Highs and Lows: Nittany Lions start strong, challenged at season midpoint

Player Highs:
Clifford
Bisker
Brooks
Stout
AK

Player Lows:
Cain
Brandon Smith
All OL

Situational Highs
Brisker picks vs Wiscy
Going up 17-3 on Iowa
Late defensive holds vs Wiscy and Auburn
White Out environment

Situational Lows
Running Game
Lack of even looking prepared from some back ups in the Ball State and Villanove Game that led to....
.....Total failur of TR in the Iowa Game
Lack of coaching adjustments in the Iowa Game

I would imagine CJF had a preliminary schedule of what he wanted the squad to do during this time - I remember Joe usually gave them the first few days off, some Practice, then the Sat off, followed by normal game week prep.

I would imagine some of that preliminary scheduling has changed given the Iowa result and issues at hand.
Franklin does the same thing but it has to be followed. Remember the story that Sickles went to Cali and didn't make it back in time and thus had to sit the 1st half of the 2016 Ohio State Game.

CJF's plan is usually to go through a normal week on the front end and then let them disperse mid-to-late in the week, Wednesday or Thursday for the travel roster guys.

I would imagine they'll still want to get the defensive guys off their feet and some of the major rep guys. But, I would also imagine there is a considerable amount of work to do to get TR and the offense up to speed/on the same page.

I do think it's somewhat important to say that TR's failing did not happen in a vacuum.

He had lots and lots of company, including failures to field punts at the 7 yard line instead of letting them bounce and get downed at the 1. Dropped passes. False starts. Coaching adjustments in the moment.

Iowa is good, not great. That was an uphill climb, but not impossible to get out of with a win even without Clifford once they'd built a 14-point lead.

I agree 100% that a lot of things happened and have been very vocal on the lack of adjustments made by the coaching staff. I guess a lot of my disappointment came from previous "coach speak" talking about how good he has looked because he didn't show one ounce of that look on Saturday.

To also be fair, we could have caught the punts at the 20 and with not being able to snap the ball we still would have been inside the 5:)

Touche.

I consider myself a realist for most of this stuff, but there are times when I find myself creating outs that really shouldn't be there because they're not there for themselves.

That's why I wrote this yesterday.

They have an uphill climb. No denying it. But they can also win without Sean Clifford if their approach is sound. They just need to quickly adjust to that reality, if that's what it is.

I will say...

That was nothing I had ever heard about TR. I repeatedly (maybe too nicely) pounded home the notion throughout the offseason that he's good at a lot of things but not excellent at anything, which is a nice way of saying that Penn State was going to be in huge trouble if Sean Clifford wasn't both good and healthy this season.

Well, he was good, better than most probably anticipated, but now they're going to have to win without him for a little bit. (I'm assuming).

I have said for a few days now that because a back-up doesn't get the reps that a coach should have 10-12 plays that the back up is comfortable with and just runs those plays to try and eliminate thinking, etc...do you know if PSU did or does that or do they have a full playbook when a back up comes in mid game.

I think @Thomas Frank Carr on the postgame addressed that - as did what Penn State was actually saying after the game - that they plowed ahead through the rest of the first half doing what they had been doing (or trying to do it) before changing gears in the second half when it became apparent that plan wasn't going to get it done.

That's about right. They tried for the first two drives to play things straight and then came out after halftime with their adjustments. They also were probably waiting to get the news on Clifford until then. We are looking back at this with hindsight. There was probably some doubt as to what was going to happen until they went into the locker room.

Good point.
