How Matt Ramos Pinned Spencer Lee

In the middle of a wrestling competition a lunger for a cardio-challanged athlete will give the athlete a brief burst, but they will relatively quickly return to energy depletion.
I was emphasizing, not questioning. Trust me when I say I fully understand oxygen deprivation.

Yeah, they dinged Ramos for one stall warning, which was nonsense. I forget which period that was in, but it was a "3x NCAA champ benefit call" look. I personally don't think either wrestler stalled enough to be warned, but Lee almost did in the 2nd at one point.
No - Spencer got dinged about 30 seconds in. Ramos had him in a clinch and Spencer walked straight back out of bounds

They keep saying how PSU fans are rooting against Iowa. No $hit Sherlock.
To be fair, I'm sure he meant that Iowa fans never cheer against a Penn State wrestler or throw beer cans at them ... so he was a little butt hurt and confused that another fan base could treat one of his beloved Hawks like that. At least later on he realized no teams fans like Iowa and the entire stadium was cheering for Ramos.

"and Penn State fans all around us are loving it"
Yeah we were, along with the rest of the arena. The roar from the crowd was crazy loud.
Yeah, even watching from home, I could tell it was way more than just the PSU fans erupting. Reminded me of the crowd volume in response to Moisey sticking Gilman and Cenzo tossing IMar for the fall.

Everyone but the fans of Goliath loves the underdog. Such upsets are a huge reason this tournament is so popular. 330 gladiators enter the arena, and there are bound to be some pretty cool slayings.

Hawkeye radio call of match about 6 minutes in

Thanks for sharing. That was a terrible radio call. It was a HUGE moment in wrestling history, and they made it sound like nothing. I realize they were sad, but I was trying to imagine Byers calling it if (g*d forbid) was Carter. I think he would have been "sad" as the Penn State announcer, but he would have stepped up to the magnitude of the moment.

I have a question, and I apologize 100 times over if it's already been asked and answered. When Ramos hit the move, I thought it was a Mark Hall cement mixer (isn't it also called a gator roll?). But mostly I'm seeing it being called a whip over off the head pinch. The Iowa radio guys called it a cement mixer. Same? Different? Who cares?

I think that’s just their style — straightforward without hooplah.

Besides, their audience was going to be crushed emotionally. No need for them specifically to pour salt in the wound — every other non-Hawkeye outlet in the country would have that covered.

Tying those two points together, it would have been cruel and unusual to make a boisterous exception to their style only for the biggest Hawk defeat of all time. I wouldn’t see a way to justify that kind of exception.

I don't think the announcer knew what to say right away so he went with the mixer.

After Lewis hit the cradle on Cenzo, the rest of Byers' call was like PBP of a funeral.

But unlike those guys, he kept calling the match. They flat-out stopped, and it wasn't a dramatic pause.

Great analysis
Seth is a sharp guy, does a really nice job communicating wrestling ideas. Not an accident that his club generates really good kids. Kasak will be the first to matriculate to Penn State, don’t think he’ll be the last.

honestly not sure what you're talking about? they talked through the entire time he was on his back. the position hadn't changed at all and the match ended. I was expecting silence when i clicked based on the way you guys were talking about it.

obviously Byer's kept calling PBP. Cenzo got off his back and wrestled a full 3 minutes after that.

One of the most ironic things about the move is that it's a McKee family special. And that's who UM picked over Ramos. Very slick and something I've seen more guys try off their head pinches in the last several years.

The first I ever saw do something similar was actually Cael in a practice video.

Just think, 40 years from now Ramos will be able to tell his grandkids he was the second wrestler to pin the Iowa fans self designated GOAT Spencer Lee. (Sarcasm for the fan representative of the most popular program on this message board)

It was a radio call. Radio professionals will tell you 2-3 sec of dead air time is an eternity.

so nit-picky. you said they stopped calling it and that's not true. They called the entire match, even while spencer was on his back with no change in position for 20 seconds. After announcing the fall, there was 3 seconds of them not talking, but not silence. The crowd noise was huge.

You're wound awfully tight today. Might want to take a breath.

The other interesting thing here is I think Pat McKee exposed this weakness at big tens. He was able to whip lee across his own back twice with that crucifix style underhook. Lee muscled through both times, but this time his arm was caught on the far side instead of on a high crotch and he couldn't muscle through from his back.

Those dude were writing the blue print all year long, it just took someone to commit to it and have just a pinch of luck...
Ramos is a bad draw for anyone, sort of like Gomez or Andonian..
Dudes are fun to watch unless it's against your team..
