There is always a special "charm" to hometown announcers
But - back in the days before the games were all on TV - you definitely needed the "Little Orphan Annie Decoder Ring" to follow a radio broadcast of Fran
A typical play call by Fran, back in the day:
".......Penn State breaks the huddle - 1st and 10 from their own 19.......
The give is to Tom Donchez.....off of right tackle, he's out over the 20, over the 25, and finally brought down at the 23.......
It will be 3rd and 4 for Penn State from the 28....."
Best you could hope for was that on occasion, someone would break in and give an updated correct score
Back in the '60's it was Micky Rubin(?). He would call the pass incomplete for a touchdown. This was before regularly televised away games and he was your only choice.
