Give the top 2 teams a bye, have 4 teams play for the remaining 2 spots in the semis. That way most teams are only playing 1 or 2 additional games. It would be the exceptional team that would win 3 to take the championship.

If you're not in the top 6 you can't really argue you're national championship worthy.

8, just take the top 8 now and see what you get with the understanding this won't be the final 8 in a few weeks as some will lose in the next 4-5 weeks. It's a nice lineup though.

UGA vs. TCU
Bama vs PSU
ND vs. OSU
Clem vs OU

I've always thought 6 was the right number. With the play ins to be on campus. That said, it becomes a reward to not be number 1 or 2.

Six is fine and probably solves most legit arguments about a team being left out. But once they're ready to expand, it makes sense to just go to 8. Gives more flexibility to include 1 team from each P5 conference and a team from G5.

First, those 4 would be an amazing slate of games.
Second, it basically looks like it could be the original 4 alliance bowls a play-in and a championship game, which is what most have been gunning for since pre-BCS.

After faffing around this long, do we really think the powers that be will do exactly what they’ve been avoiding all along? Nice hope but I don’t see that anytime soon. Was progress that they even gave the #3 team a chance for the MNC through a 4-team playoff.

Heck, they could even go back to the Rose Bowl being B1G v PAC, etc, etc. in most scenarios. Problem at this point is so many games for college football players, which was a “problem” then, which they resolved by creating conference chamionships across the grid and then creating a half playoff. It’s nuts.

I vote 8 with the first round at the highest ranked team.

Bowls not in the championship will suffer though as their four best selections - which is why it won't likely happen.

Has to be 8.. Five conference champions and 3 at large teams, with no more than 2 teams from any conference.

I like 8 with a few twists.
1) All 5 P5 conference champs get an auto bid assuming the have a minimum number of wins (Say 10). That number is after the CCG game (which all have). If a team can't go 10-3 they don't have a gripe. If a p5 champion doesn't meet the quota. The team with the highest playoff ranking from the conference qualifies. If no team in a p5 conference has 10 wins they lose the slot for that year.

I picked 10 wins as a team would have to go 9-3 regular season to get in (plus winning the conference). This would encourage tough OOO games (atleast 1 per year) as no team who loses 2 games in conference would expect to win their division)

2) The highest Non P5 champion qualifies assuming they have 10 wins. If no non P5 Conference champ has 10 wins - the highest ranking non p5 team with 10 wins goes.

This would leave 2 wild cards per year.

I would alter the playoff Committee to consider SOS more. factor in conference location - as those are out of teams control - but if a team plays a tough road OOC game - weight that more than a Home OOC game or Tough Neutral OOC game. This will encourage more OOC home/homes (yes you get hurt 1 year - but you benefit the next). This might even encourage 2 good/great OOC games yearly.

Play the 1st round at the higher ranked team.
The Conference Champs are 1-5 seeds
You could reseed after the 1st round to eliminate rematches from the regular season or to reward teh better teams (ie. if UCF somehow upset Bama in my example - they would have to play the next toughest team/etc.).

You could use the bowls for the final 4 (like today)

Take this year.
The 8 teams would be (if the season ended today)
SEC - Bama
BIG - OSU
Big12 - Oklahoma
PAC12 - Washington
ACC - Clemson
Non P5 - UCF
Atlarge - PSU/UGA would be competing. (I am assuming ND loses to Stanford or somewhere else)

The loss to OSU would still hurt.
Seedings would be (based on today)
1- Bama
2 - Clemson
3 - Oklahoma
4- OSU
5 - Washington
6 - UGA
7 - PSU
8 - UCF

you could argue us ahead of UGA - but it doesn't matter.

By losing to OSU - we would have to go to Clemson or Oklahoma instead of hosting UGA or UCF or OSU. That is HUGE.

This keeps the regular season meaningful. The benefit of home games in CFB is probably the biggest edge in sports. It also encourages meaningful OOC games as a loss won't impact you. The system can punish teams for playing tough OOC games. Had OSU loss to us - they would not have any chance unless utter chaos ensues. We still have a decent chance. UW got in last year because they played nobody out of conference.

Crazy idea #32:

1. 4 conferences of 16 teams each ... basketball has seemingly thousands of schools [hyperbole] but only puts 64 in its tournament ... there really aren't more than 64 football teams legitimately capable of winning a national title anyway

2. 2 divisions in each conference, 8 per division

3. teams play 7 games within their division

4. teams play 2 teams from within the "other" division, rotating opponents every 4 years

5. teams play 3 games from outside their conference, 1 from each other conference on a rotating basis

6. Game 13 is for the conference title at a neutral site

7. game 14 for 4 teams is the semi-finals at Bowl sites

8. game 15 for 2 teams is the championship game at Bowl site

No-debate rule: don't win your division, you don't make the playoffs ... go to Bowl games instead

No political ploys from Herbstreit or ESPN ... no "eye tests" ... no voting by committee ... win your division and advance
