I think Iowa may well lose to Wisconsin

I wasn't suggesting they can.

Iowa has the nation's #2 scoring defense. And isn't that what really counts?

And as far as our bottom of the barrel offense goes we scored enough to beat the #3 scoring defense team.
Without their starting QB for a half. I don’t see any adjustments Iowa could have made other than to take chances. That would open up the secondary for big plays. Injuries are a huge part of every game and every season. Yesterday was PSUs turn. As a coach I always hope I win with the other team at full strength. I definitely wouldn’t pound my chest when injuries happen to my opponent. Clifford had an open pocket most plays and got an unfortunate break on one hit.

They just updated stats - Wisconsin is only allowing 217.8 YPG. Wisconsin already had the nation's best Rushing Defense going into Illinois game @45.2 Rushing YPG Allowed, and that number just dropped to 41.4 Rushing YPG Allowed.

Wisconsin's Defense is real. And they'll be playing in Madison.
The game may end 3-0 because Wisky's offense is miserable and Mertz is horrible. I guess or assume he played better yesterday but that was Illinois. Point is that Wisky will struggle to move the ball against Iowa.

You Iowa guys still here? You're harder to get rid of than stink bugs. You won. Move on. It comes off as insecure that you're still here selling it. Act like you've been here before. Or if you're under 45, act like your Dad or Grandfather has been here before (I suppose 1985 counts as being there before, once). If Clifford doesn't come back, we have no chance of getting back to the title game. In that case, best of luck to you. I hope you make it to the playoff. It will be cool seeing you slack jawed in those idiotic striped overhauls as Georgia drops 70 on you and that sub-par offense can't get a first down.

If your still on an opposing team’s message board two days after a win, you might want to re-examine your life. Don’t you have to start thinking about Purdue? We have to start focusing on our opponent this week…BYE and that’s tougher than your opponent.

Wisconsin's Defense was #3 in the nation in Total Defense going into yesterday's game allowing only 249 yards a game. They shutout Illinois 24-0 and only allowed Illinois 93 offensive yards. Iowa's offense is so pitifully bad - they don't have a chance against Wisconsin's defense. And it's @Wisco
Iowa will be challenged by both Wiscy & Nebraska. Their offense is simply not good, and on defense, I agree they’re elite in forcing turnovers, but they’re not dominant as the media would have you believe. Even with 2 picks, PSU already had 17 points & 209 yards of offense with over 12 mins to go in 2nd quarter.

Man, for you people that travel around the different boards like I do, take a run over to the Iowa Rivals site. That win (with an asterisk) created a MONSTER. They're convinced that their Hawks are a gift to CF and already talking about how they're going to take down Georgia in the NC game

Oh, and BTW, they're also claiming that when Clifford left the game, the momentum was already in Iowa's favor.

Nah, I take solace in the fact that you can't even field a competitive wrestling team without PA wrestlers. That's gotta make you throw up in your mouth a bit. You're into that "meat grinder" Big West schedule. Go troll Purdue. Or visit the kids hospital and explain that the chant wasn't "**** Penn State", but "Let' go Nate".

Guaranteed they will lose to someone they are supposed to beat. Also, one or two injuries will be devastating, they dont have quality depth.
Not true. Iowa plays a lot of kids. Having said that, all of Iowa’s remaining games will be contested. As you saw, the offense is awful. D is pretty good. Special teams are excellent. You can’t rely on turnovers every week.

But we all agree.. this is not a great scenario for Penn State..need IOWA to keep winning and play… us? In the Big 10 Title game…a loss against an unbeaten team ranked in top 2-3 is as “ good” a loss as there is for Penn State…

There’s hopeful and there’s delusional, Iowa fans obviously fall into the second category.

Possible but unlikely. Iowa will stuff the run and pressure Mertz because he he can't handle it. If Iowa intercepted Clifford they are likely to intercept Mertz.

Why does Mertz have to throw the ball? You have the 117th ranked offense nationally (i.e., bottom decile!) averaging only 317 YPG going up against the nation's 2nd best defense (only giving up 219 YPG). Wisconsin is playing the game @home as well. Wisconsin doesn't need to have Mertz throw the ball to win the field position battle in this game. Why on earth would Wisconsin have Mertz throwing the ball all over the place if Iowa is unable to move the ball, let alone score???
You may be right in theory but every week Chryst keeps letting him throw the ball. Every week Badger fans ask the same question as you, "Why on earth would Wisconsin have Mertz throwing the ball all over the place"?

