG 1 tech DT (i.e. getting a 320 lb transfer). The whole front 7 needs to get bigger and better to stop a running game as good as UM's was last season. And the PSU DE's are really the smallest in comparison to stout front 7's that would fare better against top 10 running teams.

I'm not arguing against what Franklin said. I'm just trying to break it down further. And it seems that Franklin and Scott, and Diaz as well, would find as many or more potential players to bring size to DE and LB than they might finding stud 320 lb+ DT's, which they have so far found few and far between.

Some of that help may be on the roster right now. Vanover is one such player and he looked pretty active in his opportunities last season. And he's a good bit more stout than some of the pass rushing DE's on the roster.

I'm sure the coaches are working on it as we discuss it.......