Iowa beat them last year. Mertz will have to hang onto the ball for Wisky to have a chance. Wisky is kind of battle tested having played PSU, ND and UM. All with better offenses than Iowa.

That argument is invalid unless making excuses for Iowa’s poor offensive production.

What Iowa does the rest of the way is irrelevant given the games remaining on our schedule. They could lose out and we’d still make the playoff if we finish 13-1.

Actualy almost three full quarters. But Taulia Tagavailoa was looking pretty good against Iowa in the first quarter too. And then he didn’t.
Clifford led PSU to scores on 3 of 4 drives even after spotting Iowa 3 with a bad pick to start out. Taulia had one nice drive early, then seemed to fall apart. Very little similarity at all. Here's what happened on Maryland's possessions in the first half.
1 - Punt
2 - Interception
3 - Touchdown
4 - Interception
5- Interception
6 - Punt
7 - Interception

Here's what happened on Penn State's drives before Clifford left:

1 - Interception (from own end zone, was tripped and about to be down for a safety)
2 - Touchdown
3 - Interception (in Iowa end zone trying for a covered Jahan Dotson)
4 - Touchdown
5 - Field Goal

Iowa had really done nothing to show it could stop Clifford at that point. He wasn't rattled like Taulia even after the mistakes, in part because he knew what kind of defense he had behind him.

Hahahah, who's "insecure"? Iowa is living rent free in your heads. And oh, by the way. There is one thing to blame for your Iowa loss. It's called the transfer portal. Your second best quarterback transferred to Kentucky. You should have had a backup. In that sense, the game has become a game changer. Meaning, every coach and team in America now realizes that, hey!, we need a backup. Look what happened to Penn State. Good night.

No need to say good night. Just leave.

This is true. PSU does not need Iowa to be a “quality loss”. If you get to the playoff, you’ll have beaten at least 3 teams currently ranked in the top 10.

The "aw shucks" d-bag coach of Iowa is 2 and 4 against Coach James Franklin!

Iowa’s defense is NOWHERE near as good as our ‘86 D. Not in the same universe.
And I actually do like Goodson, but he’s no DJ Dozier.
Don't even talk about such a comparison unless this Iowa team somehow gets in and wins the CFP. That '86 team may well have been the best of Joe's teams, which is saying a lot.

Iowa had really done nothing to show it could stop Clifford at that point.

Key words: 'at that point'. (And BTW pressuring him to throw interceptions are stopping him.)

Petras started out 2 of 11 for 22 yds. Finished 15 of 20 for 175.

Adjustments are made; momentum changes.

And head coaches expose their QB's by calling plays that leave their backfield empty against blitzing linebackers.

...he knew what kind of defense he had behind him.

And I know what defense he had in front of him.

actually it is the insecurity of Iowa fans, and it is manifesting on the PSU board. Don’t you have your own message board?

C'mon dude, he is just doing what a lot of PSU fans do, going to the boards of the prior week's opponent looking for a little gratification. WE have entire threads devoted to opposing fanbase meltdowns. Won't you be going to the IA board after they get beat for the first time this year? If not you, I am certain that many will.

Exactly, Wisconsin is playing @home and they have an elite defense (#2 in the nation in Total Defense giving up only 219 YPG - UGa is #1 giving up only 201 YPG) - Iowa's Offense would need to put points on the board and pressure Wisconsin's Offense into taking some chances as Michigan's Offense did throughout their game with Wisconsin. Problem for Iowa is that their Offense horrible - Michigan's Offense averages 441 YPG, 5th in b1g; Iowa averages 318 YPG, dead last in b1g (and not just dead last in b1g - 117th out of 130 FBS Teams Nationally!!!). If Iowa is unable to score or move the ball on Wisconsin, the stats suggest the will likely lose to Wisconsin as Iowa's defense may limit Wisconsin's run-based offense, but they are not going to completely shut it down. If they lose the Field Position battle to Wisconsin.... they will likely lose this game as Wisconsin is not likely to put the ball in the air on downfield passes if Iowa can't establish a lead.

I don't know the last time I visited an opponents board, but yeah, I might head to the IA board when they get exposed. You can just see it coming and it will build week-by-week making the collapse even more satisfying
